Clyde 3- 0 Hibs
MIXU PAATELAINEN today admitted Hibs face a grim start to the season unless his players show a sudden and dramatic improvement over the next nine days.
It was a chilling warning which will do nothing to quell the growing anxiety among many Easter Road fans dismayed at their side's dismal pre-season form which has seen them not only fail to win any of their six matches but also find the back of the net. While the lack of success against IF Elfsborg in the InterToto Cup and Spanish giants Barcelona was at least explainable, Paatelainen has been at a loss to understand the subsequent failings in matches with lower division opposition.

Having delivered a stinging rebuke of his faltering stars following the shock defeat by Cowdenbeath two days earlier, Paatelainen was again raging at their ineptitude after watching them concede three goals to Clyde, a side which had to battle for First Division survival last season.

Now time is fast running out as Paatelainen seeks to rectify the glaring deficiencies which have surfaced over the past month before Hibs head to Kilmarnock a week on Saturday.

The big Finn has argued long and hard over what has been a less than satisfactory run of events that everything has been geared towards that trip to Rugby Park but even he was forced to concede that prospect is looking increasingly fraught with danger given the events of last night.

"Poor, really poor," was his assessment of 90 minutes in which Clyde ran out deserved winners. "If we play like that against Kilmarnock then it won't be a pretty sight."

Adding to Paatelainen's concerns will be the fact that the side he fielded last night was, apart from skipper Rob Jones, injured playmaker Merouane Zemmama and new signing Joe Keenan, at full strength. Having already stated a number of players had all but put themselves out of contention for the opening day of the season thanks to their woeful performance against Cowdenbeath on Monday night, Paatelainen's options look minimal.

Both at Central Park and again last night at Broadwood, the failings which need to be corrected in double quick time were obvious, a stuttering attack allied to a slack defence, the classic combination for defeat. A near-post flick from a corner gifted Clyde star David McKay the first of his two goals, Roddy MacLennan adding a second before the interval as young Paul Hanlon backed off before McKay enjoyed the break of the ball after McLaren, who had beaten David van Zanten all too easily, had seen his shot break off Chris Hogg to complete a comprehensive victory for the home side.

Throughout Paatelainen sat, a dejected figure showing none of the histrionics which had led to him being ordered from the dug-out at Central Park, an act which will see him banished to the stand for the SPL clashes with Falkirk and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

And afterwards he was in no mood to mince his words. He said: "We are trying to pass the ball but some players, quite clearly, are not yet, or maybe never will be, good enough to do that."

It was a damning indicment from Paatelainen, who continued: "The mistakes we made at the back were unbelievable, our defending was very slack. I could still be playing if defenders were to stand ten yards off me."

Paatelainen was equally scathing of his strikeforce, the partnership of Steven Fletcher and Colin Nish which looked so promising when they were first thrown together in February now looking pretty toothless.

Both had chances, Fletcher glancing a header wide as did Nish who also fired an angled shot into the chest of Clyde goalkeeper Peter Cherrie who also brought off an unbelievable close-range save from Alan O'Brien, but otherwise the home defence were comfortable as they saw their visitors visibly sag in front of their eyes.

Paatelainen said: "We had chances but our strikers are not sharp enough to convert them, they are nowhere near ruthless enough and don't have that arrogance they should have in front of goal." Again, however, Paatelainen's options look severely limited with Clayton Donaldson available for transfer, Abdessalam Benjelloun angling for a move to Belgium and 20-year-old Damon Gray loaned out to Partick Thistle until January, leaving the Hibs boss with only Ross Campbell, who has yet to score a competitive goal, as back-up.

Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic will provide Hibs with, one would imagine, even sterner opposition than that they have faced in Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and Clyde, offering, it would seem, little chance for morale to be restored before the serious action begins.

But somehow in the space of a few days Paatelainen must strive to put right the wrongs, something which hasn't been achieved over the course of more than a month. He said: "We must improve a lot, we must get much, much sharper. Every player must take more responsibility and improve.

