SPARTA boxing coach Mark Geraghty today issued a warning to Fundo Mhura ahead of his Scottish Senior Championship semi-final.
Leith Victoria middleweight Mhura has been drawn to fight Lochee's David Drummond, a former heavyweight, who went the distance with Sparta's Jacki Kubas two years ago at Ingliston.
The clash will take place on March 14 at Dalkeith Miners' clu
b, and Geraghty said: "This guy Drummond has boiled down from being a heavyweight to a very strong middleweight.
"I've seen Drummond fight a couple of times at middleweight and he is tremendously strong at that weight, has a good chin – proved by standing up to Kubas' bombs – and can bang too so I'm tipping Drummond to beat Mhura at Dalkeith next week."
However, Mhura, whose spectacular knockout last Saturday at Lasswade over another Dundonian opponent, Andrew McKelvie, is still a major talking point amongst local boxing fans, is unlikely to be too worried about facing up to Drummond.
His coach, Jack Graham, said: "Drummond may be a strong boy but we're confident that Fundo can see off his challenge in a distance fight."
Geraghty, meantime, was very positive and upbeat about the semi-final chances of his Eastern bantamweight champion Gareth Stemp, who goes head to head on Friday at Aberdeen's Treetops Hotel against his Scottish semi-final opponent from Glasgow Dennistoun, John Thomson.
Claimed Geraghty: "Thomson's come-forward style is tailor made for Stemp's counter-punching tactics."
Meanwhile, Lochend middleweight Kieran Finn has been handed the chance to knock another ex-Scottish champion out of the championships at Dalkeith when he clashes with Motherwell Jerviston's Alex Montgomery while, on the same Dalkeith bill Gilmerton light-welterweight, John Thain must beat Port Glasgow southpaw Don Brown to progress to the finals.
