Kaunas crash hits Vlad hard

Published Date: 25 July 2007
VLADIMIR ROMANOV was today having to deal with FBK Kaunas losing out on a money- spinning Champions League tie with Rangers - and the result looks set to have implications for Hearts.
Although Romanov does not own Kaunas he is heavily involved in the running of the club and his UKIO Bankas group provide the major financial backing for the Lithuanian outfit.

After losing 3-1 to FK Zeta of Montenegro in the first leg of their qualifying tie Kaunas looked to be back on track for a lucrative meeting with Rangers on Tuesday night when they raced into a 3-1 lead of their own last night.

However, a last gasp strike for the visitors saw Kaunas crash out 5-4 on aggregate leaving Romanov to ponder his next move.

And the knock-on effect on Hearts looks set to be felt almost immediately with Kaunas' star striker Ricardas Beniusis now poised for a loan switch to Tynecastle.

The 27-year-old has been arguably the best player in the Lithuanian A Lyga this season and he revealed to the Evening News recently that Romanov had told him he would get his chance in Scottish football as soon as Kaunas were eliminated from Europe's premier club competition. This has now happened, perhaps earlier than hoped.

But whether Romanov now decided to make wholesale changes at Kaunas with the possibility of players moving in both directions between Edinburgh and Lithuania will be of most interest to supporters of both clubs.

Meanwhile, Hearts will discover next week whether midfielder Larry Kingston will be free to face Hibs in the opening game of the SPL season.

The Ghanaian, who has been a huge hit since arriving at Tynecastle, will have his appeal over a three-game ban handed out by the SFA heard at a hearing on either Wednesday or Thursday.

Should Hearts' appeal be unsuccessful, Kingston will be forced to sit out the visit of Hibs, as well as matches away to Aberdeen and at home to Gretna.

Hearts will be keeping their fingers crossed that the disciplinary committee finds in their favour, with vice-captain Christophe Berra already suspended.

The Hampden beaks have the power to uphold the original decision, reduce the number of matches Kingston has to serve or even increase his punishment if they deem the original ban was too lenient. It is, however, unlikely they would implement the latter.

Another striker on the books. Can we OFFLOAD some of the dross first??

2

Jacomo,

25/07/2007 11:12:04

If anything, Kaunas' failure would seem to have positive implications for Hearts, if this striker comes to Scotland and is any good.

With most other clubs in the SPL doing a lot of squad-building over the summer, tho, Hearts are playing catch-up. There are lots of unresolved questions and it can't be a good way to prepare for the season ahead.

"or even increase his punishment if they deem the original ban was too lenient. It is, however, unlikely they would implement the latter"...Aye right it is unlikely!

Send back Pilly and Kancelskis, keep Miko and Ivaskevicious for now and give them a few fringe players as we have a few too many just now.

I'd like to see Zal and Vel stay, a fit Chesny would be nice too.

Jimmy Jam Tart,

Even with Berra and Kingston missing we'll have to much in our locker for the Hobo's. 3-0 JT's.

i would welcome beniusis. but would like to see the back of elliot, mole & maybe even pospisil.

on the hobo thread, there is a suggestion that jim jefferies expects a firm bid for naismith today. not from rangers. 6pak has ruled out the hobos (aye like they were ever in the race) sooooo...

mmmmm?

Wake up and smell the champions league disappointment yet again Vlad!! Any chance of appointing/confirming us a manager. Don't know if you've noticed but, it'll soon be time to start playing what we here in Scotland call the Ess-pee-el. Get to it man!

Just what we need MORE Lithuanians...sigh!

Ok, the team that is your major source of 'talent' has been knocked out of the Champs League at the first hurdle. I suspect the next batch of huddies will be even poorer than the one that contained pillae biter and that chap whose name no-one can pronounce.

Bring 'em on.

Of course, any sort of suggestion like that round here suddenly becomes a "promise". Just you watch, this time tomorrow we'll be being told we said "Naismith is definitely signing for Hearts"...

Completely with you on that sentiment. Time for players to be shipped out/loaned out whatever, but for gods sake NOW!

#7
I'd be happy to see Ricardas Beniusis at the club also but only if we offload the likes of Mole, Elliot, Pospisil and Bednar. If anything could be taken from last season it was that even a knackered Velika was still our best striker and apparently Ricardas Beniusis is better, so bring him in!

But we MUST cull the squad and maybe Kaunus going out now is a good thing especially if it means fringe players on loan from Kaunus heading back! I know who i'd like to see leave... question is will they go??!

