LEITH VICTORIA boxer Fundo Mhura – once told to quit the ring due to persistent eye problems – has been cleared to fight again.
Mhura, who hasn't fought since last summer, developed an acute sight problem during bouts caused by his eyelashes scraping his cornea and temporarily blinding him.
However, a recent medical letter sent to bosses at Amateur Boxing Scotland will
allow the middle-weight to resume ring combat in the Scottish senior championships preliminary rounds at Lasswade this Saturday.
Mhura, a 2005 European Bronze medallist, confirmed: "A letter to ABS bosses from the people at Moorfields Hospital, who treated my eye problems, states that I can now resume my career. I'm just so chuffed to be able to compete again and, as far as I'm concerned, Saturday at Lasswade will be the first step in winning a Scottish senior middleweight title to go with the welterweight crown I won at the 2004 Senior championships."
Mhura added: "I've also been told by the British Olympic team bosses that, if the English middleweights don't qualify in Pescara, Italy, this week ,then I'll be in the frame again for Olympic selection for the Beijing games.
"It's been a long, worrying road for me after it looked at one stage my eye problems were going to scupper my ring career but now I regard that as being behind me.
"I sparred lots of rounds with our Scottish junior champion Sandy Forsyth and came through that with absolutely no problems."