"I told the players there is no point and no room for anyone to feel sorry for themselves at all. Quite clearly everyone needs to realise what they need to do. Everyone needs to be sharper, to make sure they are not the one who makes a mistake because we have far too many players making mistakes.

"We should be better than that. It was a fantastic big pitch, an excellent surface, ideal conditions to pass the ball well and create chances but we are still forcing the passes and giving the ball away far too easily.

"If you do that then you are defending and then if you defend in a slack manner you concede goals and that's what happened." Paatelainen, of course, has until the close of the transfer window at the end of next month to bring in further new faces to add to those of Van Zanten, Keenan and Steven Thicot, but it is clear a squad which overflowed with quality only a couple of seasons ago is lacking that commodity, a consequence of the inevitable sale of talent and a failure to find adequate replacements.

While, by his own admission, Paatelainen has an over-blown squad, there are obviously a number of players he doesn't deem good enough.

The problem he has, however, is that while he needs to move at least some of them on to free wages for others, some will be reluctant to do so knowing they have the comfort of a contract at Easter Road which will have to be honoured unless the club comes to an agreement to offload them now and so allow Paatelainen further room for manoeuvre.

Hibs: McNeil, Van Zanten, Hogg, Murray, Hanlon, Shiels, Thicot, Rankin (Yantorno 61), Fletcher (Morais 61), O'Brien. Subs not used: Grof, Stevenson, Canning, Campbell.

Referee: Eddie Smith.

Mixu, What happened to all the rhetoric over the last few weeks that "we are working towards the Kilmarnock game and everything will ok by then" Sounds like you were working on hope rather than anything you were seeing on the pitch.

How about a statement from the board rather than hiding behind Mixu (although there is a fair bit to hide behind)?

Come on Rod, speak up my man, your quick enough to tell us how great a job you've done balancing the books.

Now come out and tell us how your going to balance the team and make them UEFA cup place contendeners at the ver least in the next 8 days...

Come on Rod, speak up..... We're waiting....

Your silence is defaning.......

SACK THE BOARD!!

"Mug" Your handle says it all Hobo boy. My season ticket has not been renewed and I agree Vlad is taking us for a ride but hey your team has managed to put a smile back on my face. The last few weeks have been rather humiliating for the "FLAIR" team. Would you not agree or are you deluded as well??

I agree we have been absolute garbage so far, but luckily it's still pre-season so we will have to judge for real when the season starts next week.

The signs are not good for both Edin teams this season.

And as for me quaking in my boots, behave yourself, it's still only a game and would never take it that seriously.

Sad little Hobo, I think you'll find a fair few people disagreeing with you on that small teamed mentality quote.
11

Mug,

#8 deluded?? nah dont think so, i dont beleive were gonna be competing for the league, i dont beleive were gonna bring world cup stars to our club, i dont beleive were gonna compete in the champions league on a regular basis!! I know what state my clubs in, its on the downward spiral and unless something is done its gonna get worse, it all lies at Mr Petries feet, no money to buy any players and a wage structure that is laughable, supposedly johanson wanted £2,500 and we couldnt offer that, what sort of players are we supposed to attract with cash like that!
12

104 years in a row!!,

Edinburgh 31/07/2008 12:35:10
Exactly the wee team mentality that God Petrie has installed. Look at the recent Barcelona game, for example, the promotion was second rate and even with the help of our local radio station (via a certain Mr Stott) you still failed to break 30,000. That is pathetic to say the least. Why don't you guys do something about it and protest? Nah buggr it just stick on the Proclaimers "Sunshine on Leith" and evrything is dandy down the Copa da Easter Road.

PS Your team has been utter gash for 30-40 years now and you boy's seem happy to accept it? At least we've had a few near misses in the league and cup's you Hobo's are happy to get a draw at tynie!!

