Smith rates Celtic as one of Europe's best

Published Date: 16 April 2008
RANGERS manager Walter Smith insists Celtic's plight has been blown out of proportion ahead of tonight's Old Firm derby.
The Hoops' hopes of a third consecutive championship were written off in some quarters after losing to Rangers at Ibrox last month, before succumbing to Motherwell at Parkhead in their next match.

A win for Rangers in the East End of Glasgow would
provide them with a seven-point lead at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with two games in hand and even Smith, pictured below, concedes a realistic challenge from Celtic would then be unlikely.

But the Gers boss is equally aware victory for the Hoops could provide the morale boost they need to mount a late push for the SPL crown.

"Like everything else in Scotland, the situation Celtic find themselves in gets exaggerated," he said.

"We have made a challenge this year and after winning the first two Old Firm games, which were on our ground, the whole thing has been exaggerated.

"I'm not trying to use any psychology. I do genuinely believe they are as good as any of the teams we've faced in Europe.

"In Scotland things can get blown out of proportion because I think reaching the last 16 of the Champions League is a terrific achievement and that's the measure of Celtic as a team.

"We have to remember that we are trying to aspire to what they already had which is league championships and qualification for the Champions League.

"Everybody can think what they like, but that's where we are and Celtic are a very good team."

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has never fully won over a section of the Parkhead support and has found himself under increasing pressure in recent weeks.

But, when asked if he has any sympathy for his opposite number, Smith insisted: "I don't think he needs my sympathy. I don't think he needs anybody's sympathy.

"He maybe needs a bit of understanding. It's a lot quicker nowadays from when I was first here.

"Assessment of teams and of others is a bit quicker although maybe I'm slowing down."

Rangers remain in the hunt for a total of four trophies – including the UEFA Cup – but Smith refused to prioritise ahead of such a vital SPL clash.

He said: "As a manager do you concentrate on one to the detriment of the other? But what happens if you don't win the other one?

"You end up with nothing so you have to concentrate on every game as they come along.

"It's dangerous to look any farther."

Meanwhile, Steven Davis has revealed he would be willing to hold talks with Rangers over his future at the end of the season.

The midfielder has been a hit since joining on loan from Fulham in January and Smith has expressed a desire to retain his services beyond the summer.

"Once the season finishes I will go away, have a break and hopefully sort out my future after that," said Davis.

"What I can say is that I will listen to Rangers first. If they are an option then it's something I will consider.

Things have worked out well."

Most of the OF threads down before noon, can we try to stick to the football comments and leave the garbage aside. Hoping to see 3 points go Ibrox way tonight but it will definitely be a very tight match.

#1 Up until Sunday i was confident Gers would walk this tonight. I think however Celts will take heart from the victory over Motherwell. Im going for a scoring draw. If Gers play a tidy, keepball passing game from the off, we'll do it.

Daillyman 1,

Sad to see web strife broke out early on these pages.

Wouldn't it be great if the garbage could be kicked out of football, and not just from this site?

No 1 - Dailyman

Good shout. There are too many idiots just out to spoil it for everyone. Let's hope it's a good game and may it all be fair with no dubious decisions, cheating etc.

It would also be good if the fans refrained from the usual sectarian garbage.

Number 3 - Maxwell (no doubt a nod to the Beatles Maxwell's silver hammer track?)

Good shout a scoring draw might be just about right.

Come on the hoops just play your best and let's hope it's good enough.

BEMUSED EXILE,

My congratulations to Celtic on a vital victory tonight. It sounds as if they fully deserved it, so I certainly don't begrudge them.

Also nice to see that a referee who has previously been widely accused of being in RFC's pocket appears to have refereed the match pretty fairly.

So now the SPL title race is back on, and I think that this is the way that every true football fan would want it. I certainly loved the drama of 2003 and 2005, and that feeling wouldn't have diminished even if Celtic had edged their way to those titles.

Finally, it saddens me greatly that the main OF threads haven't survived the day again. I've become completely disillusioned with the tone of many of these forums in recent weeks, and I now plan to give myself a few weeks completely away from them in the forlorn hope that things might improve.

I have to say that the main culprits, by sheer weight of numbers, are my own side, the Rangers fans, although when a generally decent poster like Tim can take such delight at repeated use of the "H" word, as in post #7, then I feel like giving up.

Anyway, here's to an exciting climax to what's been an interesting league season.

BE, 8: Good post, BE, I agree with much of it, though your disdain with Tim's use of the H word is kinda hollow as you support the most bigoted anti Catholic Club in Europe.

Now, had McD scored that penalty, your closing quip would have been prophetic.

Great result for Celtic tonight. I thought we were the better team and Rangers were not really the threat I thought they would be. Good goal by Novo. Great goal by Naka. Timely intervention By JVOH. Ferguson and others causing trouble at the the end of the match. Sad situation. Whatever happened to losing and winning gracefully!
Could be a close finish to the SPL but I think we`ll probably shoot ourselves in the foot. Seems to be commonplace these days. Well done Celtic.

Let me just sing to the tune of Hands, Shoulders knees and toes....

Nakamura stuffed the gers, stuffed the gers
Nakamura stuffed the gers, stuffed the gers
He bent it, swerved it through the teddy bears
Nakamura stuffed the gers, stuffed the gers

Mon the hoops

11 Pax,

Some game and what a VICTORY not just for Celtic but a VICTORY for football.

Smith and co sent home with their tales between there legs.

Tonight Celtic showed just who is the best team in Scotland and we would be running away with the title is the refs had been fair this season.

It's still GAME ON.

ps...was a tad unlucky with my 3-1 prediction. eh?

Bemused my repeated use of the word H.U.N.S was a for a reason. It was the only word that rhymed with lunge.

Sorry if it offends but it's not sectarian.
