LOTHIAN MP Jim Devine has been given the backing of his local constituency party as he battles to hold on to his job.
Around 50 members of Mr Devine's constituency party gave him their "unwavering support" at a meeting when he was grilled on his expenses claims.

The MP has denied any wrongdoing over his expenses and has even asked police to investigate his Commons expenses in a bid to clear his name.

Mr Devine faces his toughest week in politics as Labour's "star chamber" – the National Executive Committee (NEC) – is to scrutinise his expenses next week and will determine whether he is fit to stand as a Labour MP for the Livingston seat at the next election.

At the centre of the MP's questionable claims is the rewiring of his one-bedroom London flat, for which he claimed £1,257 paid in cash to a bogus company.

Explanations for Mr Devine's claim of £2,326 for joinery work, which reportedly included 66 metres of shelving, have also been contradictory. Last week the MP told the Evening News the "industrial" shelving was installed in his London flat by his local pub landlord and longtime friend, Tony Moran, who travelled to London to do the work.

The money for the shelving and other joinery work was claimed from Mr Devine's Incidental Expenses Provision (IEP) for office costs, and not from his Additional Costs Allowance for second homes, which he said was cleared by the Commons' fees office.

But Mr Moran has reportedly since said that he did not fit any shelves at the MP's flat and, according to sources at the constituency meeting, Mr Devine also told them that the shelves were not in his flat, but in the basement of a pub in Blackburn – thought to be Moran's Turf Bar.

He also allegedly told the meeting he was being evasive about the shelving because he was using them for local Labour Party campaign leaflets and boards, which he said was against House of Commons rules.

Mr Moran has since been unavailable for comment despite several attempts to contact him.

The MP also reportedly said he was willing to pay the money back for the shelves at the meeting and wants to carry out next week's NEC meeting at his London home to prove the electrical work was actually carried out.

"He has become an embarrassment," said a senior Labour source. "It's like dealing with a seven-year-old who makes up excuse after excuse.

"He put some evidence forward regarding the allegations through a letter from Mr Moran saying he did do work for him. He asked for support from the constituency and he got it, but let's see what the NEC does. They will want concrete proof of his claims. If he doesn't provide it he'll be out."

Mr Devine refused to comment on what he said at the constituency party meeting, but said that all the allegations were "outrageous". He added:

"No-one stood up and objected to what was being agreed and everyone had a say. I am innocent of all these allegations."

well what a surprise! he goes even further in the local west lothian press and 'calls in the police to investigate these allegations'.
let me get this straight, bob the builder put the shelves up in my office, no i mean my london flat, no i mean they are in the pub basement, no i mean they are in my garage. i would have thought it would be easy to spot and remember where you put 200ft of shelving? he has claimed over £2000 for this shelving being put up (somewhere) then admits that it is being used for party politicking. he wants the police to investigate and clear him of any wrong doing but offers to pay back the money claimed. send for sherlock homes!

Send for Inspector Knacker! If this DOESN'T get charged, then we will really know that there is two versions of law.

Jeez, Clouseau could see he's a crook!

I appreciate the electrical work was paid for in cash however surely Mr Devine is able to produce his bank account transactions which should show a withdrawl of that amount near to the time of payment. With regard to the shelves, surely he could take to media to where they were installed. If he has lied however, then this is clearly a case of fraud.

I'm more concerned that there are 50 members of his local party who are giving him "unwavering support".

If Devine gets bumped, then his local party needs to be purged of half-wits and sycophants at the same time.

Has First Minister Salmond released his diaries yet to prove he wasn't stealing from the taxpayer when claiming his westminster food expenses? Does he plan to? Will he resign?

Has SNP Angus Robertson resigned for buying a home cinema system with our money?

For SNP supporters it seems to be ok for their lot to commit theft but god forbid someone from another party should be at it....

I'm guessing that the local party are so braindead that they'd support Gary Glitter if he wore a Labour rosette.

Never mind. If the party won't do the necessary, I'm sure the voters will.

There once was a man named Devine,

Whose nose was in the trough, like a swine,

For shelves, wiring, in a garage or hoose?

If he thinks we're buying this, he must have a screw loose!

Devine Statement 1: Last week the MP told the Evening News the "industrial" shelving was installed in his London flat by his local pub landlord and longtime friend, Tony Moran, who travelled to London to do the work.

Devine Statement 2: But Mr Moran has reportedly since said that he did not fit any shelves at the MP's flat and, according to sources at the constituency meeting, Mr Devine also told them that the shelves were not in his flat, but in the basement of a pub in Blackburn – thought to be Moran's Turf Bar.

Both statements cannot be true. One - or possibly both - are therefore incorrect. And yet 50 local Labour party members find no contradiction in these 2 statements ? We can easily work out what Devine is... but for 50 people to swallow this and prop him up. Well thats very worrying indeed. If Devine is bumped, which red suited monkey will be endorsed by "the feeble 50" ? (2009 version)

having stayed in west lothian for most of my life, and always voted labour, i will not do so again, as long as this guy is involved with the party. he must resign and be investigated for what he has done. if joe public did what he has (ment) to have done, we would have already been in court.

Was the meeting held in West Lothian or London? The man is capable of anything -and a bit more!

#16 - Labour depend on their 'core support' being prepared to vote for a badly-shaved ape or a sack of keech. In Devine's case, it's hard to tell the difference. That apology for a politician isn't fit to lick Robin Cook's wellies.

wee weegie,

this is the guy who is also being taken to a tribunal by his former staff. he has had 2 local councillors resign from working for him, 1 within a day. that cllr has sent him an email calling him bizarre.
if this guy can't remeber where he put the shelving, can we 'trust' him to take any decisions for his constituents. the local clp are as cupable as devine, or is this just a stalling tactic till the "publicity" dies down.

devine must feel like all those football managers that get the resounding backing of the team board, only to be sacked soon after

I was there and Jim Devine never got unwavering support. He got the backing as the CLP were not there to judge him. The CLP took him at his word but I along with others fully expect him to be deselected and kick out the party and probably to jail. He is a compulsive liar. He tried to stop the minutes of the meeting being sent out to members

These stories are getting tedious!

Where do these people get off thinking it absolves them if they just pay the money back?

Would we expect to let off a bank robber if he gives the money back when caught?
Greed has lead to them being caught and it would be stupidity on our part if they get away with it.

if there is one thing guarenteed to lose a public figure support? it's contempt! and my goodness labour have it in abundance! well it's their decision! the interesting thing is? they've convinced themselves the euro election results are as low as they can go? keeping brown & his crooks will result in the labour coming third in the next general election! bye bye labour. as far as devine goes? he can always get a job in his local pub collecting glasses!

Come the general elction, if this crook is still standing , the the voters should be reminded of the invoice from a bogus non existant company and the shelving that doesnt exist!

Whether Devine gets the support of his cronies or not, does not matter one jot. The electorate will decide for themselves.

As well as support from the 'party faithful' I am surprised that George Foulkes isn't getting his oar in about what a nice chappie this Mr Devine is. George is good at defending the indefensible, but maybe this one is just a step too far.

Heard rumours that George is away exploring the darker reaches of the upper Nile.

why not just say "A big bad boy took all my shelves away, honest"
this is what we get from labour ,hes not the first or last MP/councilor whos been booted for being crooked
just own up ,and maybe just maybe people might just respect your honesty, but vote for you?,another story, but a word comes to mind ,formed from vote-VETO
