Scotland boss is on the brink

IT is no longer a question of if Berti Vogts’ time as Scotland boss is about to come to an end, it now merely seems a question of when.

The Scottish Football Association insist that no decision on the future of Vogts is expected until Thursday.

The board members are not due to meet until November 4 as the first Thursday of every month is a regular slot for the 11 power-brokers to get together.

An SFA spokesman said: "We wouldn’t envisage anything before Thursday."

But speculation suggested that the German’s two-and-a-half-year tenure would come to an end this week ahead of the Easter Road friendly with Sweden on November 17.

It is claimed that Vogts and the Hampden Park chiefs will go their separate ways to allow time for them to appoint a new boss, with former Rangers and Everton manager Walter Smith and Gordon Strachan in the frame.

The under-fire Vogts has been a lame duck since the 1-1 draw in Moldova, which meant qualification for the 2006 World Cup finals was unlikely. That disappointing result came on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Norway at Hampden and a 0-0 draw at home to Slovenia - the game which kicked off qualification.