Kaunas out of the big one just goes to prove Romanov hasnt got a clue as to how to run a football team. loaning players here there and everywhere is not good for team moral. The mans an idiot, the majority of players we have are crap send them back and get in Scottish players. The new Season starts soon and where our Manager, I bet Frail doesnt even know whats going to happen to him. Romanov is the worst thing that has happened to the Hearts. The club has 60plus players and probably out of that lot 45or more would not get a game for Alloa no disrespect meant to Alloa by the way.

21

GSJ,

Edinburgh 25/07/2007 11:33:05

What a wholly inane story!! This is the main back page lead in the paper, despite it being a total non-story.

Ironically the really important news from an HMFC point of view is stuck in at the bottom, in that Kingston's (doomed) appeal is to be heard before the season starts.

This article is trying to suggest that players will start flocking between the 2 clubs. This is presumptious to the point of ridicule, we know that HMFC players do not go to Kaunas, and smacks of lazy journalism. So lazy, in fact, that no writer has even laid claim to it.

Surely staff at the evening news are not being told what to do from a tyrranical leader. Ah, sweet irony...

#8 Well done on making a complete fool of yourself!! You try to show up a poster for a spelling mistake then use the word "to" instead of "too" in your pathetic post. Look at your first point!

Stop being an ass if you can't spell properly yourself!! This site is awful at times and isn't helped by people like yourself.

If this striker Beniusis is better than Velicka then he'll be a worthy addition to the squad.

I'd try and sell Pospisil, I like him but he doesn't turn it on often enough, and i'd try and loan out Elliot & Mole. There is no point in having 7 or 8 strikers when you only need 4 or 5.

Why only a couple of months ago I dreamt about flair football tearing a team of jambo rejects to shreds, but it couldn't have happened, not at Hampden, not in a Cup Final (big or wee), not to score five...

What a dream though.

If only we'd put Hearts out en route to Hampden, with 81% possession of the football, passing it along the carpet as God intended...

...like I say, I'm just a day dreamer, they are the Big team (C) with the trophy in the...oh, wait, you mean...

It notice that no writer from EEV take credit for this article. It should have reported at what happened at match.

FBK Kaunas were cruise at 3-0 then Pascalis Mendy miss penalty to make it 4-0 and we surely then go on to meet Rangers.

It obvious that Zeta not like the high ball, kick it up the park at every opportunity tactics of FBK. FBK change tactics at 3-0 and try to play passing game. Why? No one in FBK team can play pass game. We much better at high ball and pick up loose ball in opponent half than play passing game.

Yes, please send some of or all of our Lithuanian players home. We have very little great players left!!

I am still shock by what happening from last night. We can be 4-0 but then we miss a penalty, then Zeta score with 90 minutes played.

It is bad to be a Kauno fan today.

Writer does not know Lithuanian football. Best player this year is Mantas Savenas of Ekranas. Beniušis can score goals but it is important to recall, that the football standard in our country is poor. Beniušis is a lazy player who does not run much.

Great so we have players to fill in for Berra and Kingston if they dont play against the Hibs. Big deal we will put in more foreign players. Hearts is a Scottish Team and should consist mainly of Scottish players. How can any Hearts fan be happy with 7 or 8 foreigners in a maroon jersey. Romanov doesnt know the saying if the thing doesnt need fixing dont touch it. Top of the league with GB and he starts to tinker where are we now? NO Manager, NO real goal scorer, and a guy Hearts daft trying his best does not know if he is staying or going. Romanov your all CRAP:

31 - Thank you for your articulate response, although presumtious of you to presume I am a man(!). I appreciate your derision at my point, but could you perhaps enlighten me as to which players from HMFC (Why the little 'o', i've often wondered!?) have gone to Kaunas.

I whole-heartedly agree that together we do not have enough digits to count the amount that have come in our direction, but the article seems to suggest that Hearts players will be going East. Which we know will not happen. Perhaps a couple of Lithuanians that have come over and been part of the squad (Klimek and Pilibiatis for example) may return, but I don't see any 'key' Hearts players going to Kaunas...it doesn't happen.

Also, I am intrigued by your defamatory comment "...if you and the rest of the believers can’t see the long term damage that will do to the mighty jambo’s then I feel sorry for you..." Thank you very much for your sympathy, although your comments are incredibly presumptious given that a) you don't know me and b) I have never posted on this site before. My reasons for the latter have always been that I don't really see the point in having trivial arguments about newspaper articles with people who know nothing about me and vice versa. While I do not doubt your credentials as a QC, I would hope that your job would keep you busier...

