AUTHOR Alexander McCall Smith was today set to kick off a series of events to highlight modern Scottish literature.
He was expected to deliver the annual St Andrew's Lecture to Scotland Europa members in Brussels. Authors Don Paterson, Anne Donovan and AL Kennedy are to participate in future events in the Scottish Writers Series.

Finance Minister Tom McCabe - who also attended an exhibition of work in the European Parliament by influential Scottish painter John Bellany - announced the Scottish Writers Series.

He said: "I have no doubt the Scottish Writers Series will be a huge success."
