Hearts 4 - Rangers 2
AS HAS been suspected for some time now, Vladimir Romanov's club management style often leans more towards the crazy than just plain stupid. In other words, there can frequently be method found in the Russian tsar's madness.

When Romanov accused
his players of lacking heart in Lithuania last week, part of his intention would have been to provoke the kind of reaction that was glaringly evident at Tynecastle on Saturday. This kind of impassioned "we'll show him" approach is something that Rangers simply couldn't live with.

Hearts' overpowering of the previously unbeaten Glasgow side resulted in a victory which, if slightly unexpected, had a rousing effect on all concerned. It was also one in the eye for the club owner, who had threatened to replace under-performing first-team members with under-19 players.

The established players' response was to deliver an exhilarating performance that has been lurking beneath the surface all season. However, Saturday wasn't just about aggression and desire, it was about playing controlled football intertwined with the sort of movement and industry not evident in a Hearts team for some time.

Rangers last lost four league goals to the Tynecastle side 71 years ago, although they suffered a 4-2 reverse in Edinburgh on Scottish Cup duty in February 1995. And following goals by Andy Driver, Ibrahim Tall, Michael Stewart and Kestutis Ivaskevicius, Walter Smith could have few complaints about his team's first defeat of the 2007/08 season.

The hosts were visibly infused with pride come full-time and indulged in a public show of unity in the middle of the pitch. Generally, it was hugs and smiles all round.

"We knew that was in them. Not just the passion side of it but the actual football we produced," said Stephen Frail, Hearts' assistant coach. "I thought some of the football we played was terrific.

"There are a lot of things spoken about at this club in terms of nationalities not having enough togetherness. I think the boys showed they do have that, but the pleasing thing apart from that was the way they played. Sometimes we get tagged as not being a good football team, but we showed we are.

"It's a perfect example of how we can play and I'm sure there's better. I've said all along we have good players here and it's been proven. We can get better but it's also important not to get carried away.

"Andy's goal was a great strike and gave us a perfect start. To get the second one and go in 2-0 at half-time was a real bonus. We said that Rangers would change things at half-time and they did, but we showed character when they came back into the game in the second half and went on to score two more goals.

"It's vital we play at that level every week. There's no use doing it against Rangers and then not doing it against Inverness. It's a massive three points for us which built on what we did in the Motherwell game. We can take a lot of confidence from that."

Driver's scintillating opener preceded Tall's deflected effort which looped over Allan McGregor and into the Rangers net. Smith re-organised his side during the interval after starting with Barry Ferguson and Jean-Claude Darcheville in reserve, and the Scotland midfielder was fouled by Robbie Neilson to allow Daniel Cousin to haul Rangers back into proceedings from the penalty spot.

However, if the visitors' resilience was commendable, Hearts' dogged insistence on maximising their lead was astonishing. Within 20 minutes they were basking in the security of a 4-1 advantage after Stewart's penalty and Ivaskevicius' carefully-constructed fourth.

In between, tensions boiled over following an altercation between Robbie Neilson and DaMarcus Beasley which saw a Hearts player accused of cheating for the second time in a week. Neilson and Beasley exchanged verbals and the full-back was tripped, albeit accidentally, as he attempted to jog clear of the confrontation in the Rangers penalty area.

Saulius Mikoliunas' antics at Hampden Park have dominated discussions of late, which doubtless influenced Ally McCoist's thoughts as he accused Neilson of diving in order to further incriminate Beasley.

Frail, though, was rightly having none of it and was seen mouthing, "Don't give us any of that cheating sh***," in McCoist's direction.

Afterwards, he was a touch more diplomatic. "Handbags," he said of the incident.

"I don't think it would be a great fight. These things happen on the touchline in the heat of the moment. Some things were said and it's forgotten about already.

"I think the Miko thing might have galvanised the team. There was a lot of criticism on him and rightly so, but I think it went way over the top and it pulled the team together."

Goalkeeper Steve Banks agreed. "In Lithuania, we were in another part of the country that no-one knew too much about so we worked on our togetherness. That's what the trip was about.

"It was hard work and we had a game out there which didn't go the way we wanted it but it was about trying things. People were playing in positions they weren't used to. That's what the trip was about and it's worked well for us. We got together after the Celtic game. Some fingers had to be pointed, a few eyeball to eyeballs, but it was a positive. It wasn't having a go at one another, it was all of us together saying what we need to do to get out the slump. It's working so far but there's an awful long way to go."

Smith was frustrated by his defenders' ineptitude at Tynecastle, with Carlos Cuellar enduring his worst display since arriving in Scotland.

Referee Mike McCurry could have dismissed the Spaniard but overlooked an early challenge from behind on Ksanavicius before booking him later for a tackle on the outstanding Christian Nade.

