CONTESTANTS in this year's Miss West Lothian contest have lent their support to a new initiative to tackle underage drinking.
West Lothian Council has allocated £250,000 annually over the next three years to help fund the new strategy.

Police will work with West Lothian's Youth Action Project and Drug Action Team and the council to educate young people about alcohol and drugs issues.

The council will also provide a programme of activities for youngsters including street work, youth cafes, midnight football, music, dance and arts.

Entrants in this year's Miss West Lothian competition are backing the new action plan.

Lindsey Torrance, 18, from Uphall, is one of this year's entrants, and she said: "This is a worthy cause because it demonstrates how there are alternative activities for young people rather than just hanging about streets and getting into trouble."

Couldn't agree more. That is tackling the root cause of the problem rather than imposing restrictions on those who are not breaking the law or causing trouble.

...like entering two-bit fashion contests? Now, that's what I call a positive role model.

#2, That's right put a youngster down when they're trying to do their best. Idiot.

I doubt the council's plan will make much of a dent in underage drinking in this neck of the woods. It seems to be an ingrained culture for many these days. still I suppose anything's worth a try.

Today's Vote

What more can be done to stop drunks congregating in the city’s streets?
The police should step up patrols and move them on
More use should be made of public drinking bans
Nothing, such people will always be with us
