FBK KAUNAS defender Mantas Fridrikas will seek discussions with Vladimir Romanov over a prospective move to Hearts when the Russian entrepreneur returns from a family holiday this weekend.
Fridrikas, 20, is keen to leave Lithuania to further develop his career abroad. Following talk that a trial period at Riccarton is in the pipeline he is eager to speak with Romanov, whose Ukio Bankas Investment Group finances both Kaunas and Hearts.

Romanov returns to Lithuania on Saturday following his family's traditional New Year break and Fridrikas hopes to gain clarity on his future with a face-to-face meeting.

Speaking exclusively to the Evening News, he said: "Nobody has told me when I will come to Edinburgh so I have no idea. Maybe it will happen this month, next month or maybe in summer. I hope it is this month but Mr Romanov is on holiday now. When he comes back I will try to talk with him.

"Maybe he will come and speak to me about Scotland and about Hearts. I want to play in another country, Scotland or somewhere else. I like the UK and it would be good to play there. I know about Hearts, I know the squad is very good, they have a good trainer and the atmosphere is very good right now."

The Kaunas squad returned to training on Monday following the Lithuanian winter break, and Fridrikas is determined to improve his fitness in anticipation of leaving the A Lyga for pastures new.

"I want to get fit, improve my form and then move to play in a better club, maybe in Scotland. I don't know whether it will happen now or later but I want to be ready," he said.

Hearts travel to Fir Park this evening for a rescheduled SPL fixture in which Calum Elliot could return to first-team duty following a successful loan at Livingston. Christos Karipidis and Larry Kingston are major doubts but Polish midfielder Adrian Mrowiec returns to the squad.

Having incurred the wrath of Motherwell supporters during a previous loan spell in Lanarkshire, Elliot believes he has much to prove after also enduring criticism from Hearts fans last season.

"It will be interesting to see who I get the better reception from," he said. "Although I'll probably get some stick, I'll have to try and ignore it.

"If the Hearts fans are behind me then I can do the business if I get a chance. In a way, I maybe have to prove them wrong now. As a young boy it was difficult to hear some of the stick. Hopefully, it's made me stronger."

Elliot will miss Hearts' league matches against Kilmarnock and Inverness on January 17 and 24 respectively after incurring a two-match suspension while at Livingston.

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo revealed that Bruno Aguiar may be available for Sunday's Scottish Cup Edinburgh derby at Easter Road.

The influential Portuguese has missed the last two matches with a hamstring complaint.

I dont know much about the player, but I do hope Csaba has a major say in the loan / transfer not just Vlad. If so, then Im willing to give the lad a chance. Lets face it - he cant be worse than Barasa.

Mad Max - oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

20 year old good prospect in my opinion. At least we are getting linked with players in this transfer window.

All Hibs will go on about is how he is another Lithuanian but at the end of the day they are signing an over the hill ex Rangers striker and playing him in midfield.

Silly silly boys, i'll reiterate for the hard of reading.

what does it matter that lithuania are above Finland in the World rankings? Does this make JJ a bad player and the Lith a better player?

By that Logic signing a player from any country beneath Lithuania in the world rtankings is embarassing.

I never asked about how many nationalities hearts had playing for them or indeed how many were under 21 so you are correct that is completely unrelated.

Sad news about Alfie Conn. Still 82 good innings

It's always made me laugh that Hibees talk disparagingly about Lithuania and footballers from there when many of their own players come from countries with worse records at international level.

It is xenophobic and this focus on nationality and skin colour is an ugly side of an increasing number of Hibs supporters. I think I preferred them as a group when their main problem was "just" all the casuals in pringle jumpers acting up (and that's just their players). I blame their rising panic that maybe Hearts won't go belly up after all.

I more amused at the current Hibs trend to be inventive with players names and numbers on the back of jerseys. We've had "Benji", "01" for the Rat and now "JJ" for Johansson.

Hibs fans lap it up, but just like coloured footie boots, shouldn't these gimmicks be reserved for players who are actually any good?!

Newcastle Jambo,

I don't mean this to be in any way racist, but I do feel that we've had a procession of Lithuanian players through the club and the vast majority haven't been good enough for the SPL.

There are exceptions - Janauskis, Zaliukas (after a ropey start), Velicka and Chesny. Some were experienced players (Barasa) who even journalists noted did not appear to be professional footballers.

I'm encouraged by the signing of Black and some of the names mentioned so far but am concerned that if Berra goes and if Zaliukas is sold for £1m (to Kaunas not Hearts) they should not be replaced by an untried 20 year old Lithuanian. At best this guy could be a squad player if he really is that good but we already have promising youngsters for that position.

If there is any ambition to qualify for Europe, we need some experienced players to build the team around. Just my view.

RIP Alfie Conn, immortal Hearts legend.

BazJT,

#62 'At best this guy could be a squad player if he really is that good'. Your glass really is half empty isn't it.

Glad you've not been picking Hearts teams over the years then as we've had a succession of young defenders coming through at an early age and saving us a few bob in transfer fees in the process. By all accounts this boy is highly sought after but we get first dibs due to connections. We should be thinking the best for these players coming through.

Not even in the door yet and we've got Hearts fans saying he's not good enough ! Everyone deserves a chance.

#66 Of course Rapnik and also the Australian lad McGowan. And we know Jonsson and Karapidis can play there and are top class (and not Scottish).

I'm just saying we don't need another youngster for that position if Berra and Zaliukas are sold (as is likely). I'd rather hear that an experienced player was coming in, preferbly with experience of playing in a competitive league.
49

Newcastle Jambo,

07/01/2009 16:26:59
#68 I agree with you, there are lots of positives. I really do think though that if we do lose Berra and Zaliukas we need some experience in that crucial position and a 20 year old from a poor league may be a good prospect (and so will be welcomed) but that won't be enough to bridge the gap.

The young defenders who have been outstanding over the years (Levein, McLaren, Ritchie, Webster, Berra) have had experienced players to guide them (Jardine, McPherson, Weir, Bruno, Pressley). You need a balance.
50

huggs,

07/01/2009 16:31:16
NJ No one is saying he is going to come and walk into the first team but i would still like to have him then he and Rapnik can play together and push each other

51

Newcastle Jambo,

#71 "No one is saying he is going to come and walk into the first team". True, Romanov seems to have stopped doing that for the moment.

That is one huge positive and is something that we used to take for granted (i.e. that a manager would decide who was good enough to be signed and who should be in the team, rather than a non-football, absentee owner).
52

Newcastle Jambo,

07/01/2009 16:54:24
#73 Fair point. I did fear back in 2005 that Hearts would simply become a vehicle for selling on Lithuanian players. By all accounts that's why Dundee Utd and Dunfermline turned Romanov's offer of investment down before Foulkes welcomed him in.

So far it hasn't worked out that way which is a relief. In saying that, this is largely as there haven't been any offers to buy any Lithuaians as yet, with the exception of Velicka. Romanov's main business strategy has been to sell the young players who were already here.

I really don't care where players are from as long as they are good enough and they can communicate with each other.
