DRIVERS are spending £6 million a year to park their cars in Edinburgh, it was reported today.
Motoring organisations have hit out at the high car parking fees across the UK, with the AA branding the figures "disgusting".

Hugh Bladen, a founder member of the Association of British Drivers, even said the high charges for parking were affecting the economy.

He said: "The money taken away from motorists for parking in this country is absolutely extraordinary. The more money taken out of the pocket for something as inconsequential as parking, the less is being spent on things which will generate the economy."

The figures showed that Edinburgh's annual revenue from on-street parking meters and car parks is the fifth highest in the UK.

City drivers pay more than three times as much as those in Liverpool or Manchester each year.

The survey found that Westminster City Council had the highest revenue from car parking, with an annual income of £33.3m.

Like I say. It's about time for a revolt.

1. Halve fuel duty
2. Re-introduce a flat rate for road tax (£100 per year would be reasonable)
3. Scrap speed cameras
4. Put parking enforcement back into the hands of the police
5. Return Edinburgh to what it was in 1985 regarding parking restrictions and one-way systems.

I wouldn't mind so much if those with their hands on the city purse spent it on anything worthwhile but this shower of SNP/Liberals are busy spending it... Shutting schools and putting up signs in parks telling Polish people not to drink in public!

Scrap the trams for starters.
Scrap the plans to re-build a perfectly good shopping centre.

However, nationally, just stop wasting money on stupid schemes and pouring good money after bad. It worked before, it'll work again.

If you start giving people responsibility you would be surprised how well they would respond. Far better in fact than nannying them all the time and p1ssing them off.

Why can't out of town car drivers use the park and rides? Why can't locals use the excellent bus service? Before you say you have a lot of shopping - ask yourself this question - how many times have you had that much shopping you couldn't manage it on the bus? Not very often I suspect. Lets not forget many shops offer free/cheap home delivery. So why do you need to bring your car into the city? If you did use the bus instead of the car, you would be helping folk like me with my breathing problems!!
