CHRISTMAS has come early for Edinburgh's biggest shops, with some of the city's top retailers reporting trade levels well up on this time last year.
John Lewis said business picked up dramatically last week, despite the UK's recent financial woes and the start of construction on Edinburgh's tram network.

Business groups believe that the "Open for Business" campaign to promote the city during the tram work has helped to boost Christmas trade.

Sales at John Lewis last week were 2.3 per cent ahead of the same week last year, and fully 10 per cent up on the previous week this year.

Department store rival Harvey Nichols said that, despite a "flat" October, it has had an extremely strong November, with footfall "considerably above" last year.

And the organisers of the Winter Wonderland, which includes the popular German Market, say more than 15,000 people attended the site over the first weekend - thought to be the busiest debut weekend yet.

Trams company TIE has agreed to pay £100,000-a-year to market the city as "open for business", targeting other Scottish cities in the run-up to Christmas.

Isabella Miller, general manager of John Lewis Edinburgh, said the retailers were working closely with TIE to help minimise disruption.

She added that the lights switch on and the recent cold snap had helped to "put Christmas in shoppers' minds".

Expensive technology like iPods, laptops, plasma televisions and "sat nav" devices are selling particularly well.

Gordon Drummond, general manager of Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh, said its performance had been helped by demand for handbags, cosmetics and accessories. He added: "From the middle of November we've really started to see a difference."

Nickie Gott, managing director of Winter Festivals organisers She's Gott It, said it had been an "incredibly busy weekend".

She said: "Winter Wonderland had its busiest first day ever on Friday, and one of the traders said he'd had his busiest weekend ever in 11 years of trading."

Graham Bell, a spokesman for Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said: "It is great that the large players like John Lewis and Harvey Nichols are doing well in Edinburgh and we would hope that would filter down to smaller firms as well.

"It was in everyone's mind that tram work could affect trade at such an important time and that is why a lot of time and effort went into preparing for that."

Willie Gallagher, executive chairman of TIE, said he was "delighted" that the face-to-face dialogue with retail, transport and tourism groups was paying off.

And Councillor Tom Buchanan, the city's economic development leader, said: "Edinburgh, with its array of festive activities and variety of retail offerings, continues to attract record numbers."

Thousands fear spectre of festive spending debt

THOUSANDS of people in Edinburgh are dreading the Christmas season, fearing they will run up huge debts, according to a new report.

Life assistance firm CPP Group said almost two-thirds of people in the city were not looking forward to Christmas, with many citing financial worries as the main reason.

A poll of 3000 people found that 62 per cent dreaded Christmas, while 82 per cent found shopping for gifts a stressful experience. It also found one in ten people had told friends and family they would get their gifts a bit late, while six per cent had been so short of money in the past they were forced to turn up empty-handed on Christmas Day.

The news comes as APACS, the UK payment association, estimated Christmas spending across the UK will top more than £53 billion - a rise of 4.2 per cent on last year. Nick Jones of CPP warned that people should also be aware of identity and card fraudsters over the festive season.

He said: "Debit, credit and online spending are all estimated to increase this Christmas and people should make sure they safeguard their personal information during the festive season.

"Filling stockings is a priority - but do it safely."

The Citys top retailers reporting that trade is up on last year, the only thing that is up are the prices.

Prices on the up? Surely not! I would never think that prices would tend to increase on an annual basis.

I presume you will have posted comments on most of the other stories moaning as usual?

Shop in Princes Street at Christmas time, can't remember the last time I done that.

Livingston is the place to shop, shops are ten times better and no cracked pavements, puddles or tourists!!!!!!

And all undercover!!!

Willie .....Dream On!!!

Once the New Centre at livingston opens next year......Princes Street will be even more of a white elephant when it comes to shopping.

And when the TRAMS finally start running, you'll find less people will come into Edinburgh by Bus and Car......who wants to spend another hour or so waiting/travelling for/on a Bus.

And things will get worse once the tram works start on York Place/Picardy Place.....bring yir sleeping bag....Of course is Willie not one of these chaps on a bonus !!!

Shoppings fantastic isnt it ?
i just love to hear about the shops and what they have in them to buy and how much it all costs. It's marvellous that they send out a reporter to go round the shops to find out how they are doing, if they are keeping well and what new shiny things they have for us to purchase - all at reasonable prices.

Things are great, stuff is great and lets face it we all need stuff. You can never have enough stuff , unless you cant get in your front door for it , in which case you probably have too much and should take it to cash convertors.

This is great. Keep up the good work EEN.

