HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today warned new signing Grzegorz Szamotulski he'll struggle to oust Yves Ma-Kalambay following the young Belgian goalkeeper's derby day performance.
Paatelainen hopes the necessary paperwork will be cleared this week to free the 32-year-old Pole for Sunday's return clash between the Capital rivals in the Cup at Easter Road.

But, while happy to have finally ended his long search for an experienced goalkeeper, Paatelainen was equally delighted with Ma-Kalambay's display during Saturday's 0-0 draw at Tynecastle.

He said: "Yves was fantastic, he came and collected crosses, he had a couple of saves to make and he looked very sharp. That's exactly the response I wanted. I want three high quality goalkeepers (Andy McNeil being the third] fighting for that one place.

"In training and when selected for matches they must push themselves to do well, to improve and that way everyone gets to benefit."

Six days before Hearts' visit Paatelainen was reluctant to start debating his line-up for Sunday but on the goalkeeping situation he said: "Whenever someone performs so well it would be unfair to leave him out.

"We'll see who plays on Sunday but Yves certainly did not do himself any harm."

Ma-Kalambay himself insisted he's looking forward to battling it out with Szamotulski and McNeil for the gloves, revealing he's just delighted the speculation which has surrounded Hibs' goalkeeping situation has finally been resolved.

The former Chelsea youngster, who clocked up his 50th appearance for Hibs, said: "To be fair, it's not been that easy with all that's been said about Andy and me and signing another goalkeeper.

"Now we have and we can see what is going to happen. I will be the first to wish Grzegorz all the best and make him welcome, we are team-mates after all. But it is all about challenges and it will be a challenge for Andy and me to step up our games which will be beneficial for us and the team."

Szamotulski's arrival, however, means the No.1 jersey at Easter Road will still remain vacant with the former Dundee United star opting to wear No.13 while Ma-Kalambay favours No.50 and McNeil No.21.

Paatelainen said: "The No.1 jersey was available but Grzegorz prefers No.13. It hadn't been taken so he has taken it."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen declared himself satisfied to have succeeded in landing his priority targets just days into the January transfer window, Finnish countryman Jonatan Johansson having made his debut at Tynecastle having officially become a Hibs player on January 1. The Hibs boss said: "I am pleased because before the window opened I wanted to improve our goalkeeping position and in the wide area. We've managed to do both already."

However, Paatelainen insisted he's still looking to further strengthen his squad although he's made it clear a number of players who are no longer in his plans could be leaving.

He said: "There are one or two I am still looking at.

"If we are lucky enough to bring someone in then that will be great, if not we already have a good squad of players."

Hibs have been advised by the SFA that David van Zanten will miss their next SPL match, against his old club St Mirren on January 17, after the defender picked up a one-match suspension.

Keep Maka in, surely he can't have 2 good games in a row!

Will be a close game again I think and depends on how well the Hibs keeper plays.

Think 2-1 to JTs but happy to take them back to Tynie and win the replay.

No 1. A close game only dependant on the Hibs keeper having a good game ? A decent second half display by your lot at the weekend and the cup game is already a formality. Somehow don't think so. No boasts , predictions but most of all no BULLSH1T ! Come on you colour of the grass.

Macalamity had his first error free Derby game and its just as well or it could have been a pumping.

Hoof ball Hibs offered very little threat. Their players were probably put off by the booing of the minutes silence, hard to motivate yourself after that.

You are scum and you know you are.

I was unhappy that a small minority of so called Hibs fans booed the minutes silence but did you expect anything less. I thought this was why the "minutes applause" was now flavour of the month?

If I was a cynical sort of a chap I'd say Hearts went the silence route to ensure some bad press for Hibs instead of them for a change as everyone knew that there would people in the Hibs support who would boo.

On the subject of scum in these situations I seem to remember a far more disgusting display in the aftermath of Pope John Paul II dying in a game against celtic where singing, chanting & hollering was the order of the day.... Remind me who which clubs "fans" were the scumbags on this occassion?

