Drink figures get even worse

SCOTS are drinking even more heavily than originally believed, the Scottish Government has warned.
Figures on alcohol consumption have been revised after it emerged the number of units per drink had been underestimated.

People are not only drinking more heavily than ever, they are choosing stronger drinks.

Recalculated figures from the 2003 Scottish Health Survey show that 34 per cent of men and 23 per cent of women drink too much.

Two in five men and a third of women are "binge drinking" at least double the recommended daily intake – four units for men and three units for women – on their heaviest drinking day.

Four units. That's two pints. Most of us would consider two pints barely a warmup. I drink more coffee than that in an average day.

The reason these folks aren't getting through is that they live on a different planet.

So there HASN'T been an increase in drinking then. What they have ACTUALLY done is move the goalposts and then pretend that the actual consumption has changed instead.

It's all a con to justify higher taxes and more restrictions.

Now haven't I always said that they've re-defined "binge drinking" to mean anything more than their pathetically low limits? For the information of those who have been taken in by this, if someone has several drinks of an evening---and maybe even gets drunk---they are doing what is known as "hanging one on" or similar.

If they repeat this process night after night, maybe even continuing drinking through the next day as well, and keep that up for two or three days, then they are on a binge---in other words they are binge-drinking.

You are NOT binge-drinking if you dare to have three or four pints of beer in any given evening. As Fernando says, two pints of beer is hardly even getting started.

You're right, guys. Every time I see yet another of these bloody government "awareness campaigns" my first thought is to have a drink and not to contemplate the meaning of life. So here's one unit for the road ... and another few for the pavement. Cheers.

I read recently that an old guy in Paris saw on their underground a sign that said "One is too many". The idea was that a bottle of wine per day was too much alcohol.

However he could remember signs after the war that "Three is too many".

We're in the same position. Underemployed doctors, who haven't got enough to do fixing us, are trying to find more remunerative employment on the taxpayer teat micromanaging what we eat and drink every day.

Like other nosy politicians, we should tell them to mind their own goddamn business.

I drank a bottle of wine last night---a very nice Chardonnay to be exact.
