TWO lucky pets have been reunited with their owners after dramatic rescues by firefighters in Edinburgh.
The dog and cat both became trapped on ledges, meaning firefighters had to come up with imaginative ways of reaching them. The unrelated incidents happened yesterday, less than three hours apart.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service were al
erted to the first incident at 9.50am.

They found a 15-year-old rescue dog named Gypsy had fallen down an embankment and come to rest on a ledge at Spylaw Park, Ridge Road.

Firefighters lowered themselves 20ft down to the dog and managed to pull the animal to safety.

A spokeswoman said:

"Firefighters had to use lines and a harness for crew safety.

"They managed to secure a rescue line to the dog and the dog was then lifted to safety and returned to its grateful owner."

The dog was said to be in a good condition, but a little frightened.

Little more than two-and-a half hours later, at around 12.30pm, the fire service was called out to a rescue a cat who was trapped at Rennies Isle, off Ocean Drive.

Two firefighters donned "immersion suits" and used an inflatable path to pull the cat from a ledge under a walkway at the Water of Leith.

The fire service spokeswoman said the cat's condition seemed to be fine. She added: "A local resident has taken care of the cat and it is going to be reunited with its owner later on."

The owners should be invoiced for this use of the emergency service.

This isn't news, is it. I mean, Reuters don't sell stories about pets on a 20ft high ledge.

glad both pets are ok,but the owner, especially of the cat should perhaps think twice about letting him out in such an area, cats are sometimes too curious for thier own good(owner of cat who got stuck on fence and had to be brought down via step ladder!)

#1. The same could be said for that boy who got stuck on Cramond Island.

Quite a heartwarming story after all the reports of violence that I have read here. Good to know good things do happen.

As long as the emergency services are not required elsewhere, it does provide a real life opportunity to practice their training and I am sure the owners appreciate, greatly, society's comapassion for them.

firemen have been known to feel strongly emotional about sleep, this is true.

They should send the animals to China - that's where they wrote the book "101 ways to Wok your dog"

Maybe they should put signs up to warn the animals that there's a dangerous drop?

Obviously some of you are not animal lovers. Granted the owner of the cat should keep it inside. I have never understood why cats are allowed to roam out doors these days. I have four who are inside cats--two are 16 and the others are 10 and 12. THey wouldn't be alive if allowed out. The poor dog should have been leashed . That being said, those firemen who rescued the aimals should be given a lot of praise for careing for these animals enough to rescue them. I don't think it would happen like that where I live. Agree with number 6.

Richard Head,

Shall we invoice you for use of the emergency services the next time you have to use them?
