Mixu vows to learn lessons from thrashing

AS if a 90-minute going over by Barcelona wasn't painful enough, Mixu Paatelainen's players will find themselves tortured time and again as they take in the lessons dished out in this masterclass from the Spanish maestros.
While it might be easier for Paatelainen to simply shrug his shoulders and attempt to dismiss a six goal hammering as not entirely unexpected given the financial chasm which separates the respective clubs, such an approach would be to ignore the pri
mary objective of Hibs agreeing to this match in the first place.

As in accepting entry to the InterToto Cup and the trials and tribulations posed by Swedish outfit IF Elfsborg, Paatelainen approached the formidable task of confronting a side boasting an array of stars which would be the envy of all but a few clubs around the world with pragmatism. Yes, the immediate results may not prove as palatable as the Easter Road support would like, but, in his estimation, the long-term benefits promise a greater reward and to that end his players will today – and no doubt over the course of the next few days – be treated to re-run after re-run, not through any sadistic intent but the desire to impart just what went wrong and how it can be prevented in future.

Only time will tell, of course, and in the chastening few hours following what, in anyone's language, was a real chasing for Hibs, there will be many fans who will today be questioning the wisdom of what has certainly been a different approach to pre-season.

Today, however, Paatelainen remained as firm in his conviction as he was when he gave the programme of the past few weeks the green light although, as he admitted, the first of Barca's goals caused him as much pain as the sixth. And, if he were to be honest, Hibs got off lightly with Argentine star Lionel Messi teasing and tormenting to the extent they were four down with barely 27 minutes on the clock.

As hard as it was to take, Paatelainen, like the majority of the 23,390 crowd scattered around the vast acres of Murrayfield, could do little but applaud the mesmerising display from Barcelona in what was new coach Pep Guardiola's first match in charge of the Catalan giants.

Such was their performance it was hard to remember that Barca are barely 12 days into their own pre-season preparations, the extended period Hibs have "enjoyed" counting for little as the Spaniards threatened to run riot as their whirlwind start left Paatelainen's players clearly shell-shocked.

Although Hibs looked like rabbits caught in the headlights, Paatelainen insisted his own side's shortcomings shouldn't distract from Barcelona's performance as they shook off the loss of Ronaldinho and Deco with a display which quickly saw any partisan feelings disappear in favour of an appreciation of a style of football which the Edinburgh club have been associated – only on a much higher plane.

He said: "In the first half we should have defended better, some of their goals should have been avoided. Our concentration should have been better, we should have kept our shape better and we should have got closer to their players."

By then, however, the damage was done, a slack clearance from Chris Hogg rifled home by Eidur Gudjohnsen after only five minutes before Messi cut inside Rob Jones and drilled a shot in off the far post.

As entrancing as Messi was, it was hard not to feel sorry for Paul Hanlon who was left to face the trickery of a player not much older than his 18 years, the youngster involved again as an intricate move led to Gudjohnsen's shot being deflected past the helpless Andy McNeil for No.3.

Barcelona's ability to use every blade of the Murrayfield pitch pulled Hibs all over the place, the Spaniards quickly shifting the emphasis of attack from side to side, their fourth goal coming as Messi picked out the unmarked Pedro Rodriguez who sliced inside David van Zanten before dispatching yet another inch-perfect shot past McNeil.

Paatelainen said: "I was disappointed, but we knew what we were up against, we knew our defence was going to be under a lot of pressure.

"But you cannot take anything away from them, they are quality players. They are an absolutely fantastic side, their movement, passing, sharpness and finishing was all first-class. Messi is a fantastic player when you watch on TV, against your side he is a pain. He's a tremendous player, but he is not the only one."

And that point was underlined by one glance at Barca's bench, containing the likes of new signing Alexander Hleb, Yaya Toure, Samuel Eto'o and 17-year-old sensation Bojan Krkic – and that's before you even mention Euro 208 heroes Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, all rested for this encounter.

Little surprise then, that Barca, continued in similar vein after the interval, Bojan rifling home after Jeffren Suarez had blocked a Jones clearance before Yaya Toure completed the rout with more than 20 minutes remaining.

