HEARTS - Aguiar 61, Karipidis 80
PRICELESS opportunism saw Hearts prise three points from Ayrshire following second-half goals from Bruno Aguiar and Christos Karipidis.

Despite swirling wind and rain, the visitors prevailed by converting twice in the second half and leaving Kilmarnock to curse their own profligacy.

Jim Jefferies' side dominated the first 45 minutes and created several openings but were forced into submission after the interval. Aguiar completed the most flowing move of the game with a vicious strike from distance before Karipidis headed the second ten minutes from full-time.

It was a much improved second-half display from Hearts, which also owed much to some dogged defending by Christophe Berra and his colleagues. Following last week's Scottish Cup elimination of Hibs, the Edinburgh club appear to have perfected the art of timely goalscoring in alignment with assured defending.

Csaba Laszlo, the Hearts manager, conducted five changes for this fixture, although three were enforced. Marius Zaliukas and Lee Wallace were precluded by suspension, while goalkeeper Janos Balogh was left cursing a training injury and was replaced by Jamie MacDonald. Aguiar's return was to prove pivotal. Jefferies went with three alterations in the hope of supplementing the victory he enjoyed when the teams last met at Tynecastle.

After a lively if somewhat untidy start, the hosts began to utilise a useful attacking outlet in Danny Invincibile. He was confronted by Hearts' Jason Thomson, playing out of position at left-back, and twice scampered clear of the defender during the early exchanges without delivering a telling final ball.

There was consternation in the Hearts technical area on 26 minutes when Michael Stewart came off worst in a 50-50 challenge with Kilmarnock's Frazer Wright. The centre-back appeared to win the ball when sliding in with his opponent just outside the centre circle, but he also caught Stewart in the knee. The Scotland internationalist recovered after extensive treatment.

The visitors survived concerted pressure on the half-hour mark when only a series of blocks inside the penalty area prevented Kilmarnock moving ahead following a corner. Berra then caught Allan Russell with a decisive tackle as he sped off towards goal, and seconds later David Fernandez spurned a precious opening with a wayward shot from 18 yards with only MacDonald between the Spaniard and goal. It was Russell, however, who stood accused of the most blatant profligacy on 38 minutes.

From Garry Hay's clipped cross, the forward evaded all markers and looked certain to score at the back post but succeeded only in nodding the ball wide of goal much to MacDonald's relief. Half-time arrived with most inside Rugby Park perplexed as to why this game remained goalless.

If Hearts were to prise anything out of the teeming Ayrshire rain, their second half performance would require more invention and force. Kilmarnock showed enough movement and craft to suggest that they would remain difficult to suppress despite deteriorating conditions, which hardly lent themselves to conducive football.

The game resumed with further home dominance but just after the hour mark Hearts effected a beautiful flowing move complemented by a sumptuous finish from Aguiar. A precise exchange of seven passes between Aguiar, who started the move, Andy Driver and Michael Stewart ended with the Portuguese thumping a ferocious drive beyond Alan Combe from 20 yards. That it was Hearts' first shot on target only underlined Kilmarnock's previous superiority, but the smash-and-brag nature of the goal was unlikely to bother Laszlo.

Russell should have converted Hay's cross at the back post moments later and, facing a resolute defence, Kilmarnock's task in seeking an equaliser became evermore unenviable as the match progressed. Mehdi Taouil had a free-kick comfortably collected by MacDonald before Karipidis secured victory for his side. Stewart's deep free-kick was redirected towards the six-yard box by Berra and, with the home defence inexplicably static, the Greek headed home from close range with consummate ease.

MacDonald showed impressive reactions to deny substitute Willie Gibson and Combe saved a Christian Nade shot with his legs as the afternoon drew to a close. Shouts of "ole" from the visiting support masked their side's deficiencies earlier in the day, but the saying that goals change games has rarely been more applicable for Hearts, who finished the game in command.

Kilmarnock: (4-4-2): Combe; Fowler, Ford, Wright, Hay; Invincibile, Bryson, Pascali, Taouil; Russell, Fernandez. Subs: Rascle, Murray, Gibson 74 (for Invincibile), Skelton, Flannigan, Nolan, Simmonds 72 (for Russell).