I'm up for it. Maybe 500 pounds each and one of us could go to LIvingston and one to oh i dunno edinburgh.. and we both have to buy as much stuff as we can and then say how happy we are with our stuff and what we are going to do with the stuff etc. Then we could compare prices and share our disbelief in the fact that the same things cost EXACTLY the same in the two different places because they are all run from an office building just off the m25.

It would make for a great report.

These shops sound lovely!

It must be nice to have the freedom to go and shop without being stalked, harassed, and terrorized. I do not.

It was bad enough that the Horrendicoots and associates destroyed my car so badly I had a wrecker two it away. (It was verified by a mechanic that someone purposely did this to my car. The most logical guess would be the idiots who stalk me daily.) Horrendicoot and his associates have progressed to horrible, ugly games on the city bus.

Last time I tried to go on the bus and shop, Horrendicoot was standing up by the driver when we got on the bus. It was a strange driver that we had never seen before. When we went to get off the bus, as my daughter was exiting the bus THE DRIVER CLOSED THE DOORS ON MY DAUGHTER, HITTING HER ARMS AND SHOULDERS WITH THOSE DOUBLE DOORS. When the doors opened and my daughter stepped out of the bus, and I stepped out to see if she were okay - the driver shut the door behind us and drove away, without even asking if my daughter was okay.

When I called the police they said they could not do anything because "it is a city matter, the city owns the buses".--------------------------------
REAL NICE.

SO, ONE MORE THING HORRENDICOOT HAS GOTTEN AWAY WITH -
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ TALKS
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ PAYS FOR UGLY GAMES

So, picture this. My daughter is trying to step off the bus in front of me.......WERE THEY MEANING TO CLOSE THE DOOR ********AFTER MY DAUGHTER AND BEFORE ME,
WHICH WOULD PUT MY DAUGHTER OUTSIDE OF THE BUS - LEAVING ME INSIDE THE BUS, UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR MYSELF

WHAT ARE THESE CREEPS TRYING TO PULL ON ME?

paul the binman,

Wonder where all these extra shoppers are parking then ?All year round the same traders are telling us they are loosing money because of the parking problems in the city but come Christmas the problems vanish.Maybe everybody starts to use public transport ,Aye right ........:)

HAPPY SHOPPING!

THE REST OF YOU NEED TO BE THANKFUL......AND ENJOY YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING!!!!!!!!

Scotland, Distant Relatives:

If you want me to tell you where the stuff my great-grandfather (Robert C. Bruce) buried is, the way to accomplish this would not be to allow these individuals to terrorize me and my personal life.

I GUESS IT IS JUST A ....."COINCIDENCE"......THAT TWO OF US SAW HORRENDICOOT FOLLOWING US AROUND FOOD LION AT THE SAME TIME, IN FOOD LION, WE BELIEVE WE RECOGNIZED CERTAIN DISTANT RELATIVES OFF OF A FAMILY WEBSITE. JUST HAPPENED TO BE AROUND THE TIME THERE WERE HIGHLAND GAMES IN THE US.
********HORRENDICOOT WOULDN'T JUST HAPPEN TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH SOME OF MY DISTANT RELATIVES, WOULD HE?

Now today we need to go downtown. The only way we have to get there is the bus. Our nerves are in knots. IS THIS AMUSING??????????????????

**************************************************************************************
DO YOU WANT THAT STUFF THAT IS BURIED UP THERE ON THAT PROPERTY?

THEN GET THOSE CREEPS OFF MY BACK, ONE OF YOU CONTACT MY EMAIL, AND WE CAN TALK.

IF THIS CR#* KEEPS UP I WILL DIE WITH THIS DA#& SECRET AND YOU WILL NEVER RECOVER ANY OF THOSE ITEMS. (The kangaroo is not willing to go up there and dig 100 acre farm with his toothbrush.)

And you all have a really nice time with your Christmas shopping.

Please leave the email.

I tried calling the news. They would not pick up on this story. AGAIN, HORRENDICOOT IS FILTHY RICH AND HIS MONEY SPEAKS LOUDLY, ALLOWING HIM TO PLAY VISCIOUS GAMES ON ME.

HE IS AFTER THE TREASURE BURIED UP IN WEST VIRGINIA, BY MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER, ROBERT C. BRUCE AND TRYING TO PUT ENOUGH PRESSURE ON ME TO MAKE ME CRACK AND TELL HIM WHERE TO FIND IT. HE WANTS TO SCARF AND HOARD THAT STUFF FOR HIS WEALTHY CREEPY PRIVATE COLLECTION. MAYBE SOME PEOPLE THINK HE IS TRYING TO "HELP THEM RECOVER IT". WRONG. HE IS PSYCO AND IN THIS FOR HIMSELF, AND HIMSELF ALONE.

