Council tradesmen set to strike

AROUND 170 city council workers are likely to stage a one-day walkout in a row over pay.
Craft workers employed by local authorities across Scotland are set to strike on June 2, with the possibility of further 24-hour stoppages every second Monday after that.

The workers include plumbers, gas fitters, electricians and lift engineers. The Unite union said the workers are "angry" over their long hours, when compared to other council employees. They have also rejected a 2.45 per cent pay offer.

As well as Edinburgh, workers from Glasgow, Dundee, Fife and North and South Lanarkshire are likely to be involved.

A city council spokesman said: "The council is aware of proposed nationwide strike action over pay for craft workers.

"Contingency arrangements will be put in place to minimise the impact on council services."

Thanks to the "incestuous" relationship with the former New Labour Council these Trade Unions enjoy a life of riley compared with those engaged with the private sector. No doubt given in return for the crucial Trade Union financial support for New Labour. There is nothing to stop these so called workers moving to the Private Sector where financial rewards are much higher - but it is extremely unlikely they will do so unless forced to do so by the new Council as part of a re-tendering exercise involving the private sector, as to work hard would be a totally alien experience for most of them.

Its quite funny "Marian"but one of the reasons behind the dispute is for parity with the private sector where tradesmen earn far more and get more holidays or have'nt you ever tried to get a private sector plumber or builder in to do a job then ?......Still the "reds under the bed" angle is a funny argument I suppose.

Are these the same tradesmen that were caught fiddling their overtime claims a while back?

They must be finding it hard to fit in their homers now that someone is paying attention.

Why don't the council fit their vans with gps to keep track of where they are?

These guys would be well advised to keep their heads down and stop whining.

These guys are a drain on the Council. It's far cheaper and less hassle just to get a private contractor to do what they do.
