THE devastated girlfriend of the firefighter who died while tackling a pub blaze left a moving message for him at the spot where he lost his life.
His grieving partner placed a floral tribute to Ewan Williamson yesterday outside the Balmoral Bar in Dalry.

In a message, she wrote: "Ewan, what am I going to do without you?

"My hero, did you have to be everyone else's!

"Love you forever babe, you better look out for me."

The note was simply signed 'Lynsey'.

Firefighters have now been given the go-ahead to begin investigating the blaze which claimed the life of Mr Williamson, 35, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A separate investigation involving specialist police teams is expected to begin today.

After speaking to the fireman's family, the head of Lothian and Borders fire service has also paid tribute to Mr Williamson.

Chief Fire officer Brian Allaway posted a message on the fire service's website which said:

"I can pay no better tribute than to use their words to describe the kind of man Ewan was – wonderful, kind, outgoing, a great sportsman and loved by everyone."
