IT is one of the most important purchases for any bride-to-be.
But while finding the perfect wedding dress can be a stressful, expensive and torturous process, quite what to do with it after the ceremony is another headache.

Newly-wed Jennifer Campbell is joining the growing band of women who are opting to have one last bit of fun out of their dresses instead of packing them carefully away never to be seen again.

The 27-year-old has more reason than most for wanting to take part in the "dress trashing" craze, which has swept America, after being struck down by meningitis just months before her big day.

She is using the stunt to raise money for Meningitis Trust, which helped her through her illness and recovery.

Mrs Campbell, from Kirknewton, got married to childhood sweetheart Colin just two weeks ago in a ceremony at Leith Registrars Office, followed by a reception at the Prison Officers Social Club in Longstone.

After seeing pictures of other brides taking part in "trash the dress" shoots – popular ways to destroy gowns include running into the sea or being splattered by mud – Mrs Campbell decided this was something for her.

She now plans to have some fun in her wedding dress by splashing around in the fountain in Princes Street Gardens with her three children – Leah, Eloise and Dylan.

The Ann Summers party organiser said: "I am looking forward to this more than the actual wedding because the wedding was so much stress.

"I thought being able to trash my dress would be a huge relief.

"It will give me some cracking pictures and also raise some sponsorship for the Meningitis Trust, who were fantastic with me."

Mrs Campbell spent months searching for the dress – which she bought second hand. At one point she had five dresses because she couldn't find the perfect one.

But the ivory A-line strapless gown she opted for was exactly what she wanted. She added:

"I don't see the point in just hanging it up in my wardrobe and forgetting about it so I'm going to do something a bit different."

Mrs Campbell spent five days in hospital when she contracted the disease back in January.

Although she has no major long-lasting effects, she has problems with doing mental arithmetic and also suffers from dizzy spells.

Katherine Raich, of the Meningitis Trust in Scotland said: "Jennifer's amazing fundraising provides inspiration to us all."

Good Luck Jennifer Campbell and I hope the weather is good for this event, if not, wear some thermals :)

Meningitis is a Serious Condition, which I know only to well, so any form in fund raising is well worth while for this cause.

She will probably find it is against the Park bye-laws to do that, and a Parkie will come along and nab her and her bairns. Still, she's probably already met some of the Prison Officers who'll be looking after her in Saughton.

"I thought being able to trash my dress would be a huge relief."

I do not understand young people today, with their body piercings, tattoos and peculiar musical tastes.

This seems like the ultimate in vacuous behaviour. Spend too much money on a dress for the most important day of your life - and then destroy it.

Surely there are more effective ways for even the young to raise money?

I am the woman who is trashing her dress!!! #6 firstly you will see I bought the dress 2nd hand so actually didn't spend all that much on it in the first place, and secondly I never plan to wear it again, my kids WON't wear it in 20 years time for their own weddings and i don't have the space to store it. I plan to get it soaking wet, get some great pictures and raise some money for charity then have it drycleaned and give it away to someone else who can use it. If you still think that's so wrong then I think you need to take a look at yourself.

#5 - I am in the process of gaining permission to do this, I'm not niave enough to simply go down to the fountain with a camera and jump in ffs. If they refuse permission then I will think of some other way.

Thanks everyone who is supporting me, it really means a lot and you can sponsor me at www.justgiving.com/jennieccles

Well, I am not the woman who is trashing her dress. But I owe you an apology. In the picture, you are about to cut said dress with a scissors, so perhaps you can understand my confusion. I'm 84 years old, and sometimes it's hard for me to make sense of the world.

Naturally, raising money for meningitis (well, not for meningitis, but you know what I mean) is a great thing to do, and I congratulate you on your efforts. Again, sorry for the misunderstanding ... sometimes I have mental difficulties.

Married two weeks and has three children? And, despite marrying childhood sweetheart, they are her children, not their children. Sounds like the white dress has been trashed already.

