THOUSANDS of US marines and hundreds of Afghan troops poured into Taleban-infested villages of southern Afghanistan with armour and helicopters today in the first major operation under President Barack Obama's strategy to stabilise the country.
The offensive was launched shortly after 1am today local time in Helmand province. The goal is to clear insurgents from the hotly contested region before the nation's August 20 presidential election.

Officials described the operation, dubbed Khanjar, or Strike of the Sword, as the largest and fastest-moving of the war's new phase, involving nearly 4,000 of the newly arrived Marines and 650 Afghan forces.

Daybreak brought sporadic gunfire, but no heavy fighting immediately broke out. Medical helicopters circled overhead and landed, indicating possible early casualties among the Marines.

A roadside bomb early in the mission wounded one Marine, but he was able to continue, spokesman Captain Bill Pelletier said.

#1. When you are in serious trouble I will remember to stand back and ignore you because it is your trouble and not my trouble. You can deal with whatever fate has dealt you and take the consequences however nasty they are. I'll give a helping hand elsewhere.

"if they went into any country other than their own, citizens of any of those countries would do what it takes to rid the country of those troops"

You mean like your lot in Tibet?

Pantaloon: What the propaganda press of little britain doesnt show is what doesnt suit the. For eg. The atrocities performed by Alied troops in iraq or afgani.
The war mongering sons of ex-prime-ministers and what has happened to his band of gypsies. All rotting except for the pig himself.
FACT_ FOR WHATEVER REASON NO
And they certainly dont show the pro- China supporters in Tibet who outnumber the protesters. Because it just doesnt want you - its fools to know about it.
But as usual you Brits are happy to bound in blindly declaring yourseves the worlds moral leader.
Remember, its the british that taught most of the colonies including Zimbabwe, China, America (USA) Australia etc etc. their political systems and how they can be abused and corrupted.
Maybe read some international press sometime and not just beleive the garbage they feed you here.
One just needs to look at the rugby comments to know how the brits believe in rule for us and rules for them.
No country has the right to invade another because they and their people feel that their way is better. This country has been doing this since its existance

#5 Maurice,
Well said and very true, but it doesn't sit well with the colonial masters and their offspring the Americans.

I can handle myself and look after myself, can't you?

The trouble you talk about is brought on by your lot, and if that's fate, so be it, but that doesn't make it right.

#4 Pantaloon,
So, please tell me about Tibet, in the meantime please read this and then we'll talk again.

And remember, don't post any youtube links, they won't open for us in China, that's what they get for lying and posting garbage, we've pulled the plug on them, and good riddance to them.

If to agree with an opinion which is not yours subjects me to your insults then so be it.
However that is not going to change my opinion. Your comments suggest that you will not help your neighbour, be it in the next country, town, street or even next door. After all were would you draw the line.
You obviously have never lived under the terror and strict control these people exert, so you have no real understanding of the situation. If you had, you would not have made the comment "when the rest of the Afghanis have had enough of them they will do what it takes to get rid of the Taleban". The Taliban in Afghanistan is not solely made up of locals, but extremists from all over the world. I suggest that before you make such inflammatory comments about a subject, you should really read up on it from several different sources first.
Your comments above show a total misunderstanding of the basic situation out there.
Yours are the comments of an evil and twisted person.
Your anti imperialist, anti capitalist rants are getting a bit tiresome.
I know this post will more than likely subject me to more of your bitter comments, but I don't care. You have displayed ignorance and callousness and I have said my piece. End of.

I guess the Taleban had better move back to Iraq.