"Our clearances were poor and defensively we struggled, so Hearts deserved to be 2-0 up at half-time," said Smith.

"I thought we'd kick on after getting back to 2-1 but then we gave away another goal and the two-goal deficit made it difficult for us psychologically.

"Hearts didn't surprise us. We are experienced enough to know that, no matter how their team is doing, when Rangers or Celtic come here they raise their game. If they played at that level every week they would have no problem. But they don't. We have to handle that, it's part and parcel of being at the Old Firm, and we didn't handle it on Saturday."

Smith defended his decision to leave Ferguson out of the starting XI, citing the player's lack of heading ability as central to the decision.

But the captain's presence from the start would have had little effect on the final outcome of this match. Hearts were simply that good.

Watched Rangers goalie McGregor's vicious assault on Elliot (in the penalty box) on You Tube

1 Very nasty, McGregor should have been sent off

2 Should have been followed by a penalty

How the F*** did the ref and linesman miss that one? And, retrospective video evidence a la Miko, will the GFA use video evidence to punish Rangers and McGregor???

Fat chance.

Well done for taking the "champions elect" down a peg or two.

However, I've seen herts play this season. Just how rubbish must rangers have been?

I reckon that'll be Newcastle Jambo back on suicide watch. There is nothing that upsets him more than Hearts (and Vlad!) doing well!

"will the GFA use video evidence to punish Rangers and McGregor???" (#1)

Cool your paranoia. Plenty of Rangers players have faced trial by video. Perhaps more than any other club.

Poor perfromance by Rangers, starting with a dodgy team selection. But well done to Hearts.

Typical. Rangers weren't poor, Hearts were brilliant, if you saw the game. Rangers were outclassed and made to look ordinary by a Hearts team that has regained its credibility with a powerful and classy display.

No doubt the weegies will be choking on their bluenose burgers for some time..........bring on Stuttgart.

Unbeliavable that he didn't see red along with Thomson and that Spanish boy.

The whistle already blew before he done it so it wouldn't have been a pen anyway.

I was even more angry about the Sunday papers only commenting on the challenge in a photo description. I was raging!

Almost reads like a bit of humble pie being eaten here!

I'd thought it would have been impossible for us to get 2nd place this year but, after watching Rangers play on Saturday, I'm starting to gain in confidence.

Away the Hertz - 3 'easy' games coming up and Hibs, Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen are all playing each other this weekend!

Well done Stevie Frail (he takes the flak - he alone should get the credit!) Lets keep thim momentum going!

Hearts Dream Believer,

How does a two handed shove in the box turn into an accidental trip.
I'm also sure the clash came after a soft freekick on Beasley down the right hand side . Hearts were good though, almost too good to believe after recent weeks.
Better shape with the 4-1-4-1 with support for Nade coming quicker and the wide players doing a job for once.
A football writer would have spotted this rather than write about the sideshows.
Kick on The Jambos.

Anglo Jambo,

At least Miko didn't hurt anyone, but McGregor got away with two unprovoked attacks on Hearts players, the latter on Elliot probably the worse. Will anything be done about it, I doubt it. I have spoken about this before about the violent play that goes on and nothing done about it and it is more important to punish events that cause no injury whatsoever. It is said McCurry had a good game on Saturday, I think he left too much dangerous play not penalised. Cuellar and Thompson got away with murder. A couple of verbal warnings. If there is sectarian singing or racist remarks on the terraces then let the police and stewards sort it out and refs do your job properly on field, if it is a deliberate foul on the field and then it is a yellow card and in an injury a red card. McGregor should have been off. I am convinced if it had been at the other end Banks would have been off. I think we should adopt the rugby system with a sin bin.

13

vladsajambo,

14

Anglo Jambo,

Chorley 17/09/2007 11:58:41

No 10 you are right, it was 4-1-4-1 system, yet most referred it as a 4-5-1. The quality Nade has is he can take on defenders, draw free kicks and is able to hold up play until the midfield players link up. He doesn't have to score many goals as long as he is helping others to get them. Any player should be able to hit the target.

15

The Rangers goalie McGregor is a HUGE Jambo fan, I seen this clash and it was a coming together nothing more, no intent what so ever, perhaps ackward if anything.

However I agree the other two should have had an early bath.

Question for you! : What about the Sunday Mail (Rankers Weekend News) only giving us down as 3 shots on target to the Rankers 6? thought we scored 4? or do goals not count?

JJT.

Jam Tarts 1874,

It is also worth noting that our under 19's also pumped Rangers at the weekend (3-1).

I couldn't help noticing that Hearts started the game with 4 Scots and 2 Englanders, which is more British players than hibs started their effort in Falkirk with, we also brought on another Scotsman late in the game.