In #18, I mean -tow- instead of where it says -two-. Those creeps destroyed my car so badly I gave up and had the wrecker tow it away. A man said it looked like someone actually had "a list" of things they had done to mess up that car.............THAT CERTAINLY DOES NOT CLASSIFY AS A CHRISTMAS LIST.

I have got to go get ready to go downtown, an errand I must do. And I feel scared inside.
ALL PRAYERS ARE WELCOME.

Is it okay to post an email address on here? I am thinking of setting up a separate email to use to post on here.

By the way, I am real, really a Bruce descendant. I've got copies of immigration records from 1881, when my great-grandfather, Robert C. Bruce immigrated to the US from Scotland, and the documents that trace me back to him. There were some items buried by my great-grandfather, that he brought with him on the boat from Scotland that were never found. Before my father died, he left me with a secret map as to 5 spots where things are buried. I want to bring this out but do not know how to do it - without the treasure-mongers, hoarders and scarfers..........I want things returned where they belong and not falling into the wrong hands.

Gotta go. Hopefully, I will return from this venture safely. Can someone answer that question? Can I post an email address on here?

Thank you for the good wishes.

Thanks, Alex. Why do you think I am trying to get this out in the open as much as possible?

I could have possibly been quiet about the whole thing. BUT IT BECAME ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT MANY, MANY PEOPLE ALREADY KNEW ABOUT "MY LITTLE SECRET".

Something I did not realize for quite a long time.........my father told at least one person, that he had told me. Thanks alot, Dad!

Gotta go.

On My Way 27/11/2007 17:07:22

Ok, guys. I'm calm. I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME.

This little situation may be on the verge of startin' to get a little out of hand, though.

I'll come into this article comments when I return. For now, Antagonist the 3rd, we'll have to use an email. I have a cell phone, and my minutes are low until December 3, when they replenish. So I will set up a separate email when I get home and put it on here. (This way if it gets too crazy I can always delete the whole email account.)

I will be getting on a city bus in Blacksburg, VA, US. And I will not actually leave for about another hour. So it may be 3 - 5 hours before I actually return, and will come back on here, into this comment section.

I don't know for sure what's buried on that property. Apparently, some others believe it is not only real, but D#*N interesting. It think it is time we find out - what is or isn't there. It seems to me to be the best way to get the creeps off of my back.
(And maybe some precious items really can get returned to where they belong.)

It is scary to come up against a creep, or creeps with lots of money, especially when you do not have lots of money - me. I had a police officer come to my home to report Horrendicoot coming up to me outside of my apt bldg one night, back in August. He came speeding up, made a weird remark with a horrible twisted mad look on his face, and then sped away. The remark seemed to insinuate my "Bruce genes".

I specifically asked the officer to document that two of us identifed this person, Horrendicoot (can't use the real name), that I wanted it on the report. The guy was only three to four feet away from me, speaking to me. Later, when I asked for a copy of that report I had to ask the police department three times before they could find the report. When I got it, it said, "suspicious vehicle outside of apt bldg." The name I specifically requested be docum

I am back, safe at home again. Not entirely enjoyable. Would a wealthy, pompous psyco be back on the bus again today? I am afraid so, I ended up getting off before my stop because I wanted off the bus so badly. I accomplished what I went out to do. But someone needs to put this hideous excuse for a person off the streets, along with his foul sidekick and his associates.

Money = getting away with all kinds of foul games.

Anyway, I set up an extra email so if you want you can contact me. Maybe we can arrange for you to call at the beginning of the week. (I am getting older and I am tired of what I've had to put up with. So I am inagaurating myself to queen.)

queen_sandra@comcast.net

Oh, and #31......can we ban my distant Scottish relatives from hanging around me in MY NEIGHBORHOOD while I simply, perhaps, try to grocery shop?! IF THIS CR*P WASN'T GOING ON I WOULD NOT BE IN THE SCOTSMAN TO BEGIN WITH!!!!!!!!
*************To call or email and ask to see someone is one thing. To invade their privacy and follow them somewhere and follow them around staring at them like meat is another story.--------And now, per se it is more the Horrendicoot than anyone, with a couple of sickos with him.

#31 - I am in the Scotland paper because I, too, am Scottish. My great-grandfather was a Bruce. AND THIS SICK CR*P THAT IS GOING ON AROUND ME HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH SCOTLAND BECAUSE IT IS ABOUT SOME THINGS MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER TOOK OUT OF SCOTLAND AND BURIED IN THE US. AND I HAVE GOT IDIOTS HANGING AROUND BECAUSE THEY THINK I KNOW WHERE IT IS. MAYBE I DO.

I AM NOT THE NUTTER, LADDIE. THE NUTTERS ARE THE ONES STALKING ME, ACTING LIKE IDIOTS.