Hearts (4-4-1-1): MacDonald; Neilson, Jonsson, Berra, Thomson; Obua, Stewart, Karipidis, Driver; Aguiar; Nade. Subs: Kello, Mrowiec, Cesnauskis 73 (for Driver), Templeton, Rapnik, Glen 79 (for Aguiar), Brown.

Referee: Charlie Richmond.

Attendance: 5469.

Great win in what sounded like awful conditions for football again.

Since when did the bbc gaelic channel start showing spl games on a sat night?

Rico,

BBC Alba been showing games for a while.

A small section of Hearts fans let us down today with with their choice of songs. These people need to have a word with themselves. They are are not welcome at the games.

#2 And they can leave their Union Flags at home too. We are NOT Rangers in disguise and need to root out who think we are.

Anyway, result was better than the performance and more than happy to pick up the 3 points to put a wee bit of pressure on the Dons and Arabs for tomorrow's games. Good performance by Jamie in goal.

#3 - spot on mate. Its normally silly wee laddies with their flags.

Delighted with result considering it was a poor performance (based on my mates comments). Will watch the game at 8pm on Alba.

They were singing the sash...

WE ARE WE ARE WE ARE THE HEARTS,

17/01/2009 17:58:24
I hear there was a bit of bother among the hearts support today. Linked to these sash/union jack incidents I take it??
8

FINLAYBAR,

17/01/2009 17:59:04
The people that were singing that song should not be made welcome at tynie in my eyes.

Hearts have a social responsibility to cut this out completely.

Rico,

#7 - yeah...thats why the bother started.

In recent weeks, I have listened to a considerable number of my fellow Hearts fans mock a brave Hibs player's disability, sing a disgusting homophobic song on Micky Weir's return to Tynecastle, and now sing the same sectarian songs which they ironically boo when Rangers supporters sing them.

Other sides' supporters may or may not be worse but that has little relevance. The club has clearly set out the expected standards but the only way to get change is for the rest of us to let the morons know that they are damaging the club's proud history and that we will not take it any more.

All Laugh Son,

Wasn't at the game today. Sounds like we did the job against a side who have spiralled out of form since their decent start to the season.

On our fans singing the sash, I've been going to the majority of games over 30 years and never heard our fans singing it once. Strange stuff.
15

BazJT,

17/01/2009 19:01:25
#15 Neither have I strangely enough. But I don't go to many away games.

I did sit next to two idiots 4 seasons ago who were the nicest guys you could meet until Celtic or Hibs came to visit. They had their season tickets taken away from them. At least Hearts deal with their problem !
16

HotPiesMcBovril,

17/01/2009 19:02:56
I'm a Hearts fan. Hearts fans sung this week in week out in the late 70's early 80's home and away and always when playing against Hibs or Celtic.
17

BazJT,

17/01/2009 19:05:06
#17 Aye ok but we're talking the 21st century. What's the 70's and 80's got to do with anything ?
18

BazJT,

17/01/2009 19:09:08
Interesting to hear from anyone that went to the game today as this report doesn't tie up with what I heard on the radio.

From this report you would think we'd weathered a storm and stole the points at the end. From what I took from the radio it was a very even first half, Killie could have scored from a header and gone in 1-0. Hearts scored and then created a few chances and played some reasonable stuff.

Given we were playing away from home against a decent team perhaps Barry Anderson could take his green tinted glasses off and write a reasonable report.

A fine win and another clean sheet, the cushion of a 2 goal lead aswell very familiar score to last week in the Scottish Cup. 5 changes to the side and a young average age took to the field. Bruno comes up trumps again and Karipidis getter stronger and better in his role. All good signs of a strong finish to the season hopefuly and we seem focused
20

BazJT,

17/01/2009 19:15:29
It would also appear from the radio commentary that two of Hearts three yellow cards were harsh but no more than you'd expect from Charlie Richmond.

A good 3 points away from home.

Hi Guys. I was at the game and very near to the sash singers. The guys who started it all had a very pronounced west coast accents.

I don't think it was regular Jambo supporters. Unfortunately any complaints to the stewards were blanked.

