Published Date: 14 March 2008
BIRD flu is believed to have been detected at an Edinburgh farm raising fears of a potential outbreak in the Capital.
Routine tests carried out by farm workers found signs of the virus in some birds at Easter Norton Farm, near Edinburgh Airport.

Veterinary experts do not believe it is the more dangerous H5N1 strain of the virus – which is potentially deadly to humans in rare cases.

Other strains are understood to carry no health risks to humans.

Secondary tests are currently being carried out by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in an effort to confirm this theory. The results are expected by the end of the day.

At Easter Norton Farm this afternoon, there was a sign on the gate banning all entry without permission and ordering that all vehicles which do enter have their wheels disinfected first, under the Animal Health Act 1981 and Avian Influenza or Influenza of Avian Origin in Mammals. A bucket of disinfectant was left by the gate.

William Pollock, from the farm, said: "Nobody is allowed in or out, that is all we can say just now."

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: "At the moment routine follow up tests are being carried out. There are no causes for concern."

"sparking fears of an outbreak in the Capital."

Unbelievably irresponsible journalism.

Since this is not H5N1, shouldn't you point out that while "an outbreak" might be possible, only birds or those who keep them need care?

This is bird flu after all: human beings in Edinburgh only have to care about the regular kind which puts you in bed for a couple of days.

If this virus is dangerous to headless chickens then the council will need to be put into quarantine for their own safety.

A relative works for the Shell Oil company - about 4 years ago they moved him to South America and I haven't seen him since, but he still thinks about us; every xmas he sends us a nice present.

This past xmas he sent us a LIVE bird. Green bird, pretty tall with a little yellow top notch on his head and some red on it as well as a hooked beak - he sent it to us live from South America.

I tell you something - that bird was delicious.

Yes Sir.

We had him for xmas dinner with all the trimmings.

Well, after xmas the relative called. Wanting to know if we got the bird.

I said, "We got him."

Wanting to know how we liked him.

I said, "He was delicious."

He said, "You don't mean you ate that bird!"

I said, "Well, of course we did."

My relative got all upset and had a hissy fit.

He said, "I paid a fortune for that bird!"

He said, "That thing's worth a fortune".

He said, "That bird could speak 2 different languages".

I said, "Well - he should have said something".

If they stopped construction work for one healthy bird, they'll probably stop Scotland for a bunch of sick ones.

An elephant a lion and a chicken were staking their claims as to which of them was the most feared.
“I stamp my feet and all of the Serengeti trembles” said the elephant.
“I roar and the jungle cowers” said the tiger.
“Ah, that’s nothing,” said the chicken “I sneeze and the world panics”.
