RAIL services to and from Edinburgh returned to normal today after a derailment disrupted services for more than three days.
Commuters faced massive disruption after services on key routes were cancelled following the incident, in which three carriages travelling at low speed came off the tracks.

The carriages, which were empty at the time, were being manoeuvred into Waverley station to form part of last Thursday's 11.40pm sleeper to London.

Hydraulic lifting gear was used to lift the carriages back on to the track and an investigation was launched into the incident.

There was widespread chaos last week as trains between Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street were reduced from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes.

The Fife circle service was cut from four trains an hour to two and trains from Dunblane and Bathgate terminated at Haymarket. The Edinburgh to Cowdenbeath service was suspended and Glasgow Central trains to Waverley were starting and terminating at Slateford.

"Back to Normal" - as in 25 minutes late into work this morning due to "track circuit problems in the Aberdour area". First Group and Network Rail are a bunch of jokers who should be kicked out in short order and someone who can run the railways (that's the difficult bit!) brought in asap.

No doubt First Scotrail are busy drafting the usual self-congratulating press release on how well they handled the crisis. Probably no mention of the shambolic scenes as a bunch of late night passengers had to tell the coach driver how to find their stations on Friday night after being kicked off a train onto a coach at Inverkeithing for no apparent reason, then.

Presumably we'll be getting a couple of free days added to the season tickets then? Thought not...

And many rush hours trains to Glasgow from Edinburgh were only delayed by 40 minutes so nothing abnormal there

25 minutes late, pah.

Normal for Edinburgh-Glasgow commuters this morning meant the cancellation of the 8:00 and 8:15 trains with the next train, 8:30, leaving 13 minutes late.

No reasons were being given out. One Scotrail employee I asked said that is was just a late service.

Though I did notice that after 9:00 Scotrail did report signalling problems in Edinburgh which had caused the usual reversion to a half hourly service.

More than an hour to come up with a reason, things must be slow after the festive break.

"Normal", these days on the railways in Edinburgh, seems to mean a never-ending chaotic mix of disruption because of lineside equipment failures and trains falling off the track. Years of neglect and under investment are bearing poison fruit.

The current very minor investment in Waverley is better than nothing, but lets face it - the tracks and signals are worn out and long overdue for replacement.
