Parking rules are Poles apart

IT is an example of the power of diplomacy.
Staff at the Polish Consulate on Kinnear Road, Inverleith, were hit with a traffic nightmare after parking restrictions were introduced nearby.

But, while ordinary residents have been left to battle with commuters to find a space outside their homes, the consulate went straight to the top.

And now Edinburgh City Council is set to reserve three spaces on the leafy street for the Polish staff. The street is just outside the controlled parking zone and is inundated with commuters leaving their cars before getting a bus into the city centre.

The dedicated consular spaces are set to be in place next month.

The Polish consulate today defended the ruling, claiming the move was necessary because of the activity of its diplomats.

But Tory group leader Iain Whyte, whose Inverleith ward includes the Polish consulate, said they should not be considered ahead of residents.

He said: "This is an area which we have been told, in time, will be included in the controlled parking zone to tackle this problem of commuter parking.

"I have no objection to the consulate getting reserved spaces but all I ask is that residents who are also suffering from the same problems as the consulate are treated fairly as well.

"Why does it take three to four months to get this sorted out but residents in the same street are looking at two years for a controlled parking zone?"

The majority of Edinburgh's consulates and embassies are in the city centre and as such they are not entitled to reserved parking spaces because of the pressure on the number of spaces.

However, consul generals in the city are permitted to leave their cars, which have special licence plates, in pay-and-display bays free of charge.

Alexander Ditkow, consul general of the Polish consulate, said "There is a strange situation where our street is the first street free of charge after the parking zone, so we have a lot of people from out of town parking in our street.

"This means it is not possible for our diplomats to find spaces so this is why we have asked for the spaces outside."

The Inverleith controlled parking zone was introduced a year ago.

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "A request for diplomatic parking bays received from the Polish Consulate was considered and no objections were lodged when this application was advertised publicly. The street in question is located outwith the controlled parking zone and an assessment of the road outside the consulate building found that providing these spaces was unlikely to impinge on residential parking, as nearby houses have off-road parking space."

Simple enough solution---scrap the ridiculous parking restrictions.

I would agree with getting rid of these greedy restrictions. Before the restrictions were introduced it was very difficult to get a space but now, many free spaces.
It's very easy to say get a bus, alas I live outside town, buses are rubbish, one can wait for ages, timetables are a waste of time, on many occasions I can cycle quicker than the bus!

You fell for this non story, hook, line and sinker. The last paragraph of the article says it all. they asked for permission, no member of the public objected, so their request was granted. So, what is the problem?
But then, I know, you weren't serious when you wrote your post, were you?

The diplomats should get in earlier if they want the choice parking spaces.

#7 Exactly, its a non story, even Macin, a Pole, agrees. Why are we given this steady stream of nonsense about Poland and its citizens almost every day ? if it was the Irish, French, Australian whatever embassy then this would never make the news.

Does this mean that the residents of all the streets that are now full of commuters parking their cars there should simply get dual nationality, claim diplomatic need and ask for a reserved place in front of their own house?

Show me the way................

Why has the Polish consulacy been highlighted in this story ? If you care to check you will see that the consulacies of other nationalities also have applied for and received the same treatment. However the EEN never moaned, complained or ran stories about these ?
Rampant racism I call it.
The diplomatic staff of ALL nations are afforded special status in many spheres, and this is reciprocated by these nations, by affording the same rights and priviliges to UK diplomats in their countries. So why the difference when it comes to the Polish case ?????????

Here we go again, knocking the Polish community.

In this case, she would recive the rights & benefits afforded to ANY citizen of the EU, she could be French, Irish, German Italian etc etc etc etc.

Her nationality would be immaterial, the only thing that would be of consequence was her belonging to the EU, same os if she were an UK citizen in the Poland.

jeeeez, I'm scunnered

Kudos to posters here for not falling for this one. The consulate has received the same treatment as other countries' consulates. Well done to everyone for not jumping on the knee-jerk, BNP style bandwagon.

#26, Sunny Jim, your comment deserves two rosettes (and a groan).

The provision of parking spaces is nothing more than a deserved courtesy extended to diplomats representing their country in Scotland.

I am sure the Polish representatives will not abuse the privilege.

lalalalala lets all blame the poles, who take on the worst paid hardest jobs that the scum at the top of the high rises in the calders would never want to risk their benifits doing. at least the poles are polite and hard working. even if it does seem like theres more o them than there are o us... o.O

Kinnear Road is in the heart of the Edinburgh Academy snobby area. Glad they're getting some hassle. They're no better than they should be!

quite right, just remember folks, if it wasn't for the Poles, we wouldn't have have become involved in WW2. You folk have short memories, shame on you - is 3 parking places too much to ask ?

#4 Big carbon footprint

"Before the restrictions were introduced it was very difficult to get a space but now, many free spaces"

So we've gone from having a shortage of spaces to a surplus. That#s surely a good thing isn't it?

#17 ROADSTOHELL,

Just interested but who are these other consulates who have been given their own spaces outside the controlled zone?

Looking at the photo there is enough space in front of the building to make a car park. Dig it up and solve the problem!!!
