A VAN fitted with CCTV cameras will patrol the Capital to catch dog owners letting their pets foul the streets.
The council vehicle will be scouring notorious areas of north Edinburgh and Leith over the next ten weeks.

With the help of concerned residents, environmental wardens have compiled a list of worst-affected areas such as Granton, Muirhouse, Pilton and Drylaw.

Owners caught not collecting dog muck will be given a £60 on-the-spot fine – which could rise to £500 and a criminal record if it is not paid.

Councillor Norman Work, vice convener of health, social care and housing, said: "Dog fouling has been raised as a particular area of concern by residents in parts of north Edinburgh.

"Their enforcement work will be supported by the use of mobile CCTV to assist with surveillance of particular problem areas.

"The majority of dog owners recognise that dog fouling is both unsightly and poses a health hazard. However, our environmental wardens will not hesitate to take action against persistent offenders to ensure that people abide by their responsibility to pick up after their pets."

Environmental wardens will team up with local community police officers, and the Forth Neighbourhood Partnership has helped identify key areas where dog walkers don't abide by the law.

Forth councillor Allan Jackson said it was a chance to collect records of all the worst areas and have them addressed.

He said: "This is obviously a problem that has gone on for years and we always get letters and e-mails about problem areas, streets and parks.

"We've now passed them all on to the council and during this purge they can target these places.

"I sincerely hope this makes a difference because it's an extremely unpleasant thing if it's on your shoes, in your car and then in your house. There are also potential health issues."

Parts of Leith, such as Great Junction Street, will also be monitored, and the council said it is happy to receive more input from residents.

Royston/Wardieburn Community Council secretary Joan Turner said: "It's a big problem in this area and everyone's talking about it. Hopefully this will make a difference."

Secretary of West Pilton/West Granton Community Council George Taylor said: "It's something we receive a lot of complaints about and clearly needs to be clamped down on, not just in this area but probably the whole of the city.

"This is definitely good news and I'm glad it's taking place. I can see both sides of the story. If I had a dog, I wouldn't want to be following it about with a plastic bag, but then if you have kids playing and there's dog muck everywhere it's not on."

Anyone wanting to report instances of dog fouling should phone the 24-hour antisocial behaviour hotline on 0131-529 7050.

Long overdue.
Ideally, the owners' noses would be rubbed-into the poo in question as well.

Great news, now maybe we can walk the pavements without slipping in the Poo,all we need now is cyclists to go on the road.

These priorities are skewed.

They should concentrate MORE on capturing crimes on CCTV rather than the dogmuck that seems to be everywhere in your capital city.

It IS a disgrace for dogowners not to "poop and scoop' as we call it here and there are hefty fines also here.

It seems that Big Brother will have even more cameras installed to survey criminal dog owners and REAL criminals.

And at WHAT exorbitant cost to the taxpayers?

These vans should simply be community service vehicles.

Why just watch poo when you can watch for all things anti social.

#2. Alex no I think I'd like Cyclists to stop at red lights and be given spot fines for not having lights on their bikes and helmets! The Student areas of Edinburgh are rife with non-edinburgh young adults just not observing cycle safety! and back to Dog Poo... The back streets of Dalry are minging! name and shame the owners!! disgusting.

And what happens if the council spies happen to see anti-social behaviour whilst on their rounds? Will they be so quick to deal with this? Fat chance!

The whole idea of collecting dog muck is disgusting.

This was never a problem in years gone by. Why is it a problem now? Because people are too stupid to watch where they are going. That's why.

Mind you, I witnessed the height of stupidity the other day when some dim-witted old bat led her dog onto the ROAD to have a cr4p, straight into the middle of the traffic flow, causing pandemonium whilst everyone swerved to avoid it.

Copy New York City - make it against the law to let dogs off the leash anywhere except your own home or in designated fenced-off dog-walking areas in local parks. Solves all the problems. No-one dares to let their dogs run free on the streets because the wardens will get ya!

What I find strange, is that the majority of dog owners who live near me , find it alright to walk their dogs to the grass outside my home to let their dogs s**t but completely ignore the grass areas closer to their own homes. Says it all I think.

What good is this? I complained about a certain person driving to a spot, letting his dog crap and driving away. I gave the wardens his reg number and the stair where he lives. They left a message on his answer machine, and claimed that unless they see him do it there is nothing they can do!!

A bit arcane, I know, but I think the law is silent on animals doing it in the road, (as opposed to footpaths)

I think it's to do with horses, who can do it wherever they feel like it. Bless them.

A panicked man approached a van fitted with CCTV equiptment...'There is a crime in progress just over there.'

The reply from the van, '3rd time we've filmed that merle, got enough evidence now to keep it off the streets for good. Almost done here, if you can't wait call dispatch.'

Poo

I always think it's amazing that horses can poo and walk at the same time. I couldn't do that.

Well I have, but I,d rather not talk about it.

Your third paragraph:

Do you really have problems with dogowners pooping and scooping in Canada?

Over here it's the dogs that are the problem.

Went to Crammond at the weekend with the kids, came back with bikes and shoes covered with dog-sh1t. How ignorant do you have to be to leave your dog's crap in any area, but particularly on a promenade. I've got a dog, she craps, I pick it up with a plastic bag - easy and I knew I'd have to do this before getting her - no excuse, everyone knows it's the law; if you can't scoop the poop you should have the sh1t fined out of you and your dog taken away - ignorant scumbags!!

PS - the vans should cover all anti-social behaviour they see while sitting there; shouldn't just be waiting for ignorant dog-owners.

About time something was done. Don't forget the Gyle Park area. Those residents are the worst culprits especially an old diddy who lives opposite and gets a gathering of residents and dogs together before football games ... she thinks she owns the park.

paul the binman,

Its great how they can catch a dog crapping but they can't catch the buliders loading the street bins with their waste.Thats why you members of the public have to put your bags on the street next to the bin.So next time you get a cheap job done by a cowboy, add to the bill the cost on your council tax for the free service the builders are all getting.
