CURRENT Scottish Rugby president Jim Stevenson is campaigning for a second term at next week's annual meeting on a platform of a third professional team being introduced and additional help for traditional clubs.
At the same time, rival candidate Finlay Calder, whose manifesto-style CV is also published on the governing body's web-site, insists Ireland offers the ideal role model for the game in Scotland and urges emulating their standards.

A third candid
ate, Jim Gracie, highlights more than 40 years' involvement in rugby from player to administrator.

In a comprehensive submission president Stevenson says he wants to "review the union's expenditure ... to get more money into the rugby end" and "maximise scarce club finances by developing additional income and savings".

And Stevenson insists there is a need to "alter the focus to better support the club rugby scene".

Such remarks come on a day when former International Board President Syd Millar, of Ireland, is warning of dire consequences for club rugby unless action is taken. Former Lions player and manager Millar, now president of Ballymena, is quoted in the Belfast Telegraph, saying: "There is great concern with regards to the future of the club game at its highest level. It continues to be downgraded.

"If the current brand continues to be diminished, sponsors, supporters and volunteers will walk away. Young players learn by playing with and against experienced players, not sitting on benches.

"We have got an imbalance in our rugby and this needs to be corrected or else we will pay dearly in the future."

In the same article Millar hails the achievements of Ireland winning the grand slam, Leinster the Heineken European Cup and Munster the Celtic League – something which would resonate with ex-Scotland and Lions captain, Finlay Calder, who says: "Ireland have set the highest of standards to which we must aspire both on and off the field. We have some catching up to do and it will not be easy but if we all pull together from the schools all the way through the clubs, the referees, the supporters and the executive then it can and will be done."

It is surprising to read that Jim Stevenson in his campaign to be re elected president is recommending a 3rd pro side, which surely flies in the face of McKie's plans. Hopefully this is genuine and not just waffle. When Andy Irvine became president his vision for pro rugby was 4 teams, but by the time his stint was over he had meekly fallen in line with the rest of the brown nose jobs and the Borders were no more. Maybe Stevenson will fight for what he believes in, and if he could get the support of Andy Robinson, well, who knows.

Get someone who has balls not the likes of the previous incumbants!! As we have again no scots in a lions test team the SRU needs to get the game by the balls and work with Andy and his team to get us winning so we cant be left behind.Get rid of McKie as he is just a waste of space.

I'd vote for Calder. I reckon that he, unlike the vast majority of our players (Hines excluded) might take exception to Mckie's penny-piching and lamp him. Or better yet, sack him. I'd buy a ticket for that!

McKie is a good accountant, but I suspect he knows more about tennis than rugby! Following the Irish model would be a good trick if it can be done, but they have their "four proud provinces" as against two (Edinburgh and Glasgow) and two halves maybe (Borders and Aberdeen) in Scotland. In view of this I remain convinced that London Scottish is a key element in Scottish rugby, and indeed has been from time immemorial. The SRU must make sure that it is fostered and encouraged in every way possible.

At last, someone who is not dazzled by a former rugby icon & who goes beyond the veneer of what the candidates say.

This shows up Calder as being ill-informed & therefore liable to say the wrong things at precisely the wrong times.

He discounts Gracie as a has-been administrator & identifies that Jim Stevenson has shown not only great perception & insight but also someone who is willing to state a case when it badly needs saying.

Syd Millar knows more about how rugby is run than any former player or minute taker could ever know.

We need the right man as President for the conditions that prevail at the time. We don't just need another blazer who knows how to shake hands with dignitaries, we need someone who will represent the game of Rugby in its entirety - players, coaches, volunteers at every level.

Jim Stevenson is patently that man!