#14 your comment made me laugh ... I was just asking myself why after being with her childhood sweetheart for however many years it takes to have three children would she a) bother to get married b) wear a white (ok ivory then!) dress?

And folk would pay money for her to stand in a fountain that's not accessible to the public just because she's wearing a wedding dress - and all in the name of charity! CRAZY!!

juicyjen,

#14 and #10 - Not that it actually has anything to do with you, but it doesn't say my childhood sweetheart and I have been together all those years. people break up, and get back together or does your imagination not stretch that far. This story is about raising money for a very worthwhile cause and if you feel the need to use it to nitpick over people's lives in order to save having to look at your own then I feel sorry for you.

Possibly, if anyone making snide comments, had experienced a loved one with Meningitis as I have, they would understand the devastation of this illness and give more credit where credits due.

6...Milo darlin thats because you are from another generation...someday I will be 84 years old (45 just now)and I will have a tattoo, body piercings and still listen to peculiar music...its just the way of the world and nothing to be worried about...you seem to be doing fine for a mature bloke...

21...JuicyJen...there are always torn faced curmudgeons on this forum...I have my turn regularly...so just ignore them...its your day...its your call....personally I think you should bungee jump with the dress, and veil on.........

21 It was quite clear from the article to me and most others that the sweetheartedness had not been monogynously continuous from childhood to wedding day.

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but "I plan to get it soaking wet... then have it drycleaned and give it away to someone else who can use it" hardly sounds like trashing it. Someone has been doing a bit of misrepresentation here.

I guess in Scotland today the symbolism behind the wearing of a white dress to get married in is lost on the general populace.
21

juicyjen,

16/07/2008 19:33:26
#26, your razor sharp intelligence astounds me.

#28 - if you actually read up on 'trashing the dress' the empahsis is not placed on completely ruining the dress but believe me, if that's what it took to raise some money then I would do it. However if all i am going to be doing is getting it soaked and muddy then it makes sense to allow someone else to get a use out of it too.

#29 - Have i suddenly become the only non virgin in Scotland to get married in an ivory dress?? I don't think so. it doesn't bother me so I don't see why it should bother you. this isn't about the colour of the dress I am wearing and I seriously hope you cynics and idiots never have to suffer what I did as you would never be able to cope with such small minds.
22

Truthman,

Washington, DC 16/07/2008 20:58:16
Let's stop all this. Consider Mr. Campbell; if his charges at Saughton were reading all this, it might expose him to considerable disrespect.
23

Horrible Cankers at the Cyber Shebeen,

16/07/2008 21:28:27
29..Actually...here...over in Britain...the 'White dress' has come to signify the marriage robe of the bride and not symbolise that ancient ridiculous demand that the bride be of the virginal variety....however if you...over in the USA.... wish to remain medieval..
then thats your problem...but we have moved on and dont expect women to deny themselves a sex life and children before marriage....its 2008 duckie.....2008..

Doggonedude,

I'll help you trash it Jennifer, putting paw prints all over it love, woof!

A question for 32. Just who helps these women having children before/without marriage pay for those children until they are 16? Women do not earn as much as men generally and women with children are more likely to be on welfare (the "social" or "dole" to you guys). Social benefits paid to women with children come out of other people's taxes, you know. So am I to understand that in Scotland today everyone thinks it is just hunkydory for women to go off having children? And no one cares that the taxpayers are paying to help them out?
26

juicyjen,

17/07/2008 17:38:38
#34 I actually work a full time and a part time job so I am not on the 'dole' or the social andI work damned hard to make sure my kids have everything they need. My daughters' dad also works hard and is not an 'absent father'.

I just wish those of you who are nitpicking over my life would get one of your own and understand that i am trying to raise awareness of meningitis and the devastating effects it can have on people.

Oh and for the record, we had the reception at the prison officer's club - my husband is not a prison officer.
