PARENTS have welcomed the decision by Lothian Buses to stick to a route that is used by dozens of children travelling to and from school.
Many parents had complained about the decision to re-route the 45 bus so that it no longer went along Lauriston Place.

The 45 service is used by pupils travelling from the south-west of the city to George Heriot's School.

The bus company had initially planned to change the route to Princes Street to improve passenger numbers, as it was little used outside school hours, but it has now postponed any move due to the tram works in the city centre.

Councillor Jason Rust, who represents Colinton and Fairmilehead, said: "At a time when the council are actively promoting safe routes to schools it was of real concern that pupils were going to face the prospect of having to cross at the busy Tollcross junction or wait around for further services at Home Street.

"Parents are delighted that the route change has been put on hold and I will be monitoring any future review of this route."

A correct decision - there are already far too many buses on Princes Street - there should be a lot more taking alternative routes round the city - not everyone wants to go to the city centre Lothian Buses!

Why Lothian Buses bows down to the school briggade i do not know. Its a business and these buses will only be used at school times and will run empty all day. If you can't get to the school find one you can get to.

These parents chose to send their kids to a fee-paying school in the centre of Edinburgh, so let them drive them there or send them there by taxi if they are that worried about their safety.

3) That's champion! Encourage MORE gas guzzlers, BMWs Merc's etc on the (private) school run!

#3 Finbarr, you ever tried to get along Lauriston Place when that school is going on, all those Chelsea Tractors, 4x4's and others, they don't even know what the zig zag lines mean at the crossing, there a law into themselves, if they want there children dropeed of by bus BAN therm from dropping there precious little kids off and make them use the bus, am afraid to say this councilor bowed to the people who have money and clout.

#3:

Have you not thought that the kids themselves might actually want to make their own way to and from school rather than being nannied by their parents all the time? George Heriots is after all a secondary school as well as a primary school.

Let's not forget that this service has only been temporarily reprieved due to the tram works. What happens after they have finished?

It's about time that transport matters in this city started being managed by people who actually understand transport rather than those who just want to make life difficult for everyone.

Hopefully this will cut the school run by parents down and give us more room on the roads.

Should have school buses like in the US, where nobody is allowed to park at schools. That would put an end to all the silly 4x4 cows who think they can park where they want.

Some of those "silly 4x4 cows" are actually not bad looking from what I have seen...

#9 - Alternative (High-Octane) Fuel Head - They'll be the Asian/East European au-pairs on the school run.

The actual 4X4 owners usually look more like Shergar.

The bus is also for pupils who attend St Thomas of Aquinas High School also the clinics at the Lauriston Place buildings i.e. the ENT etc.

what the hell difference does it make whether the school is private or not. And, why shouldn't buses be provided for school children. all I read on here is anti - children comments. What is the problem with children or people having them.

#11 - JLF- "what the hell difference does it make whether the school is private or not."

Even the gentlest dig at a private school always manages to elicit a defensive response from some marble-mouthed ex-public schoolboy/girl!

Away and feed yer pony!

#11 the problem is the majority of people with children are selfish. They have a brood, then expect taxpayer handouts for them (soon to be increased), a seat on the bus, subsidised childcare, the time off to suit themselves during school holidays (but always take the kids out of school during term time to save money)not to mention maternity and paternity leave. I don't hate kids at all, just the completely self-absorbed attatude most parents have in Edinburgh - it's all me, me me. And please note - buggies are not banned on buses, just your massive 4x4 tractor-sized prams which don't fold down. Happy New year all :)

13 - PaulB - You are 100% right!

From the moment they insist on showing everyone photos of their ugly newborn bairn, parents seem to think that the rest of the world dotes on their offspring as much as they go.

When will they get it into their thick heads that naebody else really cares about their bains?
15

JLF,

Finbarr- I attended St Thomas of Aquinas, whihc please note is not an independent school.

Also, I am a parent but have never had subsidised child care, demanded a place on any bus as my children walked the half mile to school and have always taken holidays during non- term dates. Or received child tax credirs, working tax credits or any other help from the Government. and yes I do think child benefit should be means tested. But I sippose that makes me a bloody tory!

I did take maternity leave, my husband didn't get paternity leave.

I would have found it difficult to carry on working during the birth and am sure it would have inconvenienced quite a few colleagues with me panting away and asking for pain relief.

Just like the mention of private schools elicits a response from the "If I can't have it why should you " brigade.

It is a persons choice how they spend their money in a democracy - isn't it ?

#21 - jdships - I knew that you'd show up sooner or later.

Shouldn't you be away shooting at defenceless wee animals with your Hooray Henry mates?
