DEREK Riordan's eighth goal of the season wasn't enough to earn Hibs victory as Motherwell came storming back to deservedly claim a point with a second half penalty from David Clarkson.
Riordan gave the home side the lead after just seven minutes but Mixu Paatelainen's players found themselves under increasing pressure after the interval and finally cracked when substitute Steven Thicot was adjudged to have pulled back Jamie Murphy
15 minutes from the end.

Riordan got Hibs off to the perfect start, rifling the ball into the net from 14 yards after Denes Rosa's pass had found Ross Chisholm's run, the little midfielder cutting the ball back for his striker to thump it home first time.

The Easter Road pitch was showing little improvement from a fortnight ago when the surface was roundly condemned and a swirling wind didn't improve things for either set of players although, that Riordan goal apart, it was Motherwell who held the upperhand in the early stages.

However, despite their superior possession, the Fir Park outfit were unable to trouble Grzegorz Szamotulski in the Hibs goal, the Pole being perfectly positioned to collect efforts from Stevie Hammell and Jim O'Brien before a long clearance from skipper Rob Jones saw Riordan beat the visitors' offside trap only for the strong wind to carry the ball out of his reach.

Quick-thinking by Rosa, the Hungarian spotting Riordan in space as he took a throw-in almost caused further problems for Motherwell but the Hibs striker found himself crowded out long before he could get his shot away.

Szamotulski kept Hibs level in the 58th minute, getting down well to push aside a low shot from Clarkson before a fantastic ball out of defence from Rosa set Riordan free. Rosa, however, wasn't content at that, racing 70 yards to support the striker who spotted his run.

Rosa attempted to chip Motherwell goalkeeper Graeme Smith but, alas, his effort drifted wide before Riordan caught a shot on the volley from 18 yards only to see the Fir Park No 1 push the ball away.

Hibs again were badly in need of a second goal, a point which was emphasised in the 69th minute when Clarkson caught Chris Hogg trying to run the ball over his own bye-line, his cut-back finding Murphy who contrived to drive wide from only eight yards.

It was becoming very much backs-to-the-wall stuff for Hibs as the game approached the final 15 minutes, Paul Quinn bringing out the best in Szamotulski as he burrowed his way deep into the home side's penalty area only for the Pole to bring off a tremendous save.

But even Szamotulski had to admit defeat in the 75th minute after Motherwell were awarded a penalty as referee Mike McCurry ruled Thicot, who had replaced Chisholm at half-time, had pulled back Murphy, Clarkson stepping up to blast home the spot-kick and level the score and leave Hibs hanging on grimly for the final whistle.

Hibs: Szamotulski, McCormack (van Zanten 71), Hogg, Jones, Hanlon, Rankin, Chisholm (Thicot 46), Stevenson, Rosa, Nish (Keenan 60), Riordan. Subs not used: McNeil, Yantorno, A O'Brien, Johansson.

Motherwell: G Smith, Quinn, Craigan, Reynolds, Hammell, Klimpl, Hughes, J O'Brien, Fitzpatrick (Murphy 64), Sutton (D Smith 64), Clarkson. Subs not used: Krysiak, Malcolm, Lasley, McGarry, McHugh.

Referee: Mike McCurry.

"Riordan's perfect start wasted..."

As,indeed,is the career of every decent footballer at Hibs, under Mad Mix.

Motherwell had 61% of the game, that tells me more than i need to know, mixu is killing us slowly and as a life long hibs fan i feel enough is enough, farmer, petrie and mixu need to go, lets get fresh new headshed in, because at the moment we have not moved forward but backwards to the days of the 80s

Sharp intake of breath here, readers...
I'd even have the woefully inept and catastrophic Blobby Williamson back at the helm!!
Well..not really, but the idea acts as a benchmark, and illustrates just how bad Paatelainen is.
Clueless in all departments, and at all levels.

You're right. I AM having a larf.
But I wonder just how much more time he's going to be given in the light of his appalling performance to date, and how much more damage he's going to in that time.
I'm scared..very scared...as we all should be!
11

John Robertson,

31/01/2009 19:15:29
The way i see it is that Tom Farmer should sell the club, lets be honest it would not take a great deal of money to buy , little or no debt, own training ground, stadium etc, we need to be taken forward, all the signs are there for this, appart from on the pitch. We could get another manager in, but we know what will happen, maybe get a good few results, finish top 3rd or 4th even a cup if were lucky, however with the club being run as it has been over these last few years we will keep on the same track to nowhere.

True...It's not just Mixu.
As I posted on another thread a few days back, Petrie has now become as complicit in this downward spiral of Hibs' fortunes, by refusing to acknowledge and address the issues. And as you say, as long as Farmer and Petrie remain in situ, another manager will just end up failing as spectacularly, or jumping ship, as Collins did.
Time for new blood.

"lets be honest it would not take a great deal of money to buy , little or no debt, own training ground, stadium etc"

surely all those things you listed would make it dearer, not cheaper to buy? you're probably talking £20m I'd reckon. clubs are only cheap if they are IN debt and you're willing to take that debt on.

why the hell did petrie give mixu 4.5 half year contract, that's what i want to know. surely giving an untried manager such a contract would go against The Tache's parsimonious nature? the only reason i can think of is we didn't get much compensation when TB moved on. anyone any ideas?

