This publicity should get him top dollar for the goods and a couple greeting gigs.

Another scottish Alky story.

"He still likes a drink" seems to be the significant line from this story. You have to give it up completely, mate.
4

3 exactly . Its in code like because we dont like to face up to it in scotland.

I feel sorry for Ken Buchanan. I remember him from the days when he had the Victoria Park Hotel (then called, strangely enough, Ken Buchanans!). We had my mum's funeral meal there and he couldn't have been nicer to us. It is always sad when someone falls on hard times after having hit the big time and its about time we in this country stopped being so ready to kick a man when he's down. Good luck to you, Ken, whatever else you have done with your life, I always found you to be a gentleman and I hope things get better for you soon. Maybe you should cut down on the drink, but that is your decision, not a problem as long as it doesn't affect anyone else and I doubt that it does.
6

nSyratzcGlaw,

16/02/2009 12:54:34
I often see him sleeping in the doorway of the Abbey.

Not a problem.
7

Jingsitsme,

EDINBURGH 16/02/2009 12:56:03
#5 - yes you may feel sorry for him but all that doesn't wash with me.

I've no sympathy for self inflicted drink drink drink people as there's that much help out there etc but the person has to take responsibility for her/himself!

If he has drunk his money away over the years it is not up to us to bail him out. He just like all others selling goods that have some money in them.

Just because he was famous and all that does not give him immunity.

Useless piece of news to put in paper anyway.
8

Few Against Many,

16/02/2009 13:02:06
7, really who cares if you have sympathy for the man or not. the fact of the matter is that he was most probably the most talented boxer Britain has ever produced and was at one time a hero to many. to see him broken like this tears at my heart.
9

nSyratzcGlaw,

16/02/2009 13:05:05
Well, for many they have to hit rock bottom before they can make a final decision about it.

You have to wonder what rock bottom is for Ken, but good luck mate.
10

Heidthebaw .,

The mans a boxing legend, Ken you do as you want, forget about the jealous remarks on here,
i can remember when you won the belts good on you lad - good on you.
11

Bill MacD,

No one has forced him. He's drunk himself into debt and decided to cash in his valuables just like many other drug addicts choose to. That's his right. But don't make him sound like a victim. It's his own life choices for which he is responsible.
12

Heidthebaw .,

16/02/2009 13:07:45
You were the white Mohamid Ali (CLAY)
13

Jingsitsme,

#8 perhaps it does tear your heart out but that is no help to him.

He has to help himself now!!! He's had so much help in the past. Alkies have to STOP drinking. No wonder our NHS service is going down hill fast with all the money being wasted trying to help them.

You won't say your comments if you go into hospital and they tell you sorry you can't have your op we have given your bed to an alki!!

All what he was is irrelevant now.
14

Few Against Many,

16/02/2009 13:34:11
13,

What he was is still relevent, otherwise this wouldn't be the top story of the afternoon.

As for an alki being in my hospital bed. It depends what ward that was in. If we both had cancer for example would I have more of a right to treatment than him?

Alcoholism is a disease, according to the world health Organisation, one without a cure.

However, its up to the individual at the end of the day. If this can happen to someone who owned a hotel and was a world champion at his sport - what chance do some of the other poor sods have ?
16

r chee bold,

16/02/2009 13:53:31
I remember reading about him when he had a couple of light refreshments, a guy came up to him and said, see you, you are nothing but a has been, Ken replied, correct I am a has been, but you will always be a never been, good luck to Ken.

Ken Buchanan, got cheated out of his world title by a low blows. Edinburgh have had the finest ever Scottish and British boxer, to have graced the land. When we have got rid of the PC brigade and pansy lovers in our City Council, this man will go down in history, despite them.
18

Few Against Many,

16/02/2009 14:22:30
I seriously think we should have a statue of the man somewhere in the city centre. We have very important looking dudes with beards everywhere and a wee dug. Why not Ken Buchanan?
19

Dragonlord,

16/02/2009 14:37:51
5# The hotel was the problem, never made money and he should have opened a pub or a bookies, Never seen a poor bookie.

definately one of the greatest lightweights of all time
fought duran when he was in his prime and would have won if not for the low blow pity he was badly managed
and the leeches in the background robbed him I see him every week always smartly dressed as if going to an interview would be a great coach for upcomers

#7 I think I'll just quote the bard to you "O wad some power the gift to gie us to see oorsels as ithers see us." and another one "there but for the gift of God go you or I." Have some compassion. I agree with Ken's comment. He has tried hard over the years to make a go of his life. Alcoholism is not an easy thing to deal with, but with the help of friends I am sure he will win through. I always found him to be a nice man and took him as I found him. He was the pride of Edinburgh once and rightly so. I'm sorry he is selling his belts but if they go on display he can always go and see them and be glad in the knowledge that others will be allowed to see them too.

