A SECOND-HALF goal from Eggert Jonsson was enough to bring Hearts' winless SPL run to an end at Love Street this afternoon.

The Icelander sent a glancing header past Mark Howard with just 11 minutes remaining in Paisley to record the Tynecastle side's first win since the end of September.

The Jambos had struggled to find their rhythm during the early stages of the
match and lost Saul Mikoliunas to injury in the first half before being reduced to ten men when Michael Stewart was shown a straight red card for a tangle with Saints' Hugh Murray.

Saints had the bect of the clear-cut chances but the Jambos hit them with the classic sucker punch as time ticked away.

Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo found out this week that Deividas Cesnauskis will be ruled out for around a month with a tear to his left thigh muscle but he was boosted by the return to the first-team squad of Robbie Neilson and David Obua, although both had to settle for a place on the bench.

The home side enjoyed the best of the early chances, without managing to create enough danger to bag the opener.

With eight minutes gone Billy Mehmet managed to play the ball off Jason Thompson for a corner and when Steven Robb whipped it in from the right, Will Haining rose to meet it but could only send his header over the bar.

They had another chance when Franco Mirando was fouled by Mikoliunas on the left. Robb was invovled again, swining the ball deep into the box but this time Ruben Palazuelos was on hand to head it clear.

Again Saints pushed forward and looked set to score when Robb and Mehmet combined to tee up Gary Mason, who had raced in at the far side but the former Dunfermline man stumbled and allowed the Jambos to clear their lines.

At the other end Hearts were awarded a free-kick when Mikoliunas looked to be body-checked out wide on the right of the pitch. Aguiar took it, using his right foot to bend it deep into the danger area but Saints keeper Mark Howard got one hand to is and pushed it wide of the goal and Mehmet was there to thump it away up the park.

Mikoliunas attempted a shot with just over 20 minutes gone but took a heavy knock on his right knee in the priocess when John Potter tried to intervene.

After a few minutes' treatment the Lithuanian resumed play but was clearly struggling to shake off the problem and Laszlo took the decision to bring on Neilson to replace him.

Saints almost took the lead in 35 minutes when Franco Miranda charged in on goal and unleashed a fierce effort from 25 yards that swerved just wide at the last minute with Janos Balgoh struggling to get across his goal in time.

Hearts were reduced to ten men five minutes before the break when Stewart was sent for an early bath after a clash with Saints' Murray.

The two were tangled up together off the ball as they raced towards the home side's goal and in frustration Stewart appeared to push the Love Street player. While the crowd reacted furiously, referee Mike McCurry didn't see a thing but the fourth official Bobby Madden called hinm over a his version of event lead to Stewart being shown a straight red.

Minutes later Murray fed Miranda down the right and his ball across goal was sent over the bar by the head of Robb again.

Just after the restart Saints came close again when Andy Dorman, a half-time sub for Garry Brady, fed Dennis Wyness and when he poked the ball through for Mahmet in the box it looked like a goal was a certainty but he somehow sent it just inches wide of Balogh's left-hand post.

With just over an hour gone Aguiar tried his luck with a shot from long range but he curled it just over the crossbar.

The Jambos were awarded a free kick on the right when Neilson was tripped about 12 yards from the goal-line and it proved to be a vital award. Andrew Driver, who had been pretty much anonymous in the preceding 78 minutes, swung in a beautiful free-kick which was just the right height for Eggert Jonsson, who got the slightest of touches on the ball with his head to send it into the net and bring the Tynecastle side's winless run to an end.

Share your delight but for most of today's match we were no-where near a top 4 side. Not by a long way (and yes I know we are currently sitting 4th). Honestly, St Mirren were p'sh. And for me the jury is still out on Csaba. Everyone could quite clearly see that Nade was blowing out his botty for a long time before a change was eventually made. We were lucky that his inaction did not cost us dear. However, despite the best efforts of Mike McCurry and his bionic eyed 4th official, Hearts spirit shone through and the result was outstanding. And the final word for Robbie - great shift. Glad too see this honest grafter back.

" I just can't help from singing the blues,
When Jam Tarts win and Hibees lose,
Oh Jam Tarts,
You got me singing the blues"

Won't go on a green thread 'cos it's not fair.

