Caltongate campaigners turn to the UN

CAMPAIGNERS plan to lobby the UN to try and halt the controversial £300 million Caltongate development, it has been reported.
They are to ask the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to put Edinburgh on its endangered list, a stepping stone on the path to being stripped of World Heritage Status.

The Prince of Wales, who has warned about the growing threat of development to historical areas, is also being asked to offer his support.

Sally Richardson, of the Save Our Old Town campaign, said: "We will be encouraging everyone we can to inform Unesco about the threats to the World Heritage Site from Caltongate."

The protestors believe there is some sympathy for their complaints, particularly as Unesco had warned there had been "no adequate justification" for the demolition of two listed buildings.

Thomas Docherty, for the developer Mountgrange, said: "There is no justification for a Unesco investigation and these are wild suggestions."

Why can't people see that this is the best thing to happen the royal mile in hundreds of years? It will add a sophisticated modern distraction from tatty tartan shops and macscotties special whisky haggis shops for amercicans in kilts. Having a thriving new commercial and living area will reclaim lost credibility for Edinburgh and show the world we don't live in a museum.

As far as I can see, the only encroachment on the Royal Mile would be the new access to the proposed area. This part of the project would have to be done smartly.

And to those complaining about people only doing this for the money, no sh*t sherlock! If people were doing things for free, nothing would get done.

It's a World Heritage Site.

Listed buildings are to be demolished, and the architecture of the new build is dreadful.

"It's a World Heritage Site."

That's all well and good to put on a nice leaflet to get the tourists in but we're talking about the centre of a European capital here. How can it thrive if any sort of growth and development is stunted?

Visitors flock because it's a WHS.

No-one is trying to stunt growth - just sensitively conserve what's there and sensitively develop around that.

Caltongate is crass and insensitive and threatens the WHS status, which is about more than nice leaflets.

Buttress, notice how's there's no contribution today from Moscow Central 42. That's because of working Kooncil Friday hours and not being in the office after the EN comes out. Oh, and not having dial up or wireless from the office laptop which is taken home and not having a home PC. See, it pays to be watching from the inside.

Another disgrace, we should be stripped of the "so called world heritage site", as we are not, with this attitude from ex and new councillors

Bit of an understatement........Absolutely bonkers more like.

SOOT camapigning to remove World Heritage Status. Sounds like something only Colin Fox and his Trot-Nat alliance would come up with.

Sheep worrier - up north, I think you should have a word with the Good Doctor, he may be able to assist you in breaking your strange habit. I take it you only 'worry' sheep?

Let me think how much the St James' Centre has improved Edinburgh. I wonder how much of the same bull was put forward by its developers?
It's the OLD TOWN. There's a clue in the name. Edinburgh already has plenty other horrendous (imo) developments... not my thing, but that's the way it is... the difference here is they're destroying a unique part of the city. There's enough areas of Edinburgh that look like anywhere else in the UK, let's leave this one alone.
The council should hang their heads in shame. If they can feel shame that is. Doubtful in the politics game.
Do people REALLY believe what the council say? And what developers standing to make HUGE sums of money say? Really? Want to buy some land on the moon? Just get in touch...

Beachcomber,

I don't think you were told - Might have something to do with being a fan of Tommy.

Are you pleased that councillors have approved the Caltongate scheme?
Yes, Edinburgh has to change to survive and thrive
Yes, as long as the Royal Mile tenements are preserved