#16 I see your point mate, put it another way if an invester came in to buy the club everything is in place to move it forward, no debt makes the club an atractive aquisition in my eyes. It would be an ideal time for someone to come in, as the SPL is rank at the moment, rangers and celtic are losing there grip, a new owner could take this opportunity to do something, i hate to say it but the jambos could and should have done this as the cash was there, however there is a mad man in the nuclear sub at the wheel. What does anyone else think should we sell to the right people or keep going as we are?
18

Hobo Harry,

Personally think we should horse Mixu oot the door and steal Lazlo from Hearts. Certainly not Yogi, but we are a new coach away from being a decent team.......

19. I agree, the biggest problem with Hibs seems to be Mixu. At least we now have a keeper that doesn't gift goals like Maka and McNeil.

" steal lazlo from hearts" did you not see the hearts result today, he is really not all that much better than mixu.
but i agree a change of management is much needed, hibs should be winning around 70% of there home games, at the moment it is around 30% no way good enough.

Petrie is, on balance, good for the club - but he is going to have to stop hiring Hibs "legends" as managers. He needs to start hiring managers as managers. Actually, stealing Mark McGee would not be a bad move. Motherwell played us off the park, and in case anyone is wondering, the ref had a very good game. It WAS a penalty and Nish was falling over most of the time looking for free kicks. Funny thing #3 when Keenan came on Hibs game improved. But they still, over the piece, look like a pack of clueless numpties. Mixu tells us time and again that they practice passing movements in training and time and again they hoof the ball into the strathosphere on a Saturday afternoon. And Mixu believes all is well. How long before he tells us that if we want entertainment we should go to the movies?

21 thommo1875, Todays result aside I think Lazlo has done well. Jambos on here think they have the best squad outside the OF. I don't, I think they are poor and it reflects well on Lazlo that he has them where he has in the league.

Neutral Observer,

Actually, while appreciating that Mixu frequently appears to be clueless, Hibs are really only a couple of good players away from being able to get better results. However, today's performance was abject. Its not hard to see where the better players are needed. I mean, how bad is Mixu's favourite John Rankin? He was abismal. Cannot pass the ball, cannot tackle, no vision - in short, no idea. Players who tried hard today were the keeper, Riordan and Jones who stood between Hibs and a pasting. If he goes on Monday then the rest of the season has a bleak outlook. Ratings today:

Szamotulski 8
McCormack 6
Hogg 3
Jones 9
Hanlon 5
Chisholm 4
Thicot 2
Stevenson 3
Rosa 7
Rankin 1
Nish 1
Riordan 7
Keenan 5

you could be right, i dont think their squad is any stronger than hibs cetainly not up front, so in hind sight perhaps he is a decent enough manager for the SPL, but would he be good enough, i don't think we would ever know.

who here thinks hibs will finish in the top six??
i dont and i'm a hibby, team 2 points below us are coming good, what are we going to have to do in the run in..
kilmarnock " last 6 games" won 3 drew 3
hamilton won 5 lost 1
hibernian won 1 drew 2 lost 3

I agree - to be fair Lazlo seems an ok guy (Chr ist doesn't he go ON tho) he knows his job and is good at it but as usual Romanov won't let him do it... sorry but this is fine by me. Eventually he'll get frustrated and leave & he is great asset to Hearts at the mo.

Does anyone know why Romanov was at ER today, btw ?

Nothing happened on the pitch (which is still in dreadful shape) to alter Mixus position, or where we're at or heading - but we were set to nick a win which we didn't really deserve until Thicot did "a Gatheussi" late on.

Nicely worked & taken goal early on but the only pass marks at FT went to Rosa & Szamo, great performance from both... but this only highlights the glaringly bad deals/negotiations we did to only take them until the end of the season. Unless we can get them longer term all we've done is place great ads in the shop window... and they just bumped the price tags up.

Let's be honest, giving Mixu the job was a risk, just like Tony Mowbray was a risk and John Collins was a risk, Tony Mowbray proved to be a great manager, John Collins given more time and some of the money given to Mixu would have us much higher up the league. Instead we have Mixu who has now proved to be f#$%less. Petrie must go immediately, Mixu can catch the same bus straight out of there..... This team is going no where, like a sailing boat devoid of wind and is just bobbing along. Get somebody in who has an idea and we'll see a difference, Mixu proved yesterday he has no idea by taking Nish off and bringing Keenan on!!!, Keenan could not get a game here in Australia, surely Hibs can do better than him!!!!

MIXU MUXT GO NOW!

In football as in life, you reap what you sew. It seems highly likely that we will lose Jones, Fletcher and Shiels today and just what will that say of Hibs ambition. Should it happen and there`s no inbound replacements, Petrie may as well pull close the ground having clearly given up on this season. Okay, players come and go and this is nothing new, but how much negativity are the fans supposed to accept? Hibs desperately need new people at Management, Coaching and Board level. People with ambition and the ability to build a team from the wreckage that is Hibs right now.
50

Flynny,

Edinburgh 02/02/2009 10:44:46
Well just the usual Hibs on deadline day. Trying to sell our soul,Ive emailed Hibs demanding answers and asking them to give me 1 good reason as to why I should return?
I am just sick of this roundabout mentality,as in player plays well, punt him on,not investing in replacements, instead bringing in journeymen!
Though if Fletch ends up at Parkhead no matter what reply I get I wont be back! I promise!