Hibs chances were few and far between, Alan O'Brien, who again impressed in flashes, too short with a low cross for Steven Fletcher who later stung the palms of substitute goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto before hammering over from eight yards.

Even a consolation goal would have taken nothing away from Barcelona, leaving Paatelainen's players to head home, lick their wounds and seek to return in time for the start of the new SPL season on August 9 to show such a doing has had no effect on confidence.

Paatelainen had few doubts, saying: "On their day Barcelona are one of the best sides in the world. We got a real lesson, that's for sure but we will analyse it. We'll sit down with the players and look at it.

"There were mistakes we cannot afford to repeat, it's important we keep our shape and stay organised. We lost our shape and concentration. Because of their passing and movement we got cut up a bit. It's all about experience. Experienced players don't get fazed but all credit to our boys, they did tremendously well to battle on because it is hard being four down in 27 minutes. They showed a lot of courage.

"But I won't just shrug my shoulders. I was gutted when we lost the first goal and gutted with the sixth. Every goal is painful. It was very lonely and painful to stand our there and try to support the boys because they put a lot of effort in."

Barcelona: Valdes (Pinto 46), Corcoles, Marquez (Caceres 46), Pique, Alves (Abraham 46), Vazquez (Crosas 30, Keita 66), Pedro (Hleb 66), Messi (Jeffren 46), Sergio (Toure 46), Gudjohnsen (Eto'o 66), Henry (Bojan 46).

Hibs: McNeil (Grof 82), Van Zanten, Hogg (Canning 74), Jones, Hanlon, Murray (Thicot 46), Stevenson (Chisholm 46), Shiels (Rankin 74), O'Brien (Cropley 82), Fletcher (Morais 66), Nish.

That was the first "game" for Barca so what happened to the excuses that the hobos gave for the reasons for the capitulation to Elfsborg.

Face it the hobos are a backwater club punching well above their true level (1st division) but i feel when Hamilton get a grip then it's back down for the hobos. Will miss the derbies at first haha!!

Bit of an embarrassment all round. Half full stadium and a half-baked effort from Hibs who looked completely out of their depth. Just as well Barca took their foot off the gas - or it could have been a cricket score. Can't really see what this added to Hibs pre-season preparations. Four games, Goals for 0, goals against 10 and a humiliation in front of the biggest crowd that they are likely to see this season.

So you are saying you'd be happy watching your team get stuffed 6 nil week in week out?! It would also seem that the majority of your support don't have the same feelings as they think it was a complete waste of time and nothing was learned!!!

barca will take 6 of teams in there own league this season so whats the big deal? of course we're out of our depth! some of they're players earn more in a week than our players make in a year! we were always gonna get pasted, mixu knew that but how can you deny your players a game against players they'll never get the chance to play against domestically?

If the Hibs board had a little bit more ambition about them a while ago, and hadnt sold all your top players and replaced them with garbage, then you might well have had a crack at them a few times, cause you might well have finished 2nd or maybe even better in the league and had a crack at CL football.

14# i totally agree,i actually said the same thing to my brother last night.imagine we had mowbrays team,it would have been brilliant to watch the best hibs team in years have a crack at one of the best teams in the world, not for one minute saying we would beat them but its safe to say it would have been a better game to watch...for hibs fans anyway.and yes our board has zero ambition.

"Half full stadium"

Don't you mean LESS than half full stadium? Methinks you are being a touch generous, 10 000 seats too generous for the stadium to be HALF full.

I had such a laugh last night. Hibs then Labour, both it seems in decline.

LOL, my sides, I am still laughing now!

I agree with comments above, the hibs board are a disgrace, they need to get real about the type of manager we need and the amount of money needed for investment in the team. we have went steaming downhill since mogga left, our best manager in years. it's mindnumbing the players we have lost. I do fear for the future at easter road.

Will you accept the answer - "more than you"

I think that is accurate and fair.

Bearing in mind we easily got more people at Hearts vs Siroki Brijeg than Hibs got vs Barca.

The fact is that Hearts had exsily more than double the crowd when they faced Barca.

