A WORKER at Edinburgh Zoo, who downloaded hundreds of pornographic images of children from the Internet, was turned in to the police by his flatmate.
Benjamin Hughes accessed 376 paedophile images of young girls on his flatmate's computer.

Almost 100 of the images were described as being at the worst two levels of a scale up to five by Fiscal Depute Lynne Barrie.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court he
ard Hughes had shared a flat in the city's Bellevue Crescent with two others while working as a receptionist at the zoo. Flatmate Nadine Arber allowed him to use her computer. He often logged on to sites when the others were asleep.

"Miss Arber was attempting to create more memory space," Miss Barrie told Sheriff Kenneth MacIver. "She went into Hughes' folders and found a file called "child porn". She confronted Hughes who denied it."

She later found a virus and again went through folders made by Hughes, 24, and uncovered pictures of naked girls under 16. She immediately contacted the police who interviewed Hughes. No action was taken, but when Miss Arber found four video clips of children involved in sex acts she called police again. Officers took the computer away for analysis and found the 376 images.

Sheriff MacIver ordered Hughes him to register as a sex offender and deferred sentence for background reports.

Did I miss the part where Hughes went to trial and it was proved he did this or can you just be ordered to register as a sex offender by the Sheriff?

Personally I think the best way to deal with scum like this who are convicted of child porn/abuse,is to put them in a room with 10 women with baseball bats (or weapons of their choice)These women would not be liable for any prosecution
If the offender survives put them into prison,in with the mainstream population not on segregation.
Also the following quote from the article begs the question Why was no action taken? Perhaps this is something the EEN would like to ask the relevant authority to explain
"folders made by Hughes, 24, and uncovered pictures of naked girls under 16. She immediately contacted the police who interviewed Hughes. No action was taken,"
Take care
Be Happy

sea toad, a "Sheriff" in Scotland is basically a judge, unlike sheriffs in the USA.

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheriff_Court

This person has clearly been found guilty as charged and Sheriff MacIver has ordered him to be registered as a sex offender, and has deffered sentence for background reports.

With any luck, the Sheriff will impose a sentence similar to that suggested by c mains hibby!

#1: The lions wouldn't touch him. They have better sense.

#3: I'm kind of with you, as I didn't see anywhere in the article (such as it was) that he had even been charged, let alone remanded for trial.

#3 Sea Toad You make a fair point But my assumption earlier was you referred to the reporting (it is the EEN after all Not always renowned for it`s cutting edge or accurate reporting)Rather than the judical system
If not i would suggest you refer to post#5 which is not quite fully accurate (it is Wikpedia after all)But does give a basic understanding of the differences between jury trial and trial by a judge
