THE Naked Rambler, Stephen Gough, has been jailed for three months for contempt of court.
Sheriff Katherine Mackie was today told by the 48-year old's lawyer, John Good, that his client was refusing to dress for his appearance before her.

Gough had previously been found guilty of contempt on four occasions by different sheriffs in Edinburgh when he repeatedly refused to put on clothes for court appearances.

Apart from a few minutes of freedom, Gough has spent nearly 19 months in Saughton Prison since May 2006. When released, he refuses to dress and is arrested when he enters a public area.

Ah Bristo,

#1 Maybe so, but it doesn't give him the right to parade it it public ;-)

Leave the man alone. What harm is he doing?

4

Bored,

Just think of the cash he has saved on rent.

Question.
Does he wander round prison naked?
Is that wise?

Exile him to the Ooter Hebrides.
He'll soon get dressed.

Does he get a shorter sentence because it's winter?

Given that we are freeing murders early due to overcrowding, better use could have been made of this space in the prison.

The man should be dressed - nobody wants to see his a*se and dangly bits.

Its all Eves fault if she hadn't eaten from the ree of knowledge then Mr Gough would be free to wander without hassle from the authorities.

Psychiatric ward is where he should be.

11

Finbarr Saunders,

He should be bundled into a prison van and let out at the border the next time he's set free.

Dreamnine,

This pervert has clearly decided that jail suits him- why bother even taking him to court?

Getting lifted as soon as he leaves Saughton hardly makes him a rambler.Perhaps we should call his escapades the naked two step.

I agree No 11 he comes from the South of England Southsea I believe, dump him at Carlisle or Berwick and let him make his own way home. It would be money well spent dumping him there, instead of providing free board and lodgings at our expense.

15

Boy Wonder,

He's a sick man, who should be sectioned for his own sake.

#11 and #15
Are you suggesting the authorities should be lawfully permitted to bundle people in vans and take them against their will to some place they don't want to be taken to and dumped? I take it this could be applied to anyone we feel a bit offended by then.
Why can't he just be transferred to a prison near to where he comes from to serve his sentence. Doesn't that happen all the time.

How much money is being spent on this buff oon?Police time, lawyers, justiciary, secure transport, food, warders, prison supervision, the list goes on. All because of some fetish behaviour.
Let him ramble where he wants all year round.
If it is felt he really causes offence to the public then perhaps his dangly bits could be surgically removed and he can continue rambling 'till his hearts content.

The Daleks,

The man is clearly off his rocker.

I agree with the bold Boy Wonder, on this one.

#8 Isabel,

Maybe nobody wants to see you in public. Does that mean you should be jailed as well?

21

Julian,

Dalek, Boy Wonder, James(1)

I'm beginning to think you guys are right. Maybe this guy is mentally ill. Mind you, that or appearing naked in public are not offences which should send you to prison in my opinion.

If you watched the documentary last year you would see most people he met were very easy-going about his dress sense.

One thing I was wondering. If you released the guy on a day when it was minus 20 with windchill would he not put some clothes on? I mean he would die otherwise. Maybe they should check the forecast and time his next court appearance accordingly.

22

Exiled Leither,

01/12/2007 08:27:21

How is he a pervert? he is not doing this for any kind of sexual gratification, he is not harming anyone, and why should he be embarrased by his body. perhaps if we all took his stance and dressed as nature intended we would solve a lot of problems like teenage girls getting ill to fit into designer clothes etc.
He should be let go now and let wonder about as he pleases.

Thank God for people like Stephen Gough. He appears to be the only sane person mentioned in this story.
