PRIME Minister Gordon Brown has outlined plans for a return to competitive sport in schools, in a bid to create a new generation of Olympic champions for the London Games in 2012.
Mr Brown promised the games would be the "best Olympics ever" as the torch was passed to London at the close of the Beijing sporting extravaganza.

He praised Team GB's Olympic heroes, who had "captured the imagination of our country" and hoped they would inspire youngsters for the future.

The Prime Minister, in Beijing for the closing ceremony of the Olympics, said he wanted to end the "medals-for-all culture" and bring back the competitive element to school games.

He also called for children to be given the chance of becoming involved in a greater range of sports and even suggested the return of boxing to the school gym.

In particular, Mr Brown said he wanted to enlist the women stars of the Beijing Games, such as Rebecca Adlington, Christine Ohuruogo and Victoria Pendleton, to overcome the reluctance of many girls to take up sport.

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham will announce a "further substantial investment" in out-of-school sports this week on top the £100 million promised by Mr Brown last year in his final Budget as Chancellor.

Whatever you think of the guy, he does have a point on this occasion - real life is competitive, and children do not need to be cocooned from this.

This is Gordon Brown who refused to attend opening ceremony but now that some medals have been won is milking Team GB for all its worth as part of his Scotland is British campaign.

Time for all football fans to protest at Gordon Brown's stupid suggestion for a Team GB football team at next olympics. It will mean the end of Scotland's national side as corrupt officials in FIFA cannot be trusted.

Under his command and on his watch schools have gradually reduced physical activity, let alone anything competitive to low levels. It's taken lottery funding to make up some of this deficit and now he is bleeding that to fund the 2012 Olympics.

Like his predecessor the Olympics are only there to enable him to grin inanely as he promotes Team Gordon Brown - the biggest loser ever. Oh yes - and meanwhile the country heads towards third world standards!

#8 Dave from Barra, some schools banned competative sports because the head teachers did not want there to be winners and losers, so the kids who were not that great academically but good at sports were not allowed to shine - nonsense of course but that's our wonderful education system for you

All the headlines nowadays appear to start with "Brown wants", is this to detract people from his incompetence in eveything he does or says??
I do believe it actually enhances his obvious ineptitude of being PM!

All his actions to date are geared to consolidate and strenghten the 'Union' as he sees it, but it is all having the reverse effect, well done Brown, keep up the good work and more power to your elbow!!!

Labour were the party that were against competitive sports. Given that he has been the most senior labour politician since Smith died could he not have done this 15yrs ago.

You get the feeling that Browns comments should really be an apology to the nation for labours destruction of sport at school.

#19. That's right, Labour has done more than any other party in the UK to undermine achievement in the name of political correctness and child-centre policies. Exams are now so easy they are laughable and the results meaningless. As for sport, we used to have the Amateur Atletics Awards and inter-school and inter-area championships. Every year, each school would have a sports day. If you did well at the school sports day, you went to compete in the local inter-schools games. If you did well there, you went up to country level. If you made the grade at county level, you were looking at the UK team. Football and rugby had school leagues and there wasn't just 1 team. Being a baby-boomer, we had an A, B,C and D team - all of which got matches on a Saturday morning. Staff used to turn up to train us and organise everything.

properly organised competitive sport can only enhance achievement. nz competes very well for the size of its population, scotland rarely does and grea britain rarely does, the recent olympics being an exception.
some kids will excell others will just be participants, either way they will be healthier and likely better equipt for life generally
lets face it gordon doesnt make many sensible statements,so please dont deride him when he finally makes a good suggestion
and the politically correct brigade can go and live somewhere else preferably at the bottom of the pacific ocean
