Mixu plays down Riordan return rumours

Published Date: 29 August 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today played down growing speculation that Derek Riordan is poised to make a sensational return to Easter Road.

Signed by Celtic for £170,000 two years ago, Riordan has found himself ostracised by Hoops manager Gordon Strachan to the point he can barely get a game for the reserves and has been training with the under-19 squad.

Although 25-year-old Riordan is now into the final season of his contract Celtic, having refused a bid from Burnley which would ultimately have netted them £800,000, are determined to secure a fee and have resisted moves to take him on loan.

Despite his colourful background – Riordan has been banned from every nightclub in Edinburgh – many Hibs fans are desperate to see a player who scored 64 goals in 164 games back in their green-and-white shirt. Capital rivals Hearts are also said to be interested in Riordan should Celtic be prepared to release him and Paatelainen added to the speculation when he said: "I like Deek, he is a fantastic footballer, and he is a goalscorer, who did very well for Hibs when he was here.
"He is a Hibs fan, everyone knows that, but he is a Celtic player at this moment in time so I can't really go too much into that. But I like goalscorers, every manager likes goalscorers."

Today, however, Paatelainen moved to clarify his remarks, insisting that while he had responded to a question about Riordan, he was talking in more general terms.
He said: "I'm in the market for any striker who scores goals, that was my message, nothing else. I also like David Villa (the Spanish international forward] but that's not going to happen."

Paatelainen has already added French hitman Steve Pinau on loan from Italian Serie A outfit to his squad but hopes to further strengthen his strikeforce before Monday night's transfer deadline after watching his side create and miss numerous chances as they tumbled out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at the hands of Morton.

Colin Nish, who is expected to recover from a "dead leg" sustained during Tuesday's defeat, is the club's top scorer with three goals while Scotland forward Steven Fletcher has yet to get off the mark.

But today Paatelainen backed the 21-year-old to break his duck sooner rather than later, saying: "I'd rather have him scoring, but I have no worries. He had a tremendous game against Morton, his movement, his work-rate, getting into the right positions.

"All he needs is a tap-in and he will be up and running because he is a finisher although at the moment it is not happening for him."
Paatelainen will give both Rob Jones and Alan O'Brien until the last minute before deciding if they are fit enough to face Motherwell tomorrow.

Not sure about this one, he obviously wants more money than we offered and is desperate to get away from the ginger one, but just how much can we pay him? would love it if he came back but the voices in my head tell me its a non starter.

Don`t get me wrong, but I reckon the performace problems at Hibs lie more in midfield and of course between the sticks. Fletcher will inevitable score goals and perhaps Pinau will turn out positively, who knows. It`s unacceptable that Hibs have not addressed the Goalkeeping issue and everyman and his dug can see the frailties of our non-competitive midfield. Riordan is undoubtably a proven striker but he comes with baggage. His social behaviour is irrelevant, it`s his lazy approach to the game that doesn`t sit well with both fellow players and coaching/management teams alike. I`d take Riordan but I remain convinced we have other priorities.

hmmm this everton jambo fellow

seems to imply all hibees are on the dole and all jambos are rolling in wealth

while i've got sir tom farmer pegged as a hibee (not too difficult that one) and he's a regular in the sunday times rich list, i'm still trying to think of a jambo who would come close ?

maybe our evertonian chum has got his peg-sellers mixed up...though if he's stuck I hear there are a lovely couple of caravans available for rent in Wester Hailes, Oxgangs, Stenhouse & Sighthill at present. Right in the "heart" of Jamboland.

High quality discussion on here today.

Hibs would do well to get Riordan, but I'm doubtful if the finance is there.
Celtic turned down numerous offers from 500k to 800k from clubs out-with Scotland. Why would Celtic sell/loan him to rivals for nothing?

This could prove to be a source of embarrassment to many on these threads.

Hearts want him, Hibs want him, both sets of fans are saying little about him through fear of looking stupid once their respective club signs him (or doesn't).

It will be interesting to see your views if he signs for Hearts.

Whether he is a proven goalscorer or not... He is a drug dealing ned from Muirhouse, he is a thug who cowers behind his cousins and other inbred relatives.

To take this little tw&t back would be a huge mistake, a massive backwards step for hibs.

If the answer is no then would you do us all a favour and tell him to p_ss off. Coming from a Jambo he might listen, coming from any Hibby just appears to make him think he's actually funny!!

I think you have to give everton-jambo a ton of credit the way he is handling the pressures of life.

Its no easy living in a one bedroom council flat with you're mum,, hoping to get to the match this weekend,, but waiting for the dole check to come in,, then adding up how many coppers he will get for returning empty bottles.

Worst part is the Rental company that owns his computer are going to repossess for none payment this month.

Give the lad credit he has a lot of pressure on his wee shoulders.

Riordan has a clause in his contract that pays a ''loyalty bonus'' if he is still at Celtic at the end of his contract.

Hence Celtic's reluctance to let him go on loan, as he will still technically be a Celtic player in a few months when the loyalty bonus is due.
52

B4 Part B,

29/08/2008 13:43:25
#44 agreed. And for the record he does not represent the feelings/attitude/whatever else you want to call it of this Hearts supporter.

FWIW I don't see him going to Hibs, Celtic have turned down far more money than Hibs can offer, also see wages as a stumbling block. I also don't see him signing for us, I would like him to join, it would be worth a punt to see if he could do the biz for us and every1 knows about our striking problems! but he is way too much of a hibby to come to us, something he made abunduntly clear when he played for Hibs, so I reckon this is a load of hyped up paper talk
53

#53 As others have noticed, 'everton-jambo' is either clearly not right in the head, or a child. Either way posts like that make you come across as a complete ph@nny, asking to meet up with a mentally retarded/child for a fight via the internet, then calling all hearts fans baw bags, then boasting about how much you earn and how much your house is worth. Next time think.

#65 I have no intention of getting involved in a big debate regarding whats goin on at the club right now, other than to say I am content with it for the time being, debt reduced recently, plans for stand submitted (concede this will put debt back up BUT at least it came down first) I'm happy to listen to Shabba say it is players he wants to bring in, so I shall wait and see what the season brings. A lot of people seem to forget that even one of vlads harshest critics (accept he wasn't before) George Foulkes continues to state even through his bitterness that he firmly believes Vlad is here for the long term, I'm inclined to believe this also.

Now to answer your question, there will always be a Hearts, therefore I will always support them, I don't see us going bust in my lifetime but IF and its a big IF we did, there would be sum amateur, rehashed, reformed type Hearts team that would get my backing, kinda like Wimbledon or that alternative Man Utd thing.

That was intended to be a quick post! lol

Riordan chose to put money before his career, as did many before him. He was advised by his agent, he took the agents'advise probably not too fully aware of what the egenys' best interests were. He chose to go to celtic well before he should have. IMO he thought he was better than he actually was at the time of his move.

I wouldn't want him back personally. If he does come back and does well then fine. I don't think we need a striker and he would be a luxury. In this case, I, for the first time will support the board in not splashing the cash.

Happy to be attacked for this one, so, fire away fellow Hibernian Supporters.

There have been discussions with Deeks agent and RP but RP is playing hardball over Riordan's salary. The bottom line is that Hibs ARE in negotiations, DR is a Hibby and wants to return and the sensible money is on DR signing for his former club before the window closes - even although that means DR accepting a MASSIVE drop in salary.

That's great news for us Jambos that DON'T want this Ned anywhere near Tynecastle.
