A TORY councillor today called on his colleagues to follow his lead and take a pay cut to show solidarity with Edinburgh residents suffering in the recession.
Gordon Buchan, councillor for the Fountainbridge and Craiglockhart ward, volunteered for a 10 per cent salary cut when elected in 2007.

The £1,583 sliced off his annual salary is handed back to the city council and Councillor Buchan – who also w
orks full-time as a regional development director for transport consultants Halcrow – today called on other councillors to consider doing the same as thousands of workers across the Capital are facing redundancy in the next year.

Including salaries and expenses, the city's 58 councillors cost taxpayers about £1.2 million every year. But salaries range from Cllr Buchan's £14,254 a year, to £47,516 for council leader Jenny Dawe.

There was a mixed response to the proposal from councillors today, with some claiming they could not afford the cut, while others saying it should be put to the test of full council.

Cllr Buchan said: "I made a pledge before the election that I would not claim full salary as a councillor, as many people in my ward would be on fixed incomes by either low wages or by fixed pensions.

"In this current economic situation I do think that politicians should lead by example and at least consider what they receive as remuneration.

"Many of our constituents are suffering in these conditions. What I have done may not suit everyone's situation in the council. It would be an individual choice for each councillor to make."

He added: "I have not claimed anything else as councillor except for my bus pass which I do use to get to and from the City Chambers and wherever possible to get to meetings in my ward. My combined expenses and salary figures have been the lowest of any councillor in the city."

Many councillors, including those with major portfolios such as environment leader Robert Aldridge, have full-time or part-time jobs in addition to their council duties. Among the ranks of councillors are taxi drivers, publicans, housing officers, scientists and parliamentary officers.

SNP councillor Norman Work, vice-convener of the city's housing committee, said: "It is a lot easier for people with full-time jobs to make these sorts of statements.

"I work full-time as a councillor and I think I offer pretty good value. There are a lot of days where I leave the house at 7am and don't get back until 10pm with all the meetings and commitments."

Earlier this week the News revealed how the amount of expenses claimed by city councillors has gone down.

The annual table revealed local politicians claimed £49,958 for travel, food and other expenses in 2008-9 – nearly half the total of three years ago.

The city's Labour leader, Andrew Burns, said:

"Local councillor's circumstances do vary widely, with many having an additional source of regular employment and income, whilst others do not."

I'm sure as a director of Halcrow he is being paid comfortably into 6 figures, so his oh-so-generous £1500 sop is not really much cop.

Think he will be quite alone as most of the council and workers look for pay increases regardless, guaranteed pensions etc etc for very little work done!!

Good on Buchan and let's hope more follow.

I've just had a labour ad throw the door and its laughable at what they say they do for us!

Give the man his dues, he is due some credit

But given that the Evening News reported the Councils £92m black hole (due to the bail out of the banks) the other week.

The Evening News reported that a pay freeze for Council staff was one option....so credit is due (yes he's got a job elsewhere)....but lead by example.

To be honest, this is really Gordon Buchan advertising Gordon Buchan.

Not a bad advert, but an advert none the less.

now she can be seen swanning it up in her inverleith ward,as muirhouse voters had just about enough of her,and were ready to put their collective boots to her rear end

5 - why is that relevant? The party in power doesn't control councillors' expenses.

6 - yes, it's probably worth stating the obvious.

Headline might have been:

"Well-paid consultant accepts tiny reduction in income to win a few plaudits from idiots."

Pointless really, because all the cooncil will do with his money is what they do with ours, p*** it up against a wall.

Oh shocking comments. To be fair the Evening News hasn't told the whole story.

Councillor Buchan was not a director of Halcrow when he became a Councillor. His personal circumstances have changed a great deal since then.

Councillor Buchan works hard for the people in his Ward, probably more than some other Councillors that immediately spring to mind.

This is not an advert for Gordon Buchan. This is a factual piece probably arising out of the fact that the results list for Councillors expenses did not take into account the fact that 10% of his pay is paid back.

Good for Councillor Buchan and many more should do the same.

#10 You're having a laugh! The man put leaflets about the state of pavements for years through the letterboxes in the ward. And that's all he still does. Self publicist!

Its no wonder we get a shower of useless numpties when we only pay a salary of £15k.

Buchan took over from Kingsley Thomas - a labour apparatchik who helped mess up the Fountainbridge / Grove Street / Morrison Street and Dalry areas with a slavish deference to the party whip and developers.

He is still working AFAIK in the public sector so as well as getting the big pay-off for 'standing down' from the council he'll have a good pension to look forward to.

Buchan's gesture is a welcome sign that recent events may be starting to cause serious thought amongst the political class.

Now how about some serious pay and bonus cuts for the nationalised bankers!

Peter - very disappointed/concerned,

Funny to recall that not so long ago local authority councillors were only paid their expenses. Regrettably the increase/introduction of salaries has not resulted in an increase in their performance.

Where can you see the expenses of the previous administration?
How much was paid to all those who stood down - they knew they would be booted out and some already had their 'new jobs' lined up with the very same consultants they had wasted lots of public money on?

Dragonlord,

1#He won't be on the bread line any time soon that's for sure, He will claim it back in expences. However here's a shout to Jenny Dawes lets hear you taking a pay cut. After all you are the one claiming how great the tram line will be so how about some of your wages going to pay for it. Didn't think so!

#1. Duncan.

The principle of what he is doing is good, so let's hear it for him.

Round of applause from me!

#24 Applaud away! The man is a preposterous self publicist.

lets think ....he "volunteered for a 10 per cent salary cut when elected in 2007"

"solidarity with Edinburgh residents suffering in the recession"??????

So in May 2007 the recession was well under way? It hadn't even started? Real motive? Anything to get his name up in lights. He wants to be your MP. Don't be groomed.
