Travis **
The Picture House

IT'S 8.15pm on a Thursday night. For the past two years, the only people you'd be likely to encounter outside 31 Lothian Road at this time of the week are booze-hungry students and office workers enjoying a cigarette.
Now, the pavement outside the former Caley cinema is bustling with music fans; all gathered here to witness the official opening of Edinburgh's new major music venue – The Picture House.

And it's been worth the wait. Following its previous incar
nation(s) as a tacky nightclub and half-baked gigging spot, The Picture House looks and feels every inch a top-class music venue. From its stained-glass door windows to its ornate, golden-painted ceilings, its art-deco feel to its lavish balcony-seating areas (1500 people all in), from the friendly welcome received at the door (a rarity at major gig venues) to the excellent acoustics – it's been £4.5 million well spent.

So, who should christen this aesthetically pleasing, spanking brand new Edinburgh venue? Why, a benign, middle-of-the-road band from Glasgow, of course. Idlewild had previously performed at The Picture House's "preview show" last week so, assuming The Proclaimers were out of town or claiming too much money, it seems a bit odd why Travis – hardly renowned for their showmanship and high-energy live performances – should be bestowed such an honour. Whatever the case, the Glaswegian soft-rockers didn't disappoint.

"So, this is the new music venue, then, eh?" says singer, Fran Healy, gazing up at the new surroundings. "I guess that means we have to take our litter home with us. No spitting or peeing in the corners now, everybody."

And so it went, as Travis slouched from one mid-tempo tune to the next. Healy was his usual chirpy self, though, cajoling the audience (who needed no encouragement) into a waltz and, when he really felt rock 'n' roll, jumping off his drummer's bass drum.

Yet if anything felt genuinely uncomfortable, it was the cruel taunting of Swedish keyboard player, Claes Bjorklund. Urging the entire audience to point at poor Claes as if they were "pointing at someone you hate the most" whilst chanting his Christian name, well, the band's keyboarder must be on a hefty salary to suffer such an indignity every night.

Nevertheless, you can't deny Travis are consummate performers who give their fans exactly what they want: Driftwood, Writing To Reach You, and Why Does It Always Rain On Me? all delivered and received with equal passion on both sides of the stage.

And while there's no doubting The Picture House will quickly cement its reputation as a great place for live music, you can't help feel booking an Edinburgh act would have been a more appropriate choice. Try telling Travis fans that, though.

You'd think there were 1499 deluded people and Barry Gordon in attendance last night.
Why send a man who obviously cant stand the band to review them?
I thought they put on a very good show, not sure about the venue though to be honest. Not a patch on the Liquid Room for atmosphere.
And what Edinburgh band do you think could of opened it? Answers on the back of a stamp please.

It'd take far more than a band like Turgid to tempt me anywhere near Lothian Road, decent venue or not

I think Goodbye Mr McKenzie should have reformed for this gig - a step up from their last gig at Cameron Toll or something.

The venue is better now than it was as a nightclub, no smelly sticky carpets!. As for Travis, I think this was a good band to put in, Healy gets the crowd going with genuinely happy unlike some bands that just play their set and get off the stage ASAP. I get the feeling that Barry Gordon just didn't like Travis at all, maybe next time get someone who enjoys music to review a gig eh?! By the way how many international renowned Edinburgh bands do you know of?
20

Joe Smith.,

Moscow 26/09/2008 13:45:28

#21 - yes, that would be really something, get Sharleen Manson out of Garbage and Fatty McFatbastart from the Exploited in, and it would sell a million
21

#22 The Exploited, Boards of Canada, christ,. Josef K, the Fall, Stone Roses, World of Twist

Aphrodite's Child were formed in a flat on Westfield Road, opposite Sainsbury's "Murrayfield". Demis Roussos was originally from Chesser.

Unknowninedin,

26/09/2008 13:52:25
Since when did the Stone Roses come from Edinburgh?! I doubt they could start the Madchester movement from Edinburgh. I think I've seen the other bands often in the charts.

Johnny Yen,

unbelievably sniffy and parochial review from a great Scottish band opening a new great venue on the Scottish music scene. Didnt hear too many complaints from the audience, perhaps the reviewer needs to extract his head from his backside. The venue obviously wanted a Scottish band to open it with a sell out show, theres not that many Scottish bands with a wide appeal that could guarantee that, never mind Edinburgh bands.
25

DLD,

26/09/2008 14:00:01
Bring back Rev! lol

I dont really see the need for another medium sized music venue when the Corn exchange can be used. We need a venue like the SECC for bigger bands and more events can be held.
26

Joe Smith.,

Moscow 26/09/2008 14:00:23

#28 - maybe you need to extract your head from your collection of Kenny G, Mantovani and Travis records.
27

Joe Smith.,

Moscow 26/09/2008 14:02:58

#27 I though James Yorkston was Fife?

re: stone roses, they are from Edinburgh. ian Brown once said to Bop fanzine in 1989 "It's not where you're from, it's where you're at", well I'm from Edinburgh, so it follows.

I was kidding about Intastella and World of Twist though.

christ. is the best whiteboy electronica portobello's ever seen
28

Salvatori,

26/09/2008 14:03:02
28 - Of course the audience would love them, being Travis fans an aw, the same way an audience of Girls Aloud won't boo the ladies onstage. Doesn't mean they're not keech however.

I would've preferred a line up of:

Nat 'n Ritchie - (L'il Nat and Kenny Ritchie perform a duet of popular love songs in a reggae stylee)

Goodbye Mr McKenzie - performing that unforgettable hit and aptly entitled - Goodbye Mr McKenzie.

Hamfatter - afterall one of them lives in da Burg

Finlay Quaye - just to drive the punters out in droves at the end of the gig, so the venue staff can get home early.

29

Unknowninedin,

26/09/2008 14:05:29
Well i don't like electronic music so no I don't like BOC. No I don't like Coldplay, it's obvious that you don't like Travis so why post on a article about Travis ya numpty!

I'm just glad that we have a new venue in Edinburgh and if it takes off more, there might not be so many trips to Glasgow to see gigs.
30

Joe Smith.,

Moscow 26/09/2008 14:11:02

This arvo I am listening to "Are You Are Missing Winner" by the Fall.

Mark E Smith lived in Edinburgh for just over a year.

"Are You Are Missing Winner" is a rockabilly jam session with incomprehensible lyrics. Not great, but miles better than The Trav.

31

Joe Smith.,

Moscow 26/09/2008 14:12:49

When I'm done listening to the fall, I'm going to play Jeff Mills' concept LP about UFOs.

All music is 'electronic' in this age of pro-tools etc

Frank healy is an Anglo-Scots cyborg, who was created by an evil chimpanzee warlord who wanted to make a band that would be even more bland and commercial than Deacon Blue

Shirley Manson is from Edinburgh, so Garbage could arguably be considered an Edinburgh band, even if the rest are American.

Darn! skipped #23 - might have known you'd be "in like Flint" Joe :-)

Boy Wonder,

What's with the writer's use of "christen the place" and "christian name"??

Is this some kind of backlash against Hindus, Sikhs, Islamists, Jews, Jains or whatever??

I though the expressio "christian name" was done away with. Certainly I don't have one. I have Western first name.

This article needed some editing which was clearly not done!

#44 I saw S Manson in HMV Princes Street in about 1991 buying a copy of Curve's "Blindfold" EP.

Case of Corona goes to #34.

Q. Why do Travis make videos?
A. So deaf folks can hate them too.

Would rather watch Smoked Glass or Missing cat if they had bothered to show any Edinburgh bands.