Only 2 Lithuanians, with one being subbed by another Lithuanian in the second half. It really is time that the followers of the wee team updated their record and stopped going on about Edinburgh's biggest and most successful team being full of Lithuanians.

Mon the Jambo's.

#14. Nade was also giving Rangers' back four terrible problems with their offside line. On one particular occassion Nade was simply too quick and clever, not only for the Rangers' defenders, but also for the idiot linesman on the standside who flagged him off when he was clearly miles on. I am sure it was just a mistake from the linesman.......

You are right, but don't let the fools on here, with their stupid comments get to you.

Did anyone notice on the Rangers substitutes bench their under 21s were two unknowns ( to me anyway)
Hearts bench had experienced players. That is why Smith wants to change the system, he should give more youngsters a chance

I agree re shots on target, the Scotland on Sunday gave it 8 - 4 in our favour, the Sunday times made it 7-4 in our favour and I saw another paper in a Cafe this morning that had it as 8-3. A few people mentioned today that some Glasgow papers had Rangers having more on target than us. Why is there such inconsistency? Is this not a point of fact? Are there not official stats by opta (or what every their called??) that all media outlets use? I've also noticed several different attendances printed varying by over 1000.

Here's hoping that Saturday was the start of a consistent line up for Hearts. Not going to harp on about the holding midfield role and preferred starter for this position as Zally was excellent on Saturday, so no complaints there.

I am hoping though for a reduced role for Miko, as IMO this upsets the balance of the team a bit.

A great bit of business by the Hibs to get £4m for Thompson and Whittaker. Thommo was lucky to stay on the park, indeed if there had been another 5 mins in the first half, he would've talked his way into a second yellow. Weir acted like a school prefect throughout the game, trying to be a sort of 4th official on the field of play, thankfully, I don't remember his acting like that when he played for us. McCost was right in front of me when Beasley threw a bitch slap at Robbie and Robbie tripped to the ground. McCoist screamed ya diving wee c*nt at Robbie, which incensed Shaggy. He retaliated with something along the lines of "less of the cheating shouts fatso" and McCoist went berserk much to the amusement of the support behind him. To be fair, he calmed down and even had a bit of banter after that.

A few comments here having a pop at Hearts, to put it into prespective, we beat a team that hadn't lost all season and we're rightly chuffed tae bits, no smugness, no boasting, just well-chuffed !!

36

Tynieweeguy,

17/09/2007 13:40:25

Davie Weir should have had any number of yellow cards for stirring the sh1t with the ref and manhandling him to try and get Hearts players sent off, mind you that was the only way he could see of beatin us. When we had the handbags in the middle of the pitch he just couldn't let it drop, trying to make it a bigger issue than it was. It was a disgusting performance by him.

I also agree with 1# McGregor should be brought to book over the Elliott "challenge" WS has been strangely silent over this unlike his comments over the Miko affair, double standards or what?

I was gobsmacked when I saw the result! I thought we had a chance, but honestly didn't think we could thrash Rankers at home on current form!

The Motherwell game gave us a big boost and the rest in Lithuania must have done them the world of good too!

Unbelievable week with Scotland winning in Paris and the Jambos sticking four past Rangers!

As a Jambo I'm chuffed and hope that we see more of the same over the next few games. No use being good against the terribel two if you can't put away Hibs and the rest!

What I would like to see next is some clarity over the managerial situation. I like many others am totally confused by who does what and this causes concern to the team and to Hearts fans alike. Simple communication is all that is required - come on Vlad.

As for Rangers? I wish them well in Europe as the better they do the better chance we will have of European football next year. I'm also not going to start slagging them off as they - along with Celtic and Hibs (and Hearts if you are good at genealogy) provided us with a team that produced an amazing evening against the French last week.

Marvellously witty post - only trouble is a quote from a guy on the radio on Saturday. "There is only one team here playing good football and it's not Rangers". Guess he must have been wrong then.

Love your name - named after a small , fat , be-wigged homosexual lunatic. Did you choose it for any specific reason ?

47

The Truth Hurts,

17/09/2007 15:03:41

In all seriousness, it was only a matter of time before this very average rangers team was found out for being exactly that, average. Despite the fanfares sounding from ibrox in regards to their recent signings, I think it's fair to say that uncle wattie has put together a squad of unexceptional players, whose main premise is to grind out results. The fact that rangers have racked up points by wearing down weak teams has perhaps led them into a false sense of security. Put up against a decent team (although Champions Celtic certainly showed that hearts are a limited outfit, albeit a decent limited outfit), this tactic was always going to be exploited.

48

JPF,

17/09/2007 15:03:52

Just one question - was it not the case on Saturday that after one Rangers goal (the penalty pehaps?) a rangers substitute went onto the field to get the ball out of the net? I thought this was highly illegal (Non-playing staff/subs entering the field) and was being actively clamped down on by the SFA? No?