People who live in glass houses and all that eh?

As for big Maka.... Very good game on Sat, still looked a wee bit nervy at times but certainly staring to show the faith put in him by Mixu and old six pack before him.

No 4. Your name says it all. Propoganda. A few good saves by Maka , but then that is why we have keepers in the game. Just another derby game where no one team could claim to be THE ONE. You don't win games without scoring goals or am I missing the point of the game. GGTH.

4 check out the matchday programme and we know who the scum is.

I urge every Hibs supporter to hand their programme back and demand a £3 refund for this piece of childish nonsense.I know that Hearse fc havent probably got 3 quid to give back but give it a try.

Why give a minutes silence in a derby game for a guy who played a handful of games for Hearse fc..it was probably the editor of the programme that thought that one up.

There was very little bad press about Hibs re the minutes silence. When we done it it was all over the papers! Obviously it was because it was the Pope. I think that unless the person who has died has something to do with football then there should be no minutes silences at football matches. I don't agree with what Hearts fans done but I also don't think there should be a minutes silence for the Pope at a football match.

Unfortunately there is always someone whoever you support that will act like fools.

Rather than attempting to attain the moral high ground or attempt some petty point scoring, would it not be better just to appreciate that both supports have an unfortunate minority of to55ers in their ranks?

Most of whom can sadly be found on these threads of late.

It's called being objective.

I thought the two or three Hibs fans who booed and made the 'pump'comment were well out of order. However the do'nuts in Section N, giving the Hibs Fans the V's and 'No Surrender wave' during the same silence were equally ignorant and disrespectful.

I despise the Yams and their puss filled support, but 99.9% of the crowd respected the silence, that has to be the real story.

again another board that goes totally of the track. Being a hibs fan i thought Maka done well, and hopefully will the competition will show that no one position in between the sticks is safe and expect nothing but 100% each game they play and in training.

The result bettered the greens as didn't play too well, but with the lineup wasn't expecting pefect passing especially with the pitch not at it's best as we had more workmen like starting 11.

Cup game will be a totally different ball game.

Good game - either side could have won.
Hope Mixu plays Shiels next w/end instead of O'Brien who was poor. JJ can only get better. Hibs to win comfortably on sunday.

BTW There's plenty of morons in both sets of fans - idiot hearts fans who gesticulated their way through the silence and the idiot hibees who shouted and booed. Then there were the jambos who thought it was funny to make fun of Dean Shiels disability and the guy beside me who shouted at the jambos "F****** shut up you ignorant c****" Mmmmmmm.. who's ignorant?
33

Blondie,

05/01/2009 16:28:03
Re the Dean Shiels song, I think you'll find plenty of Hearts fans who were appalled at the minority singing that, just as I'm sure the majority of Hibs fans were at the morons who disrupted the minute's silence. Oh, and Hearts have also issued an apology on their official website over "that" song too.
Will both sets of fans be on their best behaviour this Sunday then? I won't be holding my breath - but I'm sure any problems will be down to a small, idiot-minded minority.

No, I didn't rise. I put you firmly in your place.

And as a proper Hibbie, I can think of far, far better examples than Keith Houchen to quote.

Houchen, a diddy that didnae play for Hibs again having thoroughly abused the travelling cabbage at a pre-season game at Starks Park. Never seen a Hibs player do that, never forgiven.

And when he did play, he was mince.

As a football fan first and a Jambo (close second) I was disgusted at the Dean Shiels chant, to overcome such a disability and play professional football is an inspiration to any youngster suffering a similar disability to achieve his/her sporting dreams. As for the minutes silence, I could have forecast the outcome beforehand, I'm sure it would have been the same from a section of the Hearts support had it been a Hibs ex-player who had died, surely it would be more sensible to have had a minutes applause thus drowning out the non-thinking numpties.
