EDINBURGH'S WBO super-featherweight boxing champion Alex Arthur will defend his crown against Dagenham's former British, European and Commonwealth featherweight champion, Nicky Cook on September 6 at Manchester's MEN Arena.
And a win over the Essex man could set up a bout with Bolton's Amir Khan. Confirming both Arthur's defence against Cook and – if victorious – the dream Scotland v. England, Arthur v. Khan scrap.

Frank Warren spokesman, Richard Maynard, commente
d: "We tried very hard to get American-based ring legend Marco Antonio Barrera for Alex as a first title defence but that fell through so Alex will now fight Nicky Cook.

Cook is a former world-rated British featherweight champion, who was previously stopped in his last attempt at a version of the world featherweight title inside the distance.

"But we know that Nicky is a quality fighter who can test Alex Arthur.

"Frank Warren has also told Alex that, if he sees off the challenge of Nicky Cook successfully, then Arthur could face Bolton's Commonwealth lightweight champion Amir Khan, in a WBO title defence in what would be a great England v. Scotland fight that the fans would love."

"But first Arthur must meet and beat Nicky Cook on September 6 in Manchester for that to become a reality."

There is also firm evidence that challenger Cook has a fair dig, having stopped around 50 per cent of his first 25 opponents inside the distance.

Meanwhile, Arthur himself responded: "Now I know who I'll be defending against I can plan my training regime accordingly.

"I will take nothing for granted against Cook – who has been there and done it title-wise – although I look forward to retaining my WBO title against him."

"In this connection, I'm planning to go to Cyprus for ten days to work out with my conditioning coach, John Watson, to ensure that I'm absolutely sharp for Cook in September.

"I also plan to have Irish former world super-bantamweight champion Wayne McCullough in my corner, as before, against Nicky Cook."

Capital ace Arthur was also confident about the outcome of any future ring clash between himself and Khan, saying: "I'm a proven puncher. Glasgow's Willie Limond decked Khan and he has nothing like my punch power so, while I have great respect for Amir, I would fancy my chances in what would be a great fight while it lasted.

"But first I must overcome Nicky Cook."

Khan would murder AAAAAA out of sight. Arthurs defence is woeful and he'd be eating leather all night in my opinion.

Robster,

Here, there, everywhere. 07/07/2008 16:11:52
Haud oan, have ah missed somethin? Khan is a lightweight, Arthur a super feather, so how can Arthur defend against Khan (assuming he is successful against Cook) Is Khan moving down to super feather? If the fight is made at lightweight then it wont be a defence of the WBO superfeather title, so is Arthur going to give up a "world title" to box for Khan's commonwealth strap??? Somethin isny right here, once again Warren is pullin the wool over our eyes (or tryin to) That brings me to my next point, They tried to get Barerra for Arthurs defence, couldny get him so they get the next best thing in Cook!!! Aye right ye are, they (sports network)must think we are all numpties up here. If they couldny get Barerra (which I think is also a lot of tosh) then surely there must be better than Cook to test Arthur?? Maybe they could try and get a full blown super feather. But then again maybe sports network doesny have one that fits the bill. Arthur V's Cook (two sports network fighters) Arthur V's Khan (another two sports network fighters) Only one winner there in both those fights.......step forward and get your trophy Frank Warren...

Robster,
You've got it spot on. SN are past masters at the old smoke and mirrors trick. Frankie boy is only interested in one thing and it isn't this side of Hadrian's wall! It is the deep pockets he has in his Saville Row suits, and he'll line them as soon as look at you. How many Scots boxers have seen the benefit of SN altruism in the last couple of years? Even AAA doesn't feature too large on SN's radar as an earner for them. The fact that he (FW) has a share in both of them contesting this "world championship" has an odour which makes Peterheid fish market smell like Calvin Klein. Whatever happened to Kenny Anderson's burgeoning career under their guidance - answer the square root of naff all. Gary Young same same! He's ended up going to LA. Wake up professional boxers throughout Scotland! SN despite the facade, are only really interested in SN. Of course this is all speculation on my part, and not to be construed as the thoughts of the Scotsman newspaper, just in case the lawyer FW employs assumes this to be libellous.
