FIVE women a day are being charged with violent behaviour in the Lothians, according to new figures on female offending revealed today.
More than 1500 women were arrested for an assault last year, and nearly 2000 were charged with antisocial behaviour in public.

Experts said today that "growing numbers" of women were being embroiled in alcohol-related offences in Edinburgh, and b
lamed the binge-drinking "ladette" culture.

The figures, collated by Lothian and Borders Police and released to the Evening News under freedom of information laws, also reveal:

• Nearly two women a day were caught with drugs last year, while 172 were charged with dealing illegal substances.

• Women were charged with 1417 separate shoplifting offences.

• Thirty-six women were charged with possession of an offensive weapon last year.

• More than 200 women have been charged with serious assault in the past four years, as well as 1561 minor assaults last year.

• Women were charged with 18 cases of robbery and assault.

• And more than 1000 charges of resisting arrest by officers have been made since 2000.

Drug and alcohol campaigners called on more work to be done to support women with addictions from offending. The number of prisoners at Cornton Vale Prison has doubled in the last decade. Nearly all the inmates have a history of drug or alcohol problems.

Tom Wood, head of Edinburgh's Alcohol and Drug Action Team, said the trend for women being charged by police has been "steadily rising for 30 years".

He added: "As women, particularly young women, play an increasingly equal part in society, it is inevitable they will play a greater part in crime too. They go out to drink as men do, so you are bound to see them becoming involved in public order offences.

"With shoplifting, theft and other acquisitive crimes, there is a link between them and women funding a drug or alcohol habit."

Jack Law, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, said: "Alcohol doesn't cause crime, people do. But there's no doubt that people who have had too much to drink are more likely to get involved in criminal behaviour."

The number of women charged with drink-driving is also on the increase in the Lothians. Only 30 women were charged with the same offence in 2004, but this swelled to 136 last year.

Martin Bonnar, of Turning Point Scotland, which treats many women with substance misuse problems, said: "Women accessing our services often fund their habits through shoplifting and theft, while we also see them involved with breaches of the peace."

Unfortunatley these problems will never go away unless the people themselves wanna better themselves and work for a living and believe me the majority think workings for mugs.

People should be given 6 months dole as a maximum then cut off unless they have a vaild reason not to work

People who have worked all their days paying taxes etc and have been unemployed for reasons they cant help should be rewarded with more money after keeping the economy afloat and these bams in tracksuits

No time for these layabouts and I grew up in one of the tougher flats in Leith.

No surprises here. I have always said women are the most abusive - and this report backs up what I know. Every day I am abused by school children - many of them females. It all goes back to the way they are brought up. Unfortunately these days you cannot thrash your children, and guess what - they are now out of control. Look at what happened on the Meadows earlier this week. Innocent people seriously assaulted by a female who has obviously not been brought up on a good thrashing. Some people state that by thrashing children you are encouraging them to be violent. Well I was brought up on a good thrashing - I am not a violent person - and I am extremely courteous and polite, no criminal convictions. So why are todays youngsters so violent? It's because they do what they like when they like because there is no punishment. Bring back hanging, thrashing, and the stocks to bring them into line - it never did me any harm.

There is no problem. Government got what it wanted, equality between men and women. That it was acheived at the level of yobette rather than gentlette should not be surprising; widespread equality, when acheived, is not often done at a very pleasent level.

When were you last hanged then Tony - presumably after your above posting?

Basically I agree with you, all these scum need to be eradicated as they have no useful place in our society.

It is also not the case that drink and drugs are entirely to blame as many of the female scumbags I see are sober (usually very young), but offensive, foul-mouthed, ignorant and dangerous with it.

Time to wipe out all neds/nedettes.

Why not start safari-type holidays to attract overseas visitors using neds/nedettes as live targets in Scotland's way over-populated housing schemes? We should offer to pay for the ammunition and supply the hunters with the necessary weapons.

The safari-type holidays simply don't work. All that happens is the Neds and Nedettes seek sanctuary inside their local chippy. I should know. I've chased them there often enough.

Has anyone ever been inside one of these so-called "Chip Shops"? I'd heard that men of the cloth, good God-fearing people, worked there, however I saw no friars. Just some fat bints in white hats who inquired of me, in the most threatening tones, whether I wanted my sausage battered.

