SportScotland looks "equally favourably on new or refurbishment projects". This is interesting as Council leader Ewan Aitken stated the exact opposite on camera at a recent 'Save Meadowbank' meeting. In his attempt to ward off criticisms of the sell-off, would Rev. Aitken really go so far as to break the 9th commandment by lying? Or is this just another example of his and his party’s utter ignorance on an issue that only now they are being forced to take seriously.
It would seem that those concerned for this fiasco are attempting to pass the buck. Well, I’m afraid the buck stops with you and your council colleagues, Ewan. Your future as a councilor is directly related to the decision you make over Meadowbank.
This Newspaper indicates 87% support for saving Meadowbank, Ewan. While the BBC reported that “a council spokesperson said it had no statutory obligation to consult on the demolition”, you yourself point out that, “it's always helpful to hear the view of people, that's what you do in a democracy.”
If, before May 3rd, you develop a genuine concern for democracy and the interests of the public, not only will you prove your sanity, but you’ll demonstrate a willingness to listen to the public when they speak their mind that is sadly absent among our elected representatives.
As you know, Ewan, I am a council candidate for SOLIDARITY in the ward that covers Meadowbank. However, the significance of the stadium locally and of the democratic principle globally, is such that if the council observes the obvious public mandate to save Meadowbank, I pledge to vote for you myself.
If your loyalty remains with the private financiers and housing developers, your prospects look bleak. You decide whether going ahead with the demolition would be worth your job, Ewan. The electorate will then judge you as either brave, ignorant, or as a total sell-out to the socialist principles you may have once held.