This could be because:

a) Hearts have more fans
b) Hearts have better marketing
c) It was at the weekend
d) The novelty factor has worn off
e) Barca lost several of their biggest stars
f) Hibs have not scored even a single goal in pre season

Either way, Hearts are not the subject, it was not us losing credability last night, it had nothing to do with us. It cannot be denied that Hearts vs Barcalona last year was a better spectacle, a closer game and was attended by more than double the amount of fans.

What an embarrassment. The Scottish football community will be (are already!!) creasing themselves laughing, and quite right. The very least you should do when facing teams who are clearly better than you is to set yourself up properly. This season is looking like a disaster already and there's no way Mixu should even attempt to dress it up. I think I'll pop down to Ladbrokes and see what odds I can get on him being sacked this season. Today's ridicule is well-deserved, and any Hibby not prepared to take it on the chin is a tube. Ready for Killie on the 9th?? Aye, right!

I think the headline says it all, Mixu must be getting his scrip from the labour spindoctors as it's preety much as big a load of bull as they are coming out with.
Its appears to me that he is completely out of his depth and could be a bigger disaster than Collins.
If Petrie had any credibility he would have gone for Yogi but he obviously is letting his personal feelings for Hughes get in the way of his management decisions.
The board must also shoulder the bulk of the blame as it were they who appointed Mixu and have also failed to given the backing and the funding that then team so badly needs, this is shaping up to be a long hard season for the green side of the city.

Having been at the game last night l`ve got to agree with the comments from most Hibs fans that we are in for a very long painful season, if Mixu thinks alls well with the team he is living on a differant planet from me.

Fletcher has been terrible for months now, he had an open goal last night and still couldn`t put the ball into the net, everybody knows that he has to get the ball to his left leg as he is hopeless with his right foot.......Benji is by far a more skillful player who can score with both feet plus his touch is the best in our team of huddies.

McNiel is just useless along with the rest of the midgets that play for us ( not including Zimmamia )if Mixu has a problem with Benji then tell the fans what it is.

Mixu has no chance at Hibs I have to say.

His inexperience is now laid bare for all to see but more importantly the lack of support from the board is now even more glaringly obvious....

Time to go Rod & STF, go now before all the good work you did do is washed away on a tide of resentment because you've condemend the club back to the dark days of mid table (or worse) mediocrity...

increase the capacity to 22,000? Your having a laugh guys, if the pre season so far is anything to gon you'll be lucky to have 12,000 coming through the gates on a regular basis.

Bin the East Stand ploy and put the money into the team!! I'm happy to continue sitting in that stand for the time being if the team is imprved by the money you could put into it instead of trying to make the club look like the most finacialy viable thing since the chancellor told us all that the Northern Rock was in good hands....

The decline isnt recent but the club lived on the strings & remnants of the team that Mowbray built. Now all of them are gone and the club is wealthy but the team is one of the worst I have ever seen in recent years.

However for a lot of Hibby's theres this misplaced pride in remaining blindly loyal and thinking "they'll get it right"..... Last season was a warning, but for a very good start we could have been in real trouble...

This coming season looks as bleak as a nuclear winter IMO.

If it wasnt for Farmer & Petrie we may not even hanve a club to support but thats historry now and they've earned a rightful place in Hibs history books as "good guys", its just a shame that whats about to happen is that they (especially Petrie) will be barracked and hounded out of Easter Road as the team declines and falls down the league, we wont get relegated or anything but I con honestly see us finishing 8th or worse....

They dont even need to plough millions in to ensure third place next season, just a reasonable wage structure increase and maybe the best part of a mil for fees.... I think we could stretch to this....

Besides surely a club tht is finishing third in its countries top league with all the fcilities and pretty bank balance that we have would be even more of a sellable asset than one which is mired min the bottom places of that same league would it not?

Or am I just being daft for thinking that?

Hence the reason you go on about the hibs all the time .Takes your mind of the reality of your disastrous last 2 years and the distinct possibility that your future is in doubt.
The debt can never be repaid , it will only carry on getting bigger until Vlad gets bored, realises that its a sinking ship and the old firm will always be the only real big teams here and that you lot are grunts like the rest of us .
