Robson: Fear is my spur at Parkhead

CELTIC midfielder Barry Robson insists the "fear of failure" will drive him on to retain his first-team place next season.
The Scotland international joined the Parkhead side from Dundee United in January but not until the final weeks of the season, where Celtic came from behind to clinch their third straight Clydesdale Bank Premier League title, did he establish himself
as a first pick in the Hoops' engine room.

However, the 29-year-old expects everyone to start next season with a clean slate under manager Gordon Strachan and he insists he has it all to do again to pin down a regular place.

"I don't see myself as a first choice, not in the slightest," he said. "I have a fear of failure. I don't want to fail in anything I do and I suppose that's a good way of looking at things.

"Everyone is probably like that in the football club. We don't want to do badly because if you do then you won't be in the side.

"So I feel as though I am at the bottom of the ladder again and I need to climb it. That's the way I approach every season – it doesn't matter where I am.

Robson added: "I don't think I've achieved everything and I don't take anything for granted.

"It's about work and trying to force my way in."

If fear truly is the driving force behind Barry Robson's game, then managers all over the country should be working on terrifying their players rather than encouraging them. However, I think he is just being modest. He is a player who shows NO fear, but causes plenty of it in opposition defences.
Robson should be a role model to every youngster hoping to reach the top in the game, & an inspiration to those who are not an immediate success.
Celtic did themselves a huge favour when they signed him.

#3 Agree entirely. Expecting even bigger things from Robson this season. With a good pre-season behind him, he could be a contender for Player of the Year

Robson knows that he will have to play well to keep one of the midfield berths at Celtic. The competition will be stiff with Scott Brown looking to create a stir this season.

There seems to be a real hunger in our side this year. I get the impression there's a feeling amongst them that although they won the championship, they let things slip a bit from their normal high standards, and there is a real desire to set the record straight.
