A RELIGIOUS association established to encourage more Muslims to join and stay in the police has been condemned by a race relations champion who was Scotland's first black police officer.
Dinesh Joshi, who recently retired from the Lothian and Borders force, said the new association would only serve to reinforce division within the police.

Before he retired as an inspector two years ago, Mr Joshi worked tirelessly to establish Semper Scotland, an organisation that aims to promote race equality and to support all black and minority ethnic (BME) staff, no matter what religion.

Mr Joshi, who is also the former chairman of the Edinburgh and Lothian Racial Equality Council, said: "My own concern would be that I think we are trying to set up too many organisations to deal with black issues.

"I think it is very important that there is one common organisation that addresses the needs of the black and minority ethnic community and in my opinion Semper Scotland is already doing that."

Strathclyde Police announced it was supporting the creation of Scotland's first Muslim Police Association in an attempt to tackle "Islamaphobia".

However, as Semper Scotland is open to all BME employees, questions have been asked as to why a further organisation is necessary.

"We encourage people to join because we represent everybody, all the religions," said Semper Scotland spokeswoman Sandra Deslandes-Clark.

"We were non-plussed when we found out about this, in particular because Strathclyde is the only force that thinks it is necessary."

The new Muslim Police Association at Strathclyde follows on from the high-profile launch of the National Association of Muslim Police (NAMP) earlier this year.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was at the inaugural NAMP conference, where he said he believed the organisation would help forge links between the state, police and the community.

The most recent figures, published last year, showed there were 32 ethnic minority employees working for Lothian and Borders and just under 200 across Scotland. Scotland has the fastest-growing migrant population in the UK and, last year, Lothian and Borders launched a recruitment drive aimed at attracting Eastern European officers.

When Mr Joshi first joined Lothian and Borders in the 1970s, he says he was a frequent victim of racism.

But the retired inspector believes the force has come a long way in facing up to its problems.

He added: "Individually, people cannot go to their force and say 'this is what I need', but Semper Scotland, which is recognised by all the police forces and the Scottish Government, can take the case on behalf of these individuals.

"I think that the support that is being offered by Semper Scotland is adequate.

"What needs to be done now is for officers from BME communities to engage and that's the way things will happen."

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "The formation of the association was initiated by Muslim officers within the force. The formation of the association is at a very early stage."

" reinforce division within the police"

Finally someone woth some common senses. And while your at it, get rid of all the gay billboards too.

The only thing these campaigns produce, is to highlight people as being different.

Someone in Strathclyde wants to be promoted and what better than to put on your form " I set up the first Muslim Police Association. Q- Was there a need for it?
A-Err, no but maybe one day there will be, you never know!

I agree with Mr Joshi this will create a them and us. There will also be the " I need time off (during working time of course)to go to a meeting of muslims police officers" abuse.
There is no need for this association just as there is no need for a white police officers association.
More PC touchy feely crap brought in under the guise of "helping".

perhaps they should have a jewish, left handed police asosciation. it makes as much sense as the Muslim one. would they have female Muslim police officers? would they have to wear regulation head wear or can they choose scarves? could they share a car with a male police officer?
there is a black police officer association in England (do we have one in Scotland) but if there were an association called the White Catholic/Protestant/Jedi Police Association what an outcry there would be from the PC brigade. they are polis no more no less and any subdivision is daft.

"Nonplussed" shouldn't have a hyphen, but I don't know whether to call the grammar police, the punctuation police, or the black, gay, disabled, islamophilic community police action team overwatch committee responsible for monitoring reckless use of a minus sign.

This is ridiculous. Are we going to have an Association of Heterosexual Police Officers, Association of Mormon & Jehovas Witnesses Police Officers. For goodness sake everyone is the same and should be treated the same. The U.S. tried positive discrimination in the 70's and early 80's and it back fired on them. Do we learn nothing?

#2 - You're quite right. The Christian Police Association meet in their own time and they do not have an officer dedicated full-time to their activities. That cannot be said to be true of the Gay Police Association or other certain minority representative groups. The Scottish Police Federation is the ONLY group set up in law to represent officers -the rest are special interest groups or pressure groups who cannot "represent" anybody.

PS - Wouldn't the Chief Constable of Strathclyde be better employed by addressing the real policing issues affecting his area like the fear of crime. But if he really wants to tackle discrimination in his own Force, why doesn't he look at the reason that some sections, some areas and some promotion panels are weighted heavily against Catholic officers?

It would fit CC House better of he dealt with the Asian Gang Problem in Glasgow ,something the Strathclyde Police have ignored for years for fear of being accussed of being "Racist" that is also why they Ignore the Yardy Gangs , The Bugarian Gangsters etc The Govanhill and Polloksheilds area of Glasgow are one of those No-Go Area`s that have been denied by both the Scottish Ex and UK Goverments the Police in Glasgow are a Joke as are their sidekicks you know the ones who walk about looking for old ladies and men to chin and fine for dropping their fag ends now that is a Policy that they get their teeth into anything else such as Feral Kids running riot ..You wont see a Cop till 2-3hrs after the incident ..