I used to see Richard Demarcos brother a lot, very smartly dressed he was , unfortunatley it was always in dive boozers and the clothes fooled no-one.

django, i think youve been suckered by rambo movies. If the guy had been a world champion shot putter would you still get so misty eyed ?

Working class asshole.

Linmal,

Just one question? How many of the posters have achieved world wide acclaim for anything? How many are famous locally?

Ken Buchanan was a legend, correction, is a legend. He has fallen on hard times, that is regrettable, especially for him. But whatever he is now you cannot take his proud memories away from him or from the people of Edinburgh who witnessed it.

Again, I wish him well and hope that he lives the rest of his life in peace surrounded by friends and family who care about him.

Good luck to you, Ken.

Jingsitsme,

EDINBURGH 16/02/2009 17:10:18
#23 - perhaps you are looking in the mirror and seeing yourself! Sounds like it!

Compassion goes out the door eventually as an aid to so called recovery. If the guy does not want to really change nothing or nobody can help him.

Perhaps you are in the same boat as Ken so look in the mirror or got stuck in the past with nostalga but don't recite poetry you don't even appear to know very well.

I'm not stooping to your level but the phrase 'away and bile yer heid' might resonate with you!!!

I well remeber Ken Buchanan coming back from Madison Sqare Gdns. in an Open top bus when he defended the World Boxing Lightweight Title. He received 40 K for that .That and the Duran fight must have netted himself plenty. In 1972 40 K plus was a fortune. He squandered that money.Anyone with a modicum of sense would have been sitting back now in comfort. The man was a fool.
30

Tynieweeguy,

I remember Ken coming into Balderstones Newsagents in Clermiston just after winning the world title and being offered some free sweeties, I thought he's got all that money and gets free sweeeties and I've got holes in the elbows of my tank top and get nothin'? Could be that I had just told them to shove their 2 sacks a night paper round for 2/6 a week ;-)

If the people on here were alive when Kenny won his titles I bet they were cheering him on and may have even mad a few quid at the bookies out of his prowess in the ring. 29# He did have a modicum of sense and invested in a hotel, it didn't prove to be a good choice but sh*t happens to us all at times.

I hope he gets a few quid for his belts, he earnerd them through hard graft and bravery, how many of us would step into a boxing ring? I also hope he doesn't squander it on drink but if he does it's his money.

7 Jingsitsme,

How sactimoneous can you get ?
You say "it is not up to us to bail him out.", prey tell us where it says that in the article ?
Have you ever met the man and got to know him ?
If you have you would know aside from his problems he is an absolute gentleman through and through.

Good luck KB you can win this as you did with most of your fights
32

Spanish jambo,

16/02/2009 21:16:42
#30 Not being funny but how could your tank top have holes in the elbows if tank tops don't have sleeves?
BTW, agree with what you say, he's earned the right to choose what to do with HIS belts and who are we to judge what he does with the proceeds? We all know what we wouldn't like him to do with the dosh but again it's his decision.
33

Jingsitsme,

EDINBURGH 16/02/2009 21:38:12
#31 - nothing of the sort!!

You are all saying poor man etc etc etc but he has had and still has chance to pick himself up if he stops drinking completely. That choice is his and it's up to him.

No one can help him but himself. If he wants to drink himself into the ground he has to choose. All the love, support etc wont work alone. Look at GEorgie Best and Paul Gasgoigne!

I don't wish him bad but it's his problem to take the steps not ours and until that day really happens no one can help him so no point bailing him out with sympathy yet again - it's HIM THAT HAS TO ACT!!
34

nSyratzcGlaw,

16/02/2009 22:56:46
And let Ken be a lesson to ye young scots.

You never know , maybe he will defeat the drink after another ten rounds - stage a comeback, defeating Drago the big russian after running up the Scott Monument to the tune of Sunshine on Leith.
35

Tynieweeguy,

32# Spanish, irony my dear maroon friend!!!
36

Linmal,

#23 You don't know me and thankfully, from your comments, I don't know you.

Ken Buchanan has problems. We all know that. But only the lowest of the low would kick a man when he's down. Ken would never do that. I don't pretend to know him personally, although I did meet him on several occasions some years ago and always found him to be a pleasant man to talk to and always courteous.

I don't have a drink problem, but that is just luck isn't it? Any one of us could be afflicted in this way.

I just hope that you don't fall on hard times and end up being spoken about in the way you speak about others.

As for the poetry, it came directly from a Burns' poetry book - so I have every right to quote it as it is correct.

Now leave the man alone and get on with your life.
37

Linmal,

Livingston 17/02/2009 13:40:44
#33 I agree with you to a point, but he also needs help and support. Its not an easy road. I know people who have successfully beaten it but it has been a long hard road and not without a few setbacks.

Give the guy a break and hope that he can do it this time.
