SIR John Major, the former Prime Minister, said plans to hold terrorism suspects without charge for 42 days will boost terrorist recruitment.
He also said the Labour government's response to terrorism had eroded civil liberties and that the invasion of Iraq had damaged Britain's reputation overseas.

His comments are a further blow to the Government's efforts to win support for the 42-day increase ahead of a crucial vote in the Commons next week.

The criticism comes after the joint committee on human rights said it remained opposed to the extension, despite a series of concessions outlined by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith in a last-ditch bid to head off a highly-damaging Labour backbench revolt.

In one of his fiercest attacks on Labour since he was defeated in the general election in 1997, Sir John described the case for detaining terrorism suspects for 42 days without charge as bogus and little more than scaremongering.

Without the 42 day detension how is labour meant to use the anti terrorist laws fully to stop a labour party member pensioner heckling the next labour party conference.

If this law had been in place then the pensioner could have been arrested in advance and held using the anti terrorist laws to prevent such a situation occuring again.

the previous anti terror laws were shown to be too weak as the police were only allowed to arrest this pensioner for speaking out at the labour conference, using terrorist laws after the pensioner spoke his mind.

writes his biased Unionist remarks on the SNP Government and allows no response, in the so called SCOTSMAN (ha,ha,ha.)All this amounts to is, ONE persons opinion among MILLIONS!!

Civil Liberties are for the public not the Islamist scum that plague or shores. The worse the law gets the less they are likely to base their entire european network in the UK where they feel protected.

My only concern is that they need to define the actions that would generate such a detention and it must be for attempting to cause the death of people and not used by the control freak labour government to control the people.