The Hibs PR has gone for a Burton, the Barca game was a Fiasco, out of the Intertattie on the first week of the trades, no goals since april and still like to brag about being debt free???? Hearts have wiped another £12m from the dedt and with Riordan holding talks with Hearts, When can we see Crisis at Delusion mansions headlines? Looks like mad Vlad will outlast St Petrie after all?
15

Bit surprised that the Scotsman hasn't just gone all the way with it's tabloid reporting. All that's missing is the Hibs club crest split in two - but maybe I'm being harsh and it's actually in the print edition.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

Looking like Mixu's biggest achievement may be making JC look like he knew what he was doing...

Come on, get it together Mixu, that's more than enough ammo now for the opposition, get in that dressing room and sort it out so we can all get behind our team.

Cant comment on the last 2 games as haven't been there to see with my own eyes.

The thing that struck me at the Barca game was the severe lack of effort and commitment from a lot of players. Bout time mixu came out and stated that some, just aren't good enough.

The board have a lot to answer for with their 'wage structure'. Why not just give a budget to the manager and let him decide how its spent. So, if he wanted, he could have one player on £20k a week and another on 500pw.

Get it sorted. If Riordan does go to hearts, queue mayhem at ER if we dont have at least 6pts after 4 games.

Same old story Petrie happy to get players in if they cost nothing and pay a wage under £3000 per wk . What do we get for that S**** we still need a goalkeeper who can keep goals out and a striker that can score goals . Petrie take of the green tint glasses off and give Mixu some money for players up the wage bill bring back Riordan. The fans would rather have a good team than a new east stand .
So come on you run the club for the fans the fans have told you what they want so get of you a*** and delivery the goods or get out.

Hibs and Hearts toiling to score goals in pre-season, not surprising when both teams sell anyone who scores a handful of goals for a few easy bucks. Where is the old Capital pride. Both our teams need to be strong so we can compete with the OF.

dear hearts fans,
you are all on here gloating about whats happened in a few FRIENDLY games for hibs.

if it has escaped your notice that hearts havent won a game and also on tuesday got beaten with a german amatuer side afetr losing a goal after 18 seconds.

lets just wait until the competative stuff starts and by the way great windup re riordan signing for hearts-dream on it would be the last thing he would do and a club that has 34m debt cannot afford a player like riordan.stick to jamie mole and bennyuseless...

concentrate on finishing above the hibees this season-remember we are the best team in edinburgh at the moment!!!

I think you'll find that Hibs haven't won or scored since April, including competitive games.

Was the Intertoto not a competition?

At least Hearts have a madman to blame. What is Hibs excuse? Last season you had an excellent start and all was rosy. What now?

when mixu was appointed in january i was not convinced he was the man for the job, ( yogi was ), a string of decent results though and i began to be swayed otherwise.
but now, his managerial inexperiance is beginning to tell, usually i see things through a green glasses, and tell myself thing will be grand on the day, we'll pull it out the hat, but i cannot see how this situation is going to get any better soon.
its up to Mr Petrie now to .....(finish this sentance)

Quaote from the article "Having delivered a stinging rebuke of his faltering stars following the shock defeat by Cowdenbeath two days earlier, Paatelainen was again raging at their ineptitude after watching them concede three goals to Clyde, a side which had to battle for First Division survival last season."

Message for Mixu - shouting won't correct what lies in your control. It's your team. You give the places. You manage and coach the preparation. You must stand by your decisions, tactics and player choice. I think what you are saying is - we do not have good enough players. If that is so, you must take part blame.

Message for the board - you sold our best players over a period of time. Now is the time to replace quality with quality. I thought long and hard about my Season Ticket for this coming season during the Collins fiasco. I am now happy I cut of my nose to spite my face. For this season I am pay at the gate. I will follow my own threat to make my protest by holding back my money until I content that I am getting value for money.

Message for the team - prove me wrong please.
