Brines admits error in vital Celtic decision

REFEREE Iain Brines has admitted he wrongly disallowed the goal which could have finished Celtic's title challenge.
Brines penalised Aberdeen's Zander Diamond for handball seconds before the defender blasted the ball into the top corner for what he thought was a last-gasp equaliser at Celtic Park on Saturday. Instead Celtic moved top of the Clydesdale Bank Premie
r League with a 1-0 victory. Television replays showed Diamond had clearly won the ball with his head before collecting a return pass from Barry Nicholson.

And Brines, in the 'whistleblower' section of the SFA's website, admitted he had got the decision "completely wrong".

"From the angle I had adopted, I observed the Aberdeen player Diamond jump to meet the ball and I believed he used his hand to aid the ball's flight beyond him," the referee explained.

"Immediately I blew my whistle awarding a free-kick to Celtic. The majority of players reacted to the whistle by stopping – the exception being Diamond who placed the ball into the Celtic goal. On reflection and having had the opportunity to view the incident via television, I fully accept that I called this incident completely wrong. Having adopted the position I did, it didn't allow me to gain the best view of what happened. It is clear that the goal should not have been disallowed."

Diamond was enraged by the decision on Saturday and criticised Brines for failing to discuss it. "I thought he had a poor game throughout," the 22-year-old said. "Saying I used my hand is an absolute joke and sums him up."

Those comments could yet land the defender in trouble, despite the referee's admission of error, with the SFA's general purposes committee due to meet at Hampden today.

If Celtic go on to win the title there will be an outcry from the Rangers camp. Brines will be Gers enemy no 1.

"From the angle I had adopted" & "Having adopted the position I did" Would never guess from Brines' statement that he's a pokiceman. Could have been right oot his pocket book at the sherrif court !!!!

Oh and refs have dine Rangers no favours this season.

They helped them to win the CIS cup and to get to the Scottish Cup Final. So I think Rangers would have a cheek to protest.

Can you imagine the furor if clueless Brines had chalked of a late equaliser for Celtic!

The conspiracy theory bawheeds would have these threads in meltdown.

once again the referees give the decision for the old firm, countless seasons go by,two managers who stood up to this nonsense was fergie and mcclean, least they put their arguements up front before at the build up ,to put the onus on the ref,as the crowd bay for more.He can admit all he likes the points are in the bag,it is just as obvious ,e.g.a late penalty, extra injury time, and the most blatent of all no offside.

How could a goal that was scored after the whistle when players had stopped be "wrongfully disallowed"?

The question that will never be answered is whether it would have been a goal if the ref hadn't blown his whistle!

This smells of the Andy Davis affair, how can you call seeing a handball that did'nt exist a mistake ? As we are not allowed to question the integrity of the match officials we will never know if they are cheats