Ban these chip shops. They're foul dens of iniquity, and the cause of much of the malaise in society today.

"Neds and Nedettes seek sanctuary inside their local chippy"

Abe, that could considerably simplify matters. When they do that, the hunters lock them in and set fire to the premises. Afterall, none of the public 'phones in the area will work (the said neds/nedetts having vandalised them) and the Fire Brigade won't respond anyway due to fear of assault and attack in these scum-infested areas.

On second thought, maybe "Peter - very disappointed/concerned" is right. Maybe we should just kill people we don't like very much - or, as he more eloquently put it "eradicate" the "scum" who "have no useful place in our society". I do hope I have a useful place in our society, although I can't be sure, which makes me a little bit nervous. But hey, with a bit of luck, maybe I'll pull through.

It is not just drunkenness that is a problem with women . In my job I encounter far more arrogant and rude women on the phone than men . There are too many second-raters in jobs who clearly have an inflated sense of their own importance , which long ago was a male trait .

"But hey, with a bit of luck, maybe I'll pull through"

I surely hope so #34, but sorry I can't remember/know if 'Watermelon Gut' is a terminal condition.

The reason for my disquiet re certain members of society (mainly the inhabitants of Council Estates) is their ability when drunk (or sober) to cause mindless and needless harm to others. I worked in the old RIE for approx 10 years and remember the carnage in A&E every Thursday - Sunday evening largely due to assaults carried out by drunks and junkies.

The subject of this article deals with the increasing number of women (drunk/drugged) who become involved in serious crime/assaults. Obviously this figure must be on the 'up', especially in Edinburgh which is now a major 'target' for both 'hen' and 'stag' nights. I see a lot of 'hen night' action (I live just off the Royal Mile) both as a result of the pubs in the area and the close proximity of hostels where the participants can 'crash-out'.

There is no point in trying to excuse/justify the behaviour of many of these people, they are just plain malicious, drunk or sober and they need to be much more severley dealt with by the law when they transgress.

Drink does not make people stupid. Getting drunk only results in the stupid behaviour of this sort if you are stupid already.

It does not follow that because a person drinks and even gets drunk, he/she will behave in the manner outlined here. To assume that is the case is stupidity itself.

The people behaving in this manner are breaking the law. Enforce the existing laws. We do not need or want any more stupid nanny state laws or taxes on drink. End of story.

There's a charity which offers money to junkies to get sterilised:

From personal experience as a boy and adult i am not shocked or remotely surprised to read this, women are like this, like any man! Who ever thought that women are less aggressive or into all forms of abuse than men? Well, unless your a blinkered feminist, womens aid activist or just plain daft. Its about time we all woke up to the clear plain reality that women are and can be just as abusive and criminal as men. However not all men and not all women are this way inclined thank God! To blame the Ned culture is too strong as in all classes of society there are all forms of abuse and violence. My grudge is that for too long now men have always been slandered and slated as the brute perpretrators of violence and the zero tolerance propaganda industry machine feeds these miss-truths and have done for years. It needs to stop now and looked at in an equal perspective. Check out the home office report on domestic violence 191 and the nspcc reports on the perpretators of child maltreatment. We just have to stop blaming dady!!

50- There ARE doubts especially in domestic violence. Men hit harder but women hit too in equal numbers! As far as men being the main perertrators yes there are many and stats show that it is men bettween 18 and 24 that are more at risk from violence than women, All this glass needs to be shattered especially if children are at risk and stats show the greater risk is not with the dad! There is a film on the net called Bull Busters give it a view, then do some research on the net on male victims of domestic violence then read the reports on dv that i mentioned in my last comment. All i am saying is that as a society we need to be honest about the facts not the perception which is almost fiction.

Duncan in Edinburgh,

#44 But surely all of us know people who prove this assertion to be false? I certainly know plenty of folk who are perfectly intelligent, effective members of society when sober, but for whom the effect of alcohol is severe mood changes, loss of inhibition, and as a result, the propensity to cause bother.

Your argument appears to be based on your belief that *you* don't have those behaviours when drunk, therefore everyone who does must be stupid. But this is a non-sequitor, and the initial hypothesis is suspect anyway - which of us truly knows what we are like when we are drunk?
