THOUSANDS of anti-Trident campaigners took to the city's streets at the weekend in a protest against the nuclear missile system.
Demonstrators had gathered outside the Scottish Parliament at noon before marching up the Royal Mile.

They then attended a rally in Princes Street Gardens where SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville read out a message of support from First Minister Alex Salmond. It said: "The position of the Scottish Government is clear - we are opposed to the replacement of the Trident system and the deployment of weapons of mass destruction on Scottish soil."

The Lothians MSP added: "We want Scotland to be a force for peace, not a storage depot for weapons of mass destruction."

Isobel Lindsay, convener of Scotland's for Peace, the group which organised the protest, said: "Scotland has a real opportunity to make a decisive contribution to disarmament by stopping the replacement of Trident."

Well said, and a true statement, but obviously all the liberal wishy washy greens would rather be put to the sword by undemocratic loons like china, russia etc.

There are far more useful ways to spend > £20 billion on defence. For a start, the government admits to a several £billion backlog on service accommodation. Then we could ensure all troops have the right gear for all theatres of war, no more using their own money for body armour and desert boots. Then there's the radio comms systems....and so on, and so on. If I were in the Forces I'd be eagerly demanding a "non-Trident dividend".

#1 #2 So what do you think China's going to do to us if we don't keep Nukes.....?

If we do keep them of course we'll have to ask the USA first for permission to use them - and once we've asked permission we'll bomb China and everything will be OK... get a brain...

......In the meantime we'll have spent another £75 billion, at least, but we'll still not have any money when it comes to Schools, Hospitals, OAPs etc. etc.

They're a necessary evil.

No doubt the mass majority of those who oppose Trident are SNP supporters and SNP MSP's.

With things like the MOAB you don't need Nuclear weapons anymore.

Smoke and mirrors.

Why do we actually need to buy them - why don't we just put on a show of "something" being delivered, then send unarmed submarines out on patrol every three months.

The whole point is they are a deterent - watch Yes, Prime Minister - "We know that they know that we probably won't use them, but they don't know that we know they know".

We lose our weapons, and somebody attacks us - what do we do then? hee haw is what we could do, and then, we would be the bad ones.....

agree with #1 - look at what they have done in S Koria... testing, and then we have Russia.... this world is not a nice place, but if we do not arm ourself with weapons to protect ourself, we would basicly have a neon sign above the UK to say "attack us, we are unarmed"

#10 "attack us, we are unarmed"!!!

So they'll attack us - just like they attack Sweden, Switzerland, Eire, Mexico......... all non-nuclear and obviously in great danger.... I think Darren should warn them of the great peril they've been living in for the past half century.... doh!

I can see the headline now

POLICE TO BE ARMED WITH TRIDENT MISSILES

Well, it would certainly clear up the crime rate!!! And every other living thing within 300 miles!!

It's a pity that Guy Fawkes didn't have Trident missiles!!!

#11 spiggot - you clearly dont see that Russia, have been sending planes over to our waters. All it takes, is one of their ARMED planes, to fire, and its started. We dont have weapons, we cant defend ourself.

Its like a soldier without a gun, with a gun he can defend himself, without it, he can only run and hide. Problem being a country, is we cant hide the united kingdom....