My real point was that the article is a NON-story. Unfortunately, like most message boards, someone has chosen to denigrate my response while throwing in their own presumptions. Thanks for the response, but next time please read the post before choosing to try and bury it.

Right you wee ***** the arrogance of a Celtic fan never seizes to amaze me!..."Do us all a favour, both Hearts & hibs, please go away and dump your bile elsewhere".

THIS STORY HAS REFERENCE AND RELEVENCE TO HEARTS AND WITH THE HOBOS BEING OUR CITY RIVALS THEY ARE BOUND TO HAVE AN OPINION...YOU HOWEVER ARE UNWELCOME...Your team are an assortment of anyone who dosent come from the south East of Glasgow ( mainly Irish glory hunters and f4nnies like you from elsewhere in Scotland) as the local residents live in poverty. Rather than coming on our threads all high and mighty you could contact your club and see what their plans are for the re-generation of the area and the charity provision that is planned for these kids...After all wasnt that the original purpose of your imposter football club?

IN SHORT P155 0ff BACK TO THE WEEG' AS NO-ONE HERE GIVES A CRAP WHAT A WEEGIE THINKS ABOUT HEARTS OR HIBS. ATTACKING A GUY WHO DOSENT ENTER INTO THE BILE THROWING THAT COMES FROM MOST OF THE OF FANS ON THESE THREADS IS OUT OF ORDER AND " GET A ROOM"...? THAT IS JUST POOR MATE.

#81. Would you put money on those placings? Thought not. Why make yourself look silly and ignorant about football just to wind up Jambos? When making predictions you take last season's performance into account and look at how a team has improved. So... the sensible money is on:

1. Celtic, significantly stronger
2. Rangers, a little stringer, will rely on the supposed team spirit of signing a bunch of players who all seem to be mates
3. Hearts, a stronger team spirit which is important, Kingston and Stewart signed and others to follow shortly, some (expensive) dead wood gone, young players coming through.
4. Kilmarnock, especially if they keep Naismith, Jeffries is a great manager
5. Aberdeen, weaker team since last year, concerns over Calderwood leaving
6. Motherwell, McGhee is a proven manager and could turn them around
7. Hibs, only just scraped top 6 last year with their best team for a while, significantly weaker squad this year, unproven manager, inexperienced signings
8. Dundee Ut, toss up between them, Hibs and Motherwell for 6th
9. Falkirk
10. Gretna

And I'm being nice to Hibs there. Calderwood, Jeffries, McGhee and Levein are all better managers than Collins. How you can put Hibs 3rd with a weakened team is beyond me. That's a final line-up I'd put money on.

79

Lenny,

Nae probs Victor, didnt like some of the stuff said on the Hibs story either. Well over the top. I guess its a lot easier to abuse someone that it is to engage in debate. This site is going downhill fast.

Yeah, but asking a question and singling out one person NOT to answer it is a bit out of order imo. I was not just refering to yourself by the way. the Hibs story turned into a 'lets gang up on someone' thread. No very pleasant to read.

#94. It's based on logic and yes, we lost a lot of points last year due to poor team spirit, it's what Pressley and co protested about. This is the first pre-season, even including when Burley arrived, that Hearts have had under Romanov. Last year we were straight into Champs League qualifiers and were woefully underprepared. Anyone who's even played 5-a-sides knows team spirit counts for an awfy lot.

Even before Romanov, Hearts consistently finished best of the rest more than any other club in the SPL. To say they'll do it thi season isn't too far fetched.

Re 59 Ian, I probably have been a Hearts fan longer than you have lived, say 56 years,I am now 61 years of age. Have you seen the likes of Willie Bauld , Alex Young Gordon Marshall, Davy Holt play for the Hearts all Scottish lads. I think you miss understood what I was trying to say, I dont mind foreign players playing but I would much prefer seeing Scottish lads in the maroon jersey. As far as the Rangers are concerned I am not interested but you must admit its not good for Scottish football having so many foreigners in the teams

I really think that the Jambo's belief that JC is a crap coach is gonna come back to bite you all on the arse. You lot really so seem to hate the guy. But lets look a facts.

He hasnt even been a gaffer for a year, he took over a team sitting 7th in the league and finished an admittedly dissapointing 6th but WON A CUP. Now how many Hearts managers in the last 40 years or so have done that?

Every manager wants their own players in and Collins is now starting to do this. I actually believe we have a stronger squad now, with the obvious exception of Brown.

85

Jamboi,

Edin 25/07/2007 15:26:02

...97

Lenny,

The reasons I have HUGE doubts about JC is because of what David Murphy said in the wake of the CIS Cup final. Murhpy's sentiments were that the players got that win their way and that he thinks it only papered over the cracks. He refered to the statistics regarding the amount of games Hibs won and the goals shipped and scored. I think that he was worried quite a bit.

