AIRLINE Virgin Atlantic has said it is interested in acquiring rival BMI amid predictions of mergers following the "open skies" deal between the EU and USA.
BMI, which operates a number routes from Edinburgh Airport, is likely to benefit from yesterday's deal, which will allow any EU carrier to fly from anywhere within the members states to the US, as it owns more slots at Heathrow than any other airline except BA.

BMI operates a number of international routes from Edinburgh Airport, including Brussels, Copenhagen and Zurich. Let's hope any takeover by Virgin won't effect these services. Virgin are far too London-centric in their outlook, and Richard Branson is only likely to be interested in Scottish airports insofar as they will feed his expanded long haul network at Heathrow. The rest of the UK will be a low priority for Virgin.

Every good business looks to reduce competition.

Branson got the West Coast Main Line and is hoping for the East Coast too. There isn't much competition there.

Stagecoach owns 49% of Virgin Trains and 35% of Citylink.

Britain needs monopolies to be successful.