However, has anyone ever thought that Shabba plays one up because he knows he hasn't got two to play. He seems to be fairly astute, and when I heard the team today I was surprised, but he's been vindicated.

Good to see Robbie back, I've never been a detractor of him, and an interesting pairing at centre back today.

We're not out of the woods but at least we can see through the trees now.

Mikey, calm down dear, it's only a game.

Ayrshire. #3 You have to remember we were down to 10 men. I totally agree with csaba playing with 1 up front caus he aint got a choice, the rest of the strikers are mince. Midfield is Hearts strong point. Hopefully, & i think this will be the case that when tullberg is fit, Csaba may tinker with a striking partner for him. Of course the jurys out on him, hes just started. The jurys out on me at my work, I started two months ago, but im confident in my ability & im sure he is too. See you in Europe next season for some strong continental lager. MARK THESE WORDS.

good result - top man eggy....ok, here comes the paranoid bit. does anyone else find themselves asking how referees, referee's assistants, fourth officials, uefa, the world press, the sfa, the fbi and the cia all seem able to get involved in making decisions/having irrational opinions involving hearts that they all miraculously seem to miss in other games/incidents involving other teams....no? this goes back a long time and i'm showing my age here, but if memory serves, i'm pretty sure john robertson was the first player in scotland to be suspended based on the use of video evidence about 15 years ago after a game with celtic....remember the ibrox 4, miko and his 8 game ban....brellier's ear-ring, fysass' sending off, to mention but a few....they're still doing it now....maybe it's just me...got to go, i thinks someones monitoring this post....shhh, what was that..

I share your paranoia. I even thought the hated 4th official deliberately showed his '5 mins of extra time' board to the Hearts end for at least three times longer than any other end. Yep, I'm losing it.......must seek help.

A lucky draw or a lucky win is great !!!

but against teams like ict or falkirk or st mirren !!!

The weegie twins need - seperating - and im quite happy for any team in edinburgh to do that !!

The league is quite tight - except for the weegie ones - aint that always been the case ???

#18 ayrshire....nice to know i'm not all alone in my 'everyone hates us' beliefs...you were there today, did you see the kick from stewart?...remarkable that the 4th official did eh?.... he missed caldwell's handball and the fact zaliuks' foul was outside the box last week though...still waiting on the 4th official to intervene for barry fergusson's two-handed ball control in last season's semi too....shhh they're listening in...

Sorry for the delay, the X factor took over my life momentarily. Yes, I did see the Stewart kick - he and Murray had a go at each other when Stewart was surging forward, and Stewart definitely had a wee go at him at the end of it. There was no reaction from from any of the on-field officials and the game was going on as normal until the intervention from the 4th official after about 3 minutes, which was gobsmacking. You just could not see that happening under any circumstances at certain other clubs could you? Ok, I'm now going to hide behind the net curtains and stock up on spare water......

Anyone at the game tell me if the additional minutes of play was justified? Our game was one of the last to finnish in the whole of the UK.

There was 4 mins extra in the 1st half, probably due to a bad tackle on Miko, then 5 mins in the 2nd half which must have been due to the bad knock Robbie took. It was a nailbiter, that's for sure.

#28 Worst team at tynecastle in 25 - 30 Years ? So you never had a season ticket for the tommy mclean era then ? Were playing S*ITE & were 4th. To be honest, the worst team i have seen at tynecastle in the last 20 odd years was hibs when De Vries scored 4 in a 5-1 win. Or when burley destroyed yez 4-0. Of course that was all since the days of your 6-2 name tag. Oh , dont forget the 4-0 at hampden. These are the reasons your all gibbering S*ITE about admin, admin, admin, admin. Caus its all you got on us, but its not happening Baw bag so geeup!

Kari out due to calf blood clot, and kingston due to apparently being unfit.

Wondering if any truth that him and Berra are still not seeing eye to eye.

Still good result today what we badly needed, some strikers in Jan and I can see a top 4 finish.

Not gonna get into decisions by refs ect, but we need to keep control of tempers on the park from what i gather he did lash out, don't want a another fine at end of season.