# 98 Jamboi

A fair point, but Im in the same belief as many other Hibees in that Mowbrays team may not have beaten either St Johnstone or Killie in that Cup.

No arguing that Hibs went on a terrible run but there is no doubt that Collins was experimenting with one eye on this season. the team that got a draw at Pittodrie being the prime example. Dont think I have ever seen a younger team whilst watching Hibs.

I guess next season will be the test. One of us is going to be right.

Anyway, back to commenting on the story...

I hope the Kaunas defeat doesn't affect Vlad's financial input into hearts as he would surely have picked up a few quid from the next leg.

How long do we reckon Larry's ban will be after the appeal? I suspect it'll be kept the same or maybe get one game knocked off- they wont want to rescind it out of general principle IMHO

92

Jamboi,

Edin 25/07/2007 16:00:50

Lenny.

When Levein took over at Hearts the first thing that he did was have a go at the talented players as being lazy thiefs and then upped their training and stopped their holidays. Many left and there was much moaning but in the end looking back many of these guys had begun to rest on their Scottish Cup winning laurals and were no longer applying themselves properly...Jeffries had us playing with flair and excitement and Levein was far more defence minded but both got results cementing us as the third force in their tenure. Given the choice of the two JJ would always be my prefference though.

The above ramblings I think are able to be applied to the Hibs situation ( in part ) if you replace Scottish Cup winning with entertaining football playing. There was much disquiet when Levein took over but he did on the whole a decent job and was a very inexperienced manager. You need to hope this is the case with JC and that Murphy is only eating sour grapes about extra fitness training.

Victoria, you should stay off the embalming fluid. I work beside rows and rows of Jambo season ticket holders (alright 6 of them) and none are going to the Barca game. It seems strange that the core support aren't all unanimous about the game. I think there will be a lot of kids there in that it's an opportunity to see a great team and a child has less standards when it comes to what a good game of football involves. Clearly there will be many season ticket holders coming in on the back of this but I can only call it like I see it.

I keep an eye on the Hearts boards, as they are the self appointed 2nd/3rd force in Scottish football. Therefore in a free society I have every right to post on here and just because it interferes with your deluded rantings about Hearts winning this and that I will not be silenced. Your team are cr@p your club is a laughing stock and you win hee haw!!!
I hardly ever post on the Hibs threads as they never go on about how they are going to win the league etc. when they do I will.

#113 VOTM, i like that. because you know 6 folk who are not going, that leads you to form the opinion that the "core support" are not unanimous about going, and that there will be loads of kids going. let's not argue about the use of the word unanimous 'cos i am fully aware that you need 100% attendance for the support to be unanimous.

before you reply with another slanted view on the world, just try to remember that you're basing your theory on the fact that your 6 colleagues are not going. it's hardly a scientific indicator of how hearts fans feel about the game now is it?

no, i'll stand by what i said. about 10,000 - 15,000 neutrals. 35,000 - 40,000 hearts fans. obviously we do not have 35,000 - 40,000 ST holders, but as a club we have taken that kind of 'ball park' figure to matches before.

bhoyed, this will be the last time i reply to you. this time i promise you. you made a fool of yourself earlier and i kinda thought you wouldn't have the brass neck to lower the tone again, at least not for a while. it seems you under estimated the depth of loathing the regular posters (hearts AND HIBS) have for your special brand of nasty trouble making. there's no point in corresponding with you any longer because you have a gigantic chip on your shoulder about something and i really can't be bothered with you. you really did show yourself up earlier as an immature little to**er.

It is reported on the BBC website tonight that Hearts and hibs are going head to head in a bid to sign Naismith from Killie. Although it also suggests he may spurn them in order to go to Rangers for next to nothing in a seasons time.

If I were him (and ok i'm not and biased ) i'd go to Hearts, he'll definately be first choice striker, get paid much more than Killie, he'll get to move through to Edinburgh and in a couple of seasons move to the premiership for millions or more likely a move to Rangers via Wigan for next to nothing....

He'd probably do just as well at hibs mind, but his bank balance won't be nearly as big and he'll end up at celtic, then after a season in the reserves/fringes of first team be off to Norwich... and out of the Scotland picture altogether.

Whoever gets him, for the money (even at 1.7 - 2 million) its money in the bank as he'll only get better! At least at either of the edinburgh teams (more so Hearts - ahem) he has a chance of winning a trophy and european footy... in a seasons time!!!