Did anyone else see this? It would appear that one rule exists for rangers, and one rule for everyone else.

49

Lycanthropic Maroon,

17/09/2007 15:12:38

#50, There are many rules which exist for the OF, and others exist for everyone else. The OF have a whole rule book to themselves. It's not possible to get a look at this mystery rule book because it's custodians (the referee's association) are as secretive as organisations such as the bilderbergers or skull & bones.

The rules for the OF are 'flexible' shall we say?

50

51 - I know where you are coming from, but as regards penalties awarded etc, Rangers are in a league of their own. Check the stats.

I also notice that Gordon Strachan was reprimanded for entering the field of play - one of the reasons i thought there was some sort of clampdown going on.

To lose to HIbs 4-2 at easter Road is acceptable.

But to lose to an awful team that hasn't won in the league, has to be a little worrying for Rangers.

They'll be tougher games than this to come, and I'm not just talking about Barcelona and Stuttgart.

Walter Smith.

Walter yer an ERSE! and Ally 'Court Jester' McCoist you must be the highest paid mamory gland in Scotland

65 - you have won what? oh aye... one game.

Yeah - keep on celebrating. We'll see who's grinning at the end of the season... the Ibrox Fat Cats, or the working class jacobite losers from Gorgie, Parkhead, or Pittodrie.

Ally is an Ibrox Legend - he is there to amuse all the media, and smooth the clubs way in the press. If you notice, there aren't many negative Gers stories thanks to some good 'Media Management' from Sir David and his cohorts. Compare that to sticking Stevie Frail in front of a microphone as he is the only guy who can speak English and you will see that we are truly leagues ahead of everyone off the field.

#68, no, more likely most of the press, or at least a majority of them have leanings towards your club, and have a nice little cosy relationship with anything to do with you, and your good mates Ceptic. Obviously Sally Mcmoist is just a complete media goon, all smiles and jokes, it makes it all so easy for you and your press lovies to get along in some kind of horrific, incestious, relationship. Pass the sick bucket.

Plus, have gullible idiots like you lapping it up helps as well.

You can bleat on about what goes on off the park, I'd prefer to stick to the subject here, and look what happend on it on Saturday, 4-2, now get along you fool, you've been done and you can't take it.

Laz J. No lazy journo.

Listen guys and gals, I watched the Hearts game. Mr Smith really cocked it up big time. After he reaslied what a shocker his selection was, Rangers were , well, they played not too badly. So I do not think that they played as bad as all the hype suggests. Stay cool. What we Scots are good at. (Aye right).

Now then the CL; I would suggest that the Jungle Jims, the smellick or whatever one calls them these days, just lay back a wee bit more and realise that this mob are no mugs. They are the uber SPL; far and away better than the best of the rest. So just stay cool. What we Scots are good at.

And the (what IS one allowed to call them) Huns, the Orcs, the TFODs', they did not play as badly as every one says they did. Mr Smith completely effed this one up.

So lets hear it for the co-efficient. Mr Gordon Smith has just realised that Dunfermline and Gretna getting gubbed by the Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, in Europe, is just the same as the (gosh I hate this word) the OF getting gubbed by Shaktar, Benfica et al.

So lets hear it for the Scottish nation, for we shall be a nation again and did Paris not fill your hearts up guys and gals.

Lets hear it for Aberdeen, Celtic and Rangers in Europe this year..........

68 - Cumberland sausage - Aye, Fanny MaGroin is there to amuse all the media. What with that funny high pitched west coast drone of voice, the only person that thinks he is amusing is himself. The priamry reason to turn off Question of Sport.

Rangers were humped, you canny dress it up any other way. Take it like the bitter inbred you so obviously are.

68- William Cumberland I hope all Rangers fans have more brains than you. All you can do is insult the other teams in the league. If it were not for them there wouldnt be a Rangers team. Its time to grow up and accept that all teams get a going over now and again, but after their defeat against the Hearts I will look forward with great pleasure to seeing them getting stuffed again his week. Then maybe you will CRAWL back into the HOLE you came out of and hide.By the way Rangers youth system must be crap when they have to build a team from players bought from other teams in the SPL. PLONKER.

# 68- William Cumberland

Oh, and by the way, have you conveniently forgotten that our second team humped your second team off the park 3 - 1?????

Youth system??

Rankgers survive on poaching the best Scottish talent as cheaply as possible.

Murray has your lot £100m in debt, you will get humped in the CL and will win F all for the third year in a row.

Bye Bye you bitter inbred Hun

PS McCoist was nothing more than a penalty box diver and the biggest cheat of his generation.