The we-gie press will still give us a bad name however.
22

what a chancer,

waiting in the wings 17/01/2009 19:26:53
this sqaud was a not bad shout, shame obua and nade made it ,sounds like obua has taken notice and made an effort but the nade start looks like a shop window front,i thought stewart getting a start was a shock though as rapnic on the bench waiting for a chance, bruno was a length ahead again in class in midfield, this is a chance to hold the midfield strength if we can give bruno a salary and pension fund that is well used and highlighted in the capitalist circles.
23

Tam Flogel,

17/01/2009 19:40:32
Perhaps the esteemed journalist, man-of-letters and Pulitzer-shortlisted Mr Anderson can explain to us what "conducive football" means. Pathetic journalism as usual from a pathetic excuse for a writer.
24

what a chancer,

seen it aw 17/01/2009 19:45:25
it seems to be a youth thing,we used to sing it when we were young at the celts, and i even had catholic relations ,silly and ill advised glad i seen the light and left the nutters alone and so will others it usually is one or two and the rest join in for the banter best leave them alone and hopefullky they will see their errors.
25

droggs,

17/01/2009 19:59:04
Agree Topgun but it is the we-gie press who will make out it is a Scottish problem not just a bigot brothers problem.

The press only join the PC brigade when it suits their sales.

That is why we have the Daily Ranger and the Suntic.

No.22 Dross.

You're right, they had west coast accents and all hearts supporters must come from gorgie. They were definately rangers fans who fancied travelling all the way to Kilmarnock to support hearts for the day and see how many fans would join in. Sounds like there were several.

As a killie fan was really surprised to see so many Hearts fans with Union Jacks, especially the ones with the Red Hand on them. What's it all about? Can expect this bile from the Old Firm but Hearts? Why would anyone go to a Hearts v Kilmarnock game to wave a Union Jack at the Killie supporters if they were not Hearts supporters. Its all a bit strange and sad!
37

All Laugh Son,

HotPiesMcBovril is talking absolute keech. Was at nearly every game during that period - talking missing 2 games max per season - and the sash was never sung by Hearts fans. Numerous other sectarian ditties but never the sash.

Thanks to everyone who mentioned BBC Alba, as a result I was able to watch the game and to see just how badly B Anderson reported it. The report in the Scotsman is even worse. Were these guys at the game or did they just phone Jim Jeffries for his comments.

How about JJs comments after the game, to come away with the likes of they are the worst team to visit Rugby Park this season is typical of JJ, what about his mob when they visited Tyneie early in the season they we nasty and kicked us all over the place, anybody think that the Hibees were nasty last week as well.

Who cares what the likes of Jeffries or Combe think. main thing is we got the points and can move on to next weeks game. put simply its a bad case of sour grapes. Jeffries would kill for a move back to tynie so it just shows him up all the more. Well done to the boys for grinding out the win. It may well go a long way come the end o the season. Pleased for big Karapidis gettin a goal the guy has been superb for us this season and i hope his family want to stay in edinburgh beyond the season. Aguiar is in disscussion over new 2 year deal and hopes to have tied up by next week.

#43 hiya guffbag, i watched the hobos v st midden game on sultana tv today, i couldn`t help noticing the mini-tims waving irish tricolours at the game, as long as we have mini-tims we`ll have mini orcs i`m afraid thats human nature but i`m not so sure you`ll know anything about that.

3 points, yes. Performance woeful. Better to be lucky than good it would seem.

WE ARE THE GORGIE BOYS,

Hearts are a Protestant club as Hibs are a Catholic club. They've got irish tricolours so what is the problem with our union flags. maybe the Ulster flags was too far but we've got a proud protestant history so I dont see the problem you people have got.
49

wjambo,

21/01/2009 22:07:17
I can assure you the sash singing, union jack waving lowlife are not from west,as at hamilton last time they got involved and same treatment eked out in front of us. Some come from dunedin and one is well known in gorgie pubs and circles. They're known to security at other grounds and at home ground. there's no place for any of that at hearts . and as for bieng so called protestant team ,that does not nean zilch as no one knows who sitting next to as that kind of thing only happens in the west. This lot come from the capital. It was disgusting, degrading to young fans round about that had to move away and shameful to the club.
