COMPETITION watchdogs today announced plans to order BAA to sell Edinburgh Airport to new owners.
The Competition Commission said having Edinburgh and Glasgow airports under different ownership would make them both more responsive to customers.

But the announcement sparked fears that the sale could attract a low-cost airport operator who would not invest in the same high standard of facilities.

The Competition Commission said that, subject to final consultation, it would require BAA to sell Gatwick and Stansted airports as well. It expects to publish its final report in February or March.

The commission had warned it wanted BAA to sell one of its two main Scottish airports to improve competition, but its decision to specify Edinburgh as the one to be sold came as a surprise.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, said: "The Commission has not provided any substantial evidence to support its view that Edinburgh and Glasgow would compete under separate ownership, and we believe there is no justification for specifying which of these airports should be sold. We will continue to make our case to the Competition Commission."

An aviation source said Edinburgh airport would sell for well over £1 billion.

Graham Birse, deputy chief executive of Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said he did not understand the logic of the commission's decision.

He said: "The competition issues are very different from those in London. Surely it would be for BAA to decide which of the airports it would prefer to dispose of."

And he said he thought BAA were more likely to have opted to sell Glasgow.

"The issue for the business community in Edinburgh is the maintenance of high quality of service, the attraction of direct routes and the improvement of infrastructure round the airport. BAA's performance has been quite impressive.

"But if you open it up to the highest bidder, a different type of owner might come along who operates a low-cost model with the airport simply providing facilities to airline at the lowest available cost."

Tom Buchanan, the city council's economic development convener,

said: "It's vital to the city, to the region and to the country that Edinburgh has an excellent international airport. In Scotland, Edinburgh has the most business traffic and is busiest by passenger volume, and we need that to continue for the health of our economy.

"We'll be examining the commission's findings in detail and working with our partners to make the strongest possible case for the continued growth and success of Edinburgh airport."

But Tom Dalrymple, chairman of Edinburgh-based airline flyglobespan welcomed the ruling.

He said: "There is no doubt that an element of competition had to be introduced.

"Latest BAA figures show over 20 million passengers a year pass through the three Scottish airports and you can understand why the Competition Commission believe that one company looking after the interests of so many people in such a relatively small geographical area might not be in everyone's best interest."

This may actually be very good news for Edinburgh Airport - not being run by BAA has certainly not done Manchester Airport any harm - a bit of competition can actually have a positive outcome. Edinburgh is a far superior airport to Glasgow anyway!

1 Its not just the airport that's superior to Glasgow to be honest, the position of the Airport is perfect to serve the whole of the central belt from the east side of glasgow eastwards

Who is going to buy them??
BAA is a subsidiary of a Spanish firm.
I agree about the comments that it is not right for the commission to specify that they must sell Edinburgh. What is it? Is there one of Labour's Champagne Billionaires standing in the wings ready to buy it.

i suggest the gold brothers can buy edinburgh airport. the concorses can be turned into a tartan flea market and tourist can use the horse drawn trams to get to the centre of edinburgh to buy trinkets from the mass ranks of the unemployed in 2009.

What a surprise..... BAA tell TIE to stick their tram up their chorus-and verse, and a Labour apparatchik tells them to sell-off an asset vital to the future prosperity of this city.
This decision must be challenged..... NOW !!
In my view this is a party-politically motivated ruling designed to specifically harm the future growth of Edinburgh, and I am, generally, a supporter of Labour, but this reeks of the Labour "West-Coast mafia" protecting their interests at the expense of everyone else.

Whoever buys it... the first thing they'll do is put up prices in order to recover their investment as quickly as possible (this is what Ferrovial did)

and how is edinburgh "superior" has glasgow not one a good few award's?
does glasgow not have a better selection of international route's and not cheap low cost flight's europe.
to me most people in edinburgh got it into there heads that edinburgh airport was untouchable.
either way it cant be good for either airport as which ever airport is sold whoever buy's they are going to try and under cut the other meaning someone is going to suffer?

hopefully we can get better destinations to travel to, at the moment the choice is limited as they divy up routes between the Edi/Gla or make you go via London.

It could work out great for travellers.

As a regular trveller I object to the Competition Commission deciding what is in my best interest without consulting me!

In the last few years there has been significant investment in both Edinburgh and Glasgow by BAA. Both have seen passenger numbers grow as services improved and as one of those frequent passengers who use Edinburgh I have been more than satisfied with the services provided.

I have never considered Glasgow as an alternative on the basis of price- even if the fares were lower I don't think I would choose to go all the way from my home in Edinburgh city centre to Glasgow simply because it is just not convenient for me. The fares would need to be spectacularly different and I doubt that will ever happen, no matter who owns it!

In response to the previous readers comments that "at the moment the choice is limited as they divy up routes between the Edi/Gla or make you go via London" I have in the last year taken a dozen trips (including South America, Eastern and Central Europe) none of which required me to transit through London. In fact, of all the trips I've taken this year the only reason I've flown to London is because that was my actual destination!

If this requirement to sell Edinburgh is in the interest of the public then shouldn't we have a say in it?

#14 Edinburgh Airport is rubbish, a direct result of the BAA deciding that the London Airports would serve the UK market (in other words everyone HAS to fly through London to get anywhere = ££££££), and Glasgow would serve Scotland. Edinburgh was to be a backwater airport. Much to BAA's surprise however Edinburgh is now busier than Glasgow, despite a VERY resticted choice of flights. The facilities at Edinburgh is poor, no direct rail link for starters, and a joke single carriageway access road. The BAA REFUSED point blank to contribute a penny towards upgrading the transport links, yet contributed over £100 million towards the London Crossrail project.
The best thing to happen to EDI is for BAA to get its shackles off it !

I do hope that if Edinburgh Airport is sold off, they will retain the good access and help for people with the need of a wheelchair, its far better than is Heathrow which is a disgrace by any measure, we experienced this problem this past September, next time we will be flying via Amsterdam avoiding Heathrow all together! When we come home to Haymarket, the loss to BA is not nice as I do find them a good Airline, the service that BAA sucks!
