Don't the Scots have anything else to go on about except knocking England? You Scots had every chance to qualify for the World Cup but didn't come close. Now you can't even see past the permanent chips on your shoulders to be good sports and support your neighbor.
You are living in the past and it is quite boring. I can't wait to wear my England World cup Champions shirt through the streets of Glasgow.

Its frankly embarassing. When will these people grow up and stop defining how Scottsh they are by how much they dislike England? The commentators excuse is just a cowardly way out, they would find another reason if it wasnt that. The other favourite is that the English wouldnt support Scotland against foreign teams- complete rubbish. They absolutely would support Scotland and the other home nations. Mind you I'm not suprise if they started not to now, given our childish behaviour. Me? If they do well, good luck to them. I dont have to dislike them to be a proud and knowledgeable Scot.

The English can rant on about it all they want that they would support us in the World Cup if we had made it and they hadn't but it's all lies. To every English person who says we need to look at our attitude because we won't support them should think how good their attitude is when they laugh at the poor results of the Scottish National Team! We can support whoever we please and if you want to talk about 'chips on shoulders' maybe you should stop thinking we all hate you because we aren't supporting you!

What kind of a nation is it that defines itself on negativities like anti-Englishness? I used to always support Scotland when England were not involved (eg the 74 and 78 World Cups). Not any longer.

To Caroline from London - one of the main reasons that Scots are fed up with English commentators (not all English people) is that THEY are the ones living in the past. Remind me, how many decades is it since England actually won the thing????

Are you people blind to what is going on? The rise of English nationalism is becoming dangerous. Do not be fooled into believing they care one iota about our little midden. though when they do dump us the proverbial poo will hit the fan up here. And the guy with the flags is a sad case which just shows how backward scotland is.

If you feel you cant support a certain team then you shouldn't ! When i watch England play i cannot help but wish them to be beaten...is that bad ? i don't know but it is how i feel. I am really fed up with 1966 being mentioned at every opertunity. Can i quote a date 1967 the first game England world cup winners played Scotland...the score England 2 Scotland 3.... not a bad result i think.

With a Scots dad and English mum, I was born in Scotland but grew up in England so speak with an English accent and of course every Scot I've spoken to in the last 11 years I've lived here thinks I'm English. I think the whole thing is a joke but I do get irritated by some (definitely not all) narrow minded Scottish eejits who are using this World Cup as a chance to express their racism (because that's what it is). There's also a lot of racism expressed by English but rarely against Scots. Where I went to school it was all against asians. There's a lesson to be learned for all of us here - it's dangerous and destructive to be 'against' any country, race, religion, nationality etc. Positive patriotism is to be encouraged - why should it have to involve 'dissing' another nation? A message to the significant number of racist Scots - grow up and focus your attention on supporting the tartan army instead of bashing the English lions.

I am a Scot living in Denmark, who also failed to qualify. I also chose to join the Official T&T Supporters Club rather than support England. In Denmark there is the same rivalry against Sweden, but that will not deter me from supporting them in their next game. Why not? They´re playing England.

To Caroline in London: until there is a UK team, Scotland can bloody well support whichever team they like, "neighbours" or not. Sorry to bore you to death, but speaking as a Scottish-Canadian, the horrendous ramifications of England's tyranny are felt to this very day in terms of language and culture. It is very real, whether you find it boring or not. If you want to live in a fantasy land where there is no rivalry between Scotland and England, so be it. If you want to chastise someone for living in the past, try the English fans who are presently giving Nazi salutes in Germany.

I remember being in packed pubs in london in 1974 and watching archie gemmel score against holland, the whole pub went wild for scotland.
I really don't understand why scottish people think the english have it in for them. I know there is a lot of anti-english sentiment in scotland, but i dont hear it in england. it seems that the average english person pays for our history every time there is a sporting event. it is hard to work out who wants to beat us the most. Argentina? Germany? Australia? Italy? the list is actually endless.
If a latin team is in the world cup, of course all the surrounding countries will support them. It is a shame that we dont have that type of relationship.
Thankfully most countries just like giving us a good hiding. With the scots it is a bit deeper, because you hate us as well. Scottish people are some of the nicest funniest people i have ever met, so i wont be joining in the tit for tat hatred. I like to think i have a little bit more style than that.
The next time Scotland qualify for a tournament, i will be cheering you on, its a nicer feeling than carrying all that hate around.

Once again, we see the only thing uniting Scots is their hatred of the English. You have that, at least, to be thankful for.

Sarah number 10

What English tyranny are you referring to? Please clarify. Was it the tyranny that forced a group of greedy Scottish MPs to sign the act of union over a glass of sherry? Was it the tyranny that gave Scotland autonomy in law, education, sport and religion? That gives Scotland its own parliament when itself does not have one?

Or are you referring to British tyranny that led to colonial expansion around the globe, at the helm a great many Scotsmen, evidenced today by the Scottish community in Nova Scotia of which you are a member?

Please clarify Sarah else it might seem you are another fantasist.

Likewise I always got behind Scotland, and Scottish competitors in any sport. I was proud of them. When the love is so obviously unrequited it gets harder and harder to keep up.
