Smith says Gers will blame themselves should they fall short

MANAGER Walter Smith admits Rangers will only have themselves to blame if Celtic pip them to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title tonight.
The destination of the trophy had been in the Ibrox club's hands for most of the latter part of the campaign.

But a draw at Motherwell on Saturday finally swung the balance of power in Celtic's favour.

Both teams head into the final night of th
e season locked on points at the top of the SPL but Celtic's superior goal difference means a win at Dundee United will almost certainly be enough to allow them to retain their crown regardless of Rangers' own result at Aberdeen.

"Having got this far we'd love to see it through," said Smith.

"It would be a huge disappointment if we didn't win the league. We had an advantage going into the last three games and we lost that. We can only blame ourselves if it doesn't happen.

"I've said to my players disappointment in football is the only thing that's guaranteed. We've got to handle that if it comes. But we're not looking at that stage yet, we have to go into the game in a positive frame of mind. We'll go to Pittodrie looking to win the game."

Celtic are four goals better off – meaning Rangers would have to embark on an unlikely goal-spree at Pittodrie to snatch the championship on goal difference.

When questioned after Monday's 3-0 win over St Mirren, Jean-Claude Darcheville claimed Rangers were capable of scoring up to six goals against Aberdeen – but also admitted the Dons were just as capable of restricting their visitors. However, his comments have angered some members of the Pittodrie camp in the build-up to the crunch match.

Smith defended the Gers striker, saying: "Jean-Claude was asked if we could score six goals in Aberdeen and he said 'yes'.

"He also said we might only score one but that part wasn't used in the papers in the north east. They used the first part just to crank things up.

"Listen, I know how hard it's going to be so we'll just look to win the game and then take it from there."

Celtic will take a 2-0 win and Rangers will be held to a 1-1 draw. RFC had their chance but now it is up to Celtic, it will be a squeak bum night all round.

My hat goes off to RFC in their season achivements.

Walter will have one thing to say to the press and one to his players.

Historically Celtic's fragility on occasions like this is known to all. And I predict, if need be, Rangers are capable of scoring a barrel-load, 6 or 7 if necessary.

Hopefully Sir David Murray will dedicate the win to the peerless Paul Gascoigne who every decent fan of any team must hope will recover speedily from his current problems.

Rangers should blame themselves - they've played boring defensive football all season and that's against weak SPL teams.

Anyway don't think Aberdeen will roll over for Rangers like ST.Mirren did!!

Bemused and above it all,

The last time a team 'rolled over' as is being suggested many seem to forget that celtic took 4 off kilmarnock, missing a penalty in the process, NOT SAVED BUT MISSED! And who was the goalie at that time for killie?
A mr Gordon Marshall, no connection at all, but also no allegation of lying down/rolling over, and therein lies the difference, We dont use conspircies to explain our defeats.

C'mon Aberdeen - do the SPL some justice. Rangers don't deserve anything.

Aberdeen fans - bring something to entertain youself with tonight because the mighty gers will bring Aberdeen down to their boring level.

This may not be the board on which to make this comment, but as an expat Rangers fan I find it sad that the City of Manchester is banning United from parading its trophies through the streets because of the perfomance of Rangers fans last week.I sat in my local pub, watching the game of TV and heard the commentater say that the fans inside the stadium were well behaved.I knew that it was outside the stadium, after the game that they would have to woorry about. It proved to be true....SAD!

Wattie is wrong, every rangers supporter and weegie journolist will blame everyone BUT themselves. They could not beat lower division teams with their boring football, they asked for a postponement and got it, then posponed a game at the request of celtic, due to the death of P O'Donnel when the Utd players were told to get on with it. YES, Wattie you are right, you only have yourselves to blame.Oh and lowering your pitch below the river level that was really smart.

Celtic will be victoridoious tonight, Rangers had their chance and blow it, they have had a season never expected, but lack of quality has cost them, Hutton leaving did not help.

Can QoTS win on Saturday.

Finnharp - have you started on the alcohol already?

Can QoTS win (or in your words be victoridoious)?

In a word - No. Indeed there's more chance of you posting an intelligent point. To expect anything other than a triumph for Glasgow Rangers is utter fantasy.

Look forward to hearing from you tomorrow. Who will be blamed for Celtic's usual last minute collapse on these occasions.

Well Glen, thank you for pointing out the spelling mishap, my keyboard is messed up. But as you know, cup games go anywhere, tomorrow I will be recovering, talk to you later tonight, and sorry no alcohol yet, just Coke.
